As an Icelander, born and raised at 66°N, I have always seen winter as something to be endured to survive. We use any slight excuse to brighten your days (Jól - spelled Yule in English, Þorri - unknown in English etc.). During my career as a domestic airline pilot I learned that what I had always taken for granted (Icelandic nature) was something that foreign visitors found awesome. There is an Old Norse saying: "Glöggt er gests augað" - literally, word-by-word: Discerning is the guest's eye! I learned to appreciate what my country has to offer by watching how tourists experienced it. After a bumpy 90-minute flight to spend 15-20 minutes closely circling a gushing volcano (the Holuhraun eruption north of Vatnajökull), I watched green-faced tourists carrying their full barf-bags from the aircraft WITH A HAPPY GRIN ON THEIR FACE! By that time I realized they were experiencing something I was too jaded to appreciate. It really made me re-evaluate my entire existence. For you California types: There is no bad weather, only inappropriate clothing! Regarding driving here in winter: The only scenes shown in this video were "low-blowing-snow" which is absolutely no problem. When encountering genuine "blowing snow", where you cannot see anything at all, you have to stop and wait until you glimpse a few meters of the road's edge, only to inch forward a few feet before you have to stop again and wait for the next few-feet-more-lull. That kind of driving calls for PATIENCE - not to mention the wisdom to have plenty of fuel in the tank to stay warm in case you get stuck for hours, even days, and to have a cold-weather suit AND a winter-category sleeping bag for every person aboard in case of an emergency. We are speaking plain survival...
How realistic do you think it is to hitchhike in the winter in Iceland? I have the appropriate gear for survival and camping at the temperatures, but could I get around?
@@kaya-sem I would not recommend it unless you are a hardy type and know how to suvive in a blizzard in a worst case scenario. One downside is the fact that car traffic is minimal in winter, one upsude being that few drivers are likely to leave a lone hiker on his/her own.
Iceland where is can go from 12-14 down to minus in a second, Having lived in Iceland for a year and a half my go to, thermals, snowsuit and insulated boots. (hand warmer packs are nice too) The weather can change fast, I worked at the old base at Keflavik, one time the wind was blowing so hard I saw a twin prop plane look like it was stopped in flight trying to land and his engines were at full throttle. Ohh Mads has a video up..
Haha, I loved all the comedic bits in this video! This gave me a great laugh this morning! Having a little bit of comedy in the vlogs at times definitely gives them a little spice! Iceland looks quite incredible in the winter despite how tricky it can be at times!
Fantastic video. So wanting to Iceland again. I have just disturb my 3 and half year old who is trying to sleep with my laughter from this video. Stay Safe and PUKIN BUCKETS....
New word of the day....'Fawk"...think i will be using that a lot over the coming weeks/months. Good to see you injecting a bit of comedy into the episode Greg as anything that provides some escapism even for a short time, is a good thing in my book 👍
Winter with alot of snow and storms!!! Doesn’t get any better Back in the 80’s i lived in the west fjords and during winter it wasn’t unusual to dig people out of their houses as it snowed so much- good times :)
You got there just in time lol. I will only be able to do official tours etc so no driving but what if you were on the road and then it became closed? Are you covered then if you can prove you were there first? I can't decide when to go as most things can't be done in winter but would like to see northern lights.
@Ankush paul No you're probably thinking of Svalbard which is a lot further north in the pole. They have a darkness period, which is referred to as the polar night, but it's only around 2 and a half months of darkness.
Hey everyone I hope you are having a great day, I just wanted to remind you that Jesus loves you and is willing to accept you into His Glorious Kingdom, all you have to do is accept Him in your heart and soul. GOD BLESS😇❤️
lol "PUKIN BUCKETS" great episode dude, really enjoyed it and great to be part of it :)
You're my Hero DOD. Looking forward to the inaugural guest appearance on your channel. Gotta prep my Irish accent.
Greg Snell can’t wait for it dude.
Diarmuid O'Donovan dude i laughed so hard then Darren comes on with “ No shit Sherlock” 🤣🤣🤣
Every time my grandchild refuses to sleep, I open this channel's video again and it's so cute to watch him sleep 😍😍🥰

@@10wk1srt I heard it's the place where for 6 months the sun never sets and for another 6 it never rises, is that true?
