Is it ok to use a dynamic mic like this Shure SM58 for recording vocals?
Everybody use SM58 at anywhere. But this workhorse can be the one for recording vocals instead of a condenser mic like U87.
This time, I’m going to compare a dynamic mic, this SM58 to a condenser mic U87.

The SM58 was originally designed as a studio mic, but when it did not sell that well, they relegated it to live use and sold like pancakes.

Very nice comparison. The SM58 is a true workhorse. I do believe, however that both mics would become defective if I were to sing through them. That would be my excuse.

Bravo! There is so much hype on condensor mics that leads to confusion. I thought I did all my research and studies etc and kept buying condensors because Dyamics were labeled as good for live performances.
However, you have to factor in where you are recording, why you are recording, and how good a vocalist you are. In fact, this is more key than anything else. Yet it gets less attention in reviews.
In my case, in an untreated sound room like my bedroom and with an amateur voice and intention of striving to improve with practice really meant a Dynamic mic is the way to go.
I need a mic for a bit of spoken word and some singing. I just wanted to sound decent on home recorded demos etc.
A condensor turned out too be too sensitive and overpriced for this. Its like deciding to drive a super car without enough experience. Of course one will end up driving badly.
Not enough mic reviews talk about this. Untreated room means do not use a condensor. Especially in the home environment.

No way can a youtube video ever give a chance for the U87 to excel and the guy's vocals will sound much the same with almost any half decent mike. The SM58 is indeed a 'half decent' mic and it shows when given half a chance.

@@MrFree-vj8qj The SM58 is a 52 year old ABORTION of a decent mike that's so 'low tech' that Shure now make kit in Mexico. There's simply so much better for far less. It's acceptable (but not great) for live sound use but has NO PLACE in video production.

Plenty of professional recording artists record vocals using dynamic mics but generally dynamic mics are favored and really only mic used for live applications. You're exactly right, its not that a dynamic microphone will not work for studio recording

I really appreciate this comparison Daniel! I've been thinking about buying a LDC mic since I'm about to start recording vocals, but realized I should just use my SM58 since my small bedroom has bad acoustics. Plus, more time focusing on performance than a little bit extra high-end tone. Your video makes me feel better about my decision. A LDC (I'm eyeing a Mojave 201fet), can come later.
Glad to discover your channel, hope you start making videos again, even if occasionally. Cheers!

I use an SM58 for recording my vocals because it doesn’t feel or sound natural if I’m not moving around and changing positions. I do “metal/harsh vocals/screaming”, so depending on what I’m doing I may want to stand, hunch over, or w.e. If I stand still facing one direction the entire time I cant get into it. My buddy who does cleans is the opposite and uses his own mic as well (sorry, I don’t remember what kind).

i've found that dynamic mics are very useful to home recording. They have a very low background noise and if you set the gain properly you can sing almost with your lips on the grid and it will compress the signal itself...Did anyone noticed the same thing?

Thank you so much. As a primarily rock & metal vocalist just recording at home in an untreated room, I think I will NOT waste my money on a large diaphragm condenser mic and just buy a decent interface to record the EV 767 dynamic microphone I already own. If the Shure SM58 sounds this good, I already know my EV 767 will sound light years beyond this plus do an even better job of rejecting the negative attributes of my untreated recording environment.

U87 if you just want something that sounds good out of the box with minimal editing. SM58 if you want a more neutral sound and want to work it in post. For the price, no question, SM58 all the way.

Thank you, but what do you mean with a "decent mic pream". I have a Behringer xenyx1202FX, is it decent enough?

This Video Proves it pays to have a Great Preamp. 10734 Makes the Sm58 sound better than the U87. Now hide a SM58 Element in the Body of a U87 and do a blind test to see if any one will notice.

hmm it's possible to mix the vocals from the Sm58 to get a more elegant (less rock sound)? I would like the vocals to blend in the mix and not stand out as much

A sm58 is solid for rock vocals
But if you can sing well... I'd stick with a condenser mic.

sm58 is a little edgier with little room sound but the u87 gives more detailed breath and more room sound
