  • My Timex Sinclair 1000 would boot to the 'K' cursor but only three keys would work. I tried trimming the "ribbon" which helped but 5 keys still wouldn't work. I then used self-adhesive copper foil tape to repair breaks in the lead.
I purchased the copper tape for about $6.00 from Adafruit - a great site: www.adafruit.c...
    I appreciate feedback and comments.

This is the machine that started my career. Well technically the ZX 81 which was rebranded by Timex. I just picked one up for nostalgic reasons and your video helped me get it functioning again. So thanks for that.

This video was amazing! (I know it is old now, but…)
Thank you so much for creating it!
I just bought a Sinclair 1000 off eBay and the keyboard does not work so I plan to open it up soon and try this fix. I can’t wait to see if I can fix it like you did yours.
PS. I am primarily a Commodore 64 guy, so loved to see your old breadbin sitting on your desk.

Glad the video was helpful. Hope your repair is successful. Love all those old computers. An Apple lle was my first computer and I still like to see it.

That dry rot is such a pain. Maybe put a little ArmorAll for future proofing?

The $29 price tag was when they were clearing them out. They'd discontinued them (which I didn't know) when I got mine. They were originally $99. I got one issue of Timex-Sinclair User magazine at my local book shop. Never saw another. Thing was a pain to program on with all of the text on screen refreshing with every keystroke. Still, I learned a lot.

It wasn't much when you look back on it, but it was still enough to get a lot of people interested in computers and programming (and maybe turned some off too)!

Where do you get that copper tape?
