Torrent, yes, but not more than many other pianists. Listen to Trifonov that some people here have pointed out as a much better pianist. Speed is about the same: Trifonov finishes 10 of the 12 Etudes in 22:46 mins when Jan Lisiecki's first 10 are completed in 22:54 mins...

Magnificent performance! Jan takes musical risks, brings out the difficult lines and plays with power, clarity, fantasy, character...he communicates throughout. His approach is way beyond the ubiquitous smooth, perfect mezzo mezzo and the way his career has developed is ample proof that Jan is an extraordinary talent of the highest quality. Bravo!

actually his voicing is quite clunky and muddy, and his playing is quite labored. notable in the first etude especially. if you want to hear a real master perform that piece who successfully "brings out the difficult lines", it would be seong jin cho. literally the first round of the chopin competition in 2015, one of the best interpretation ever of the piece.

@@wanf872 you’re point is well taken, especially if I really get picky (and listen with headphones!) in certain sections here and there. It’s a live performance on God knows what piano set up…and he’s trying to project rather than playing in a cubicle… :) Dunno. Among the very best complete sets I’ve heard is Zlata Chochieva’s, which I just compared with Lim’s. Definitely worth listening to both. Gramophone Magazine rates Zlata’s cd “one of the top 10 Chopin recordings of all time”. Anyone who doesn’t know her playing is in for a surprise, both musically and technically. Her live performances of all 48 are equally astonishing. Check her out and LMK your thoughts. Cheers!

Jan Lisiecki improved himself in this recital! He finally managed it now to play the most difficult op.10,4 in the prescripted 176 Mälzel! Bravo! In he official video he only could perform it with much effort with weak 160 Mälzel! Lately I discovered Nokolai Leschenko with astronomic 223 Mälzel without pedal overtaking piano goddess HJ Lim with 192 and even early Richter with 211 Mälzel!

People are being quite disrespectful towards the music. Why cough in the middle of a performance? This has, in fact, happened for a long time. When Rachmaninov performed and someone coughed, he would skip playing a composition from the repertoire. I would understand.

@@musiclover148 Daniil Trifonov performed the Etudes virtually flawlessly at the Rubinstein Competition in Tel Aviv in May, 2011. He was 20 years old. He is also an accomplished composer in addition to being possibly the greatest pianist in the world. It isn't fair to anyone to be held up to him for comparison.

    • @musiclover148

I have heard Trifonov's Rubinstein performance. He learned the etudes in a very short time. I have worked on some of them and performed several, but ten more years would not help me play them as either of these guys does.

@@einmarmor LOL! Zyrtec is an allergy medication. What does that have to do with insightful piano playing? To set the record straight though, his occasional messy note is a little distracting but shouldn't interfere with what he has to say at the keyboard. He has been able , with the support of sponsors who believe in him, to bypass the competition circuit and after all, isn't the competition all about gaining exposure to start a healthy career? Perhaps he'll use this Pandemic isolation time to clean up the little irritations. Cheers.

I wasn’t a fan of many of the Chopin finalists. Sure they played cleanly but at what cost, honestly. It saddens me that so many listeners see classical music as a sport now of ‘the less wrong notes you play, the better you are’.
Regarding Lisiecki. He’s a consummate artist even at the age of 18 here, I’m not going to even bother dissecting how many aspects of his playing I admire in this video as I’m sure they’ll fall on deaf ears. But no, I wouldn’t say he just got the contract because he is ‘good looking’.
