    A lot of the hotel J1772 plugs were installed back when the only vehicles that could charge off of them were Leafs (Leaves?) and other cars that couldn't take 40+ amps. However, most of the Tesla destination chargers at the same locations can take the full 48A. I keep a Teslatap in my vehicle for this reason. A side benefit is that every Tesla driver has a J1772 adapter, but very few J1772 cars have tesla adapters, so by using the Tesla destination charger I am keeping more chargers available for more vehicles.

      That would be great, but $.80 won't buy you very many kwh of electricity. If you just paid $.10/kwh that would be 8 kwh if you could achieve
      3 miles/kwh that would be 24 mpg
      2 miles/kwh that would be 16 mpg
      As your kwh costs increase your mpg
      decreases.
      I don't believe you can purchase a kwh of electricity anywhere in the US for $.10/kwh.
      The lightning will average not towing:
      2 miles/kwh on 70 mph roads.
      2.4 miles/kwh on 55 mph roads.
      3.4 miles/kwh max in city only.
      In order to get just 40 mpg for $.80
      You'd have to get 5 miles/kwh, which isn't possible with the F150 lightning.
      And that would be at $.10/kwh.

    How does the charger know what the max charging rate would be on a circuit? Does it monitor voltage drop if you are pulling more amperage than the hardwiring could handle such as if someone were to plug into a 50A outlet that was wired with #12 feeder wiring?

    • @jeffforbes70
      @jeffforbes70 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you have a 50 amp outlet that is feed with number 12 awg . please call a real electrician, but simple answer no.i am sure they monitor voltage but residential voltage very widely.a residential home might have 245 v .but a commercial 3 phase service will only have 208v between a and b phase. so the residential could drop all the way down to 200v and the charger will see it just like the commercial 208v, again short answer no

      Dude The main question i had was how does the charger know what the kw or amperage of the charge would be. Andre showed that he was using 50A to 30A adapters at a campground. I was putting it in terms of what could be pulled vs what is actually available. Such as how does the charger know that you are on a 30A 120v circuit vs a 20 or 15 A ckt since you can use adapters to plug into either 15 or 20a receptacles from a 30A factory wired cord, or Adapt a 50A to a 120v 15 a. You sound like a smart guy, maybe you heard of those. Or maybe you cant grasp that question

    • @jeffforbes70
      @jeffforbes70 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kol3994 that wasn't your original question .if you use a adaptor from 30 to 50 amp it would not know. if it draws 45 amp it will trip the breaker. they may be able to adjust the charging rate on screen in the lightning. it can sense the voltage difference between 120 or 240. but there is no way it could sense that you adapted to a lower amperage supply.
      the question you should ask can the charge rate be lowered at the truck to acomodate the 30 amp adaptor. level 2 charge rate is 80 amps they where charging at level on the is 120v at 12 amps so 30amp receptical will charge just fine./

    My Lightning story is the worst. My truck was built on 5/10, shipped 6/2, delivered to railyard on 6/9. From there is where it went bad. It sat there a week and then the dealer found out it was put on hold for a QC issue and was accidentally mis sent. So on 6/18 it was trucked back to Dearborn to get QC issues taken care of. I received a built email on 6/25 and a shipped email on 6/27. It is now 7/9 and I still have no truck. I linked up with the regional manager in the area, and he did some digging to find out that my truck has not even shipped yet. He said that it is supposed to ship this weekend. Why does Ford send me a shipped email 2 weeks ago when it never actually shipped. Tracker now says I should get my truck 7/21-27. The whole time the visibility report has never been updated since the first delivery on 6/9.

    Not until today did I fire up ABRP and just messed around pretending that I was going to drive a Ford Lightning across the country and compare it to my EV6 58 kWh standard range. I gotta say, and don’t take my word for it check it out for yourselves, but that Lightning, unladen and no trailer is slow as heck vs the quicker charging cars. I compared i4 and EV6 and those were like 4-5 hours of charging to go from Ohio to Arizona whereas the Lightning was more like 8-9 hrs.
    It’s almost like range, efficiency and charging speed matter for EVs and this new batch of trucks was maybe not all that well thought out for doing things people sometimes do, like hit the road and drive a couple/three states away. 🤷🏼‍♂️
    Again go try this experiment yourself. I know from experience ABRP is pretty accurate with my EV6 so I’m going to assume it’s pretty close for the Ford as well.

    ATM all EVs have serious shortcomings, technology is moving forward slowly, most people hope engineers will solve problems with range, overheating, capacity, affordability, and usability to name a few, shorter charging times, battery degradation, recycling, sourcing raw materials, cold weather, etc, will continue to be a problem for years if not decades to come.
    I enjoy the show and I am a big fun of TFL & SoC, I have the means to buy an expensive vehicle but that is not the case for most people, Elon Musk is not Henry Ford, there are over a million Model T’s still on the road, Model 3 (phonetically similar) in concept the people’s car, will never be, starting at $46,999 before taxes and fees, and probably more by the time the car is delivered, is beyond the means of half of the US population and most of the world, and then there is greed, car dealers markups, add another dimension to affordability and ownership, with auto loans approaching 10 years, current EVs will be obsolete by the time the loan is paid in full, 3 years lease with no buyout option will probably be the only viable option, which doesn’t benefit consumers who otherwise would like own there vehicle.
    I am glad that TFL and SoC are reporting on real world tests, Thank you 🙏

    Energy density is everything! Diesel currently has the highest energy density, only 50% efficient. EV is 37% Efficient not including the Vampire drain.. If I park my Truck E350 Super Duty 7.3 diesel for 1 month with a full tank after a month I still have a full Tank. If you do not drive your EV truck, not plugged in but full charge, what will happen to the state of charge after a week? Month?

      Vampire drain is a non-issue in modern EVs. As long as you aren't pinging the car waking it out of sleep you will maybe lose a percent a week in my experience. Also, most people don't leave their car undriven for a month. Additionally if you have access to an electric outlet just leave the EV plugged in and there is no issue, which 2/3rds of Americans will easily have access to.

Even my Van with its two AGM’s will still lose voltage overtime and that is a 20 year old computer system running that power train. Especially in Winter, however they only have to start my 7.3. An EV the batteries are everything. Really the tech is not up to it, should have worked on a stepping stone the 5th generation of HYBRID running a 3 cylinder diesel running at 1800 rpm generating AC voltage hooked up o Tesla AC drive based system which is more efficient at Hyway speeds, then fully electric in town under 45 mph for a 50mph range, but the diesel will run to extend the range or run A/C or heat etc. 28 hp you say yup but 115lbs of torque, running a Tesla Pancake type Generator. Again can plug-in but does not have to. That system will run on 1/2 gal/hr. Waiting for the holy grail of room temperature superconducting, which will change everything.

      I haven't experienced any vampire drain. A few weeks and still showing as I left it.... unplugged. That misconception most likely originated from Tesla software background apps, features that can usually be turned off
      Your 37% is far from reality without any data, the consumer costs from the grid show such. Most will experience a $20-$30 monthly electric bill increase over 1,000 miles monthly on a mid sized EV. Gas and Diesel are over 3x that figure.

      I'm not interested in towing. The majority of trucks I see are running solo, solo occupancy and solo without a trailer. But hey, if I can tow a boat to the coast or nearby lake then I'm sold. I was never a RV road tripper anyway, isn't my kind of camping.
      As for solo road tripping, without towing, 300+ miles is complete overkill out here in the PNW. I wouldn't be surprised to see 350 miles on the lightning out here in rural WA, though our back roads are primarily 40-50 MPH, we rarely see highway speed.

I tow several times a month or haul. Most of the time I am not. The thing about a pickup is that it needs to be able to tow haul at least 100 miles without being dead empty and requiring a 45 minute charging time. If towing 42 miles to a lake, you still have to make it back as there won't be any charging there. 84 mile round trip, in summer, is pushing it. The sad part of all this electronic crap is the age of skill and the connection between man and machine is vanishing. Now people who have no skill on tracks and trails are everywhere . Its like training hard in a gym for years pushing your body to its limits putting in the sweat and blood to get stronger and then some kid who knows nothing about training and his body starts juiceing his brains out for 3 months and now he is an expert. Its just not the same its soulless and hollow and the journey is empty. And wait, in a few years the beautiful trails that people who only dare go off roading for decades because they learned a skill and the trucks had limits that it took skill and courage to off road,now so many people who would never go into the trails they will go because there truck can do the trail even if there texting going through the whole trail. The traffic is going to explode and the trails will need traffic lights and road crews to maintain the terrain. Sad synthetic world , I still enjoy running my dogs through the mt trails,or watching bronco clubs bring there horses through my land for a weekend on the mt trails. Theres a lost skill,wonder how the old cowboyboys felt 100 years ago.
