- Ribbon mic vs Condenser Mic I Royer 121 vs Neumann U87
Have ever use a ribbon mic for recording vocals, guitars and more?
Here is Neumann U87 which is a multi-pattern condenser mic. I already made several comparison videos with this one. And this is Royer R121 which is a ribbon mic.
This is a comparison with a large-diaphragm condenser mic, Neumann U87 and a small-diaphragm condenser mic, Beyerdynamic MC930.

The opening made me so nervous. I was scared you would drop it.
Yeah shaking the ribbon make around like that can be tricky! Just the wind moving across the element alone or the momentum affect could stretch the ribbon. But Royal does use a 2.5 µm ribbon which is pretty durable, sacrifices some of the delicacy of a lighter say 1.8 µm ribbon but people want to put them right on top of speakers in such these days, so it goes.
U87 on vocals, R121 on palm-muted guitar, MC930 on lead guitar part
The ribbon in the R-121 is not centered, it is slightly shifted towards the front of the mic, which results in a slightly thinner or "top heavy" frequency response. One common trick with these is to turn them around and point the back at the acoustic guitar, and it will instantly sound brighter and more balanced than if you point the front of the mic at the guitar.
Ribbon mics give a “shape” to the sound that condenser mics and dynamic mics rarely do. Probably due to the figure of a pattern and especially the free hanging nature of the ribbon as compared to elements that have backing surfaces nearby.
to my ears: ribbon > dynamic > condenser
The ribbon mic definitely has more of a muted sound. Reminds me of dialogue from a 1950s/60s film.
well i mean they were made in the early 30's, so they probably got popular around that time
@@jackkurosaki2994 They were invented at that time, and probably were used on some films (more of a radio and music-recording tool, though), but a lot of that "muted" or "warm" tonality came from recording to tape, more than anything. Explains why movies made in the 70s-early 90s still and that sound and movies made now don't, while often using the exact same boom microphone (Sennheiser 416). The 416 sounds rather crisp, and on certain voices even sibilant, when used with digital recorders.
Did you use the front or back of the Royer R-121?
I'm assuming that you've dropped a microphone before.
Just some info or maybe just a reminder for some. IF YOU WANT TO RUN A CONDENSER AND A RIBBON MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SINGLE CHANNEL PHANTOM POWER ON YOUR PRE. YOU WILL FRY A RIBBON WITH PHANTOM POWER.
Actually for the most part this is just a myth. Modern ribbon mics in general can handle phantom power just fine. If you happen to have a really old mic, especially if it has or used to have other type of connection than xlr, then you should be concerned about sending phantom power to it. Otherwise chances are you're fine and don't need to worry about it.
That being said, I've heard this myth so many times that I don't feel comfortable sending phantom power to ribbons unless I have to, but the same goes with dynamic mics as well. Nevertheless, scientifically speaking it should be more than likely that both types of mics are ok with phantom power.
Here's a good demonstration:

EDIT: oh, and ribbon mic is technically a sub-class of dynamic mics, even though it's commonly seen as its own class. I believe they are electronically quite the same as any other dynamic mics, which may make it easier to understand how they handle phantom power.
@@JiihaaS The sE Electronics VR2 Voodoo ribbon mic actually requires phantom power. So yea, you have to know about each individual mic you are using.
Very tricky doing any kind of side-by-side of a condenser with any ribbon, or almost any ribbon, because the human ear will adjust itself to excessive high frequencies so a more muted sounding mic will sound exaggeratedly muted for perhaps one whole minute. That’s usually the recovery time after hearing a blast of feedback or just listening to over bright music, try going from Bright music to more flat frequency response music and you’ll notice that after onefull minute or so the latter begins to sound completely normal.
Really great demo man, enjoyed your tips about a two mic combo when tracking vocals!
Thanks so much for putting this together! Thanks for all the work that you put into this. Loved the comparison and knowledge drop. God bless Man
Brother , thank u for keeping your lesson short ,sweet , and fact driven.
My whole home recording journey has been tainted.
So many opinionated videos out there. Great job
I've only seen this video of yours and can have subscribed. I can feel you're a good person with a bright mind. keep it coming!
입문형 리본마이크 사용한 이후로 관심이 쏠린 제품이 r121인데, 영상 정말 잘 봤습니다. 구매에 참고 많이 됐어요. 감사합니다.
With regards to condenser mics IMHO nothing will ever top the U-67. The Royer is unsurpassed for vocals. In fact the new crop of ribbon mics are adding a nice alternative to the condenser mic.
WOW, Royer has a very wide dynamic range!
Man I wish I had 5 grand for these lol 💸
You are so cute ❤️
Thanks for the comparison video! Can you tell me what guitar you are playing? That sounds great.
The ribbon mice sounds like if you eq’ued what was recorded on a condenser mic with warmth and bass
R121 Went you in her warm arms and cuddle you.
i like the ribbon mic it sounds so real natural its just as good as the condenser mic
No
FINALLY someone who pronounces Neumann correctly
which controller is that > Avid?
Funny I found the ribbon mic smoother when you sang softly, but the Neumann clearer when singing loudly
Same here
Daniel reminds me of Phil Collins
PLEASE NORMALIZE YOUR AUDIO
Where have you gone.?
I really enjoyed this video! Please make more and may God bless you and your family and TH-cam Channel!
U87 kills it.
Great Video! Very helpful and I like the idea of mixing the two mics. Keep it up
The ribbon has sooo much compression.
Awesome comparison 👍 thank you so much Sir 😊 keep up the good work
Cool comparison video and you've got a nice voice too. Talented!
do you have a free mic?
Was it The Ramones you played on guitar?
Someone please comment on the lyrics
Its a Christian song.
"You can not get this natural, smooth and fat sound from any other mics" -> Yes, instead, you have a mic that work correctly, not muddying all the record, with detailled top (and low) end and airs, with good percussiv and good transient. Ribbon are simply bad, the record is flat, lifeless. Ok, it's hot, but just cut the high and the bottom of any mic with an EQ, place a piece of clothe in front of your mic, and you will get the same linear sound. The truth is ribbon mic are just over hypped mic.
@Harley he does absolutely, I am a bi polar nut job I reckon
Funny 😅 Clearly you haven’t used a good ribbon mic!
