- Daniil Trifonov performs Chopin - 12 Etudes op. 25 at the Arthur Rubinstein Piano Master Competition (May, 2011, Tel Aviv).
Since its inception in 1974, the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition is one of the foremost Piano Competitions in the world. Arthur Rubinstein, who gave his blessing to the competition, headed the jury of the first two competitions (1974 & 1977).
The competition, is held every three years in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Trifonov is one of the only pianists, who is able to give importance to all the voices. If you are hearing to the bass or to the hidden middle voice, he always give a sense and creates long lines. Even in Chopin's etudes, which are technically so challenging.
TRIFONOV is one of the 21st century's APEX PERFORMERS, of which there are quite a number, but not as many as the millions of pianists who are classical music pianists throughout the world in universities, concert venues, chamber music societies affiliations, etc.
These Apex Performers set the standards for musicianship, technique, skill, devotion and perfection for the rest of the pianistic herd to learn from, emulate and "deify", as it were, in our present time and century.

Техника - это средство для игры на рояле ,но главное -палитра и звук. Ноты-это палитра,а звук -краска. Мы слушаем исполнителей ( и лучше с закрытыми глазами,так и пианисты поступают,чтобы лучше себя слышать ),а не следим за тем как бегают пальцы по клавишам. Согласна с Вами - Д. Трифонов имеет свой стиль,манеру,он узнаваем и в свои 20 лет ( запись тех лет),а сейчас ему ТОЛЬКО 22 -и так совершенно владеть инструментом---- зрело,глубоко ..

Absolutely classic way of playing Chopin. He is a stream, he is an air, he is a fairy tale story. I love watching his hands, they are like flying butterflies. So much soul in this music.

Dude imagine having to play octaves,winter wind and ocean all after eachother. That by itself is impressive but this man has performed all 12! Outstanding performance.
Exactly what i was thinking..
He is in state of flow during performance. Audience is not there, time is not important, its just a music and him. Thats why he can perform that all so brilliant.

Beautiful. I was so glad seeing this man winning the Tchaikovsky competition. He really deserved it. In my opinion he also was the true winner of the Chopin Competition - he is worlds apart from Avdeeva or Wunder in his musicality: he really feels the music he is playing and becomes a part of it. you can hear and see this. At the same time his interpretations are always honest and heartfelt, without any unneccessary exaggerations. He appears with an amazing modesty also.

Trifonov is a GENIUS.
Some of the freest, most elegant, sensitive, individualized playing of these etudes I've ever heard in sixty-odd years of listening. It's as though he were born to play Chopin.
He even LOOKS a great deal like Chopin, albeit a sturdier version.
Another of many wonderful artists playing before the public today.
It's so ironic: Instrumentalists and singers keep getting better and better as audiences shrink and grow increasingly indifferent to the glies of serious music.

What you write is so true: more and more astonishingly gifted musicians are trying to have careers in a world that increasingly isn’t interested.
Chopin was notoriously thin and lightly built to be fair. I read once that before his death he was only something like 50kg
I love his total involvement with themusic His expressive face, ARM lovements, indepently the Wayn he takes the music thoough his body and delights in it .

also Glenn Gould, Sviatoslav Richter, Vladimir Horowitz, Marcelle Meyer and probably a few others that I do not know well enough... But I feel the greatest genius since Glenn Gould ! His career confirmed it. He is actually in residence in Paris at Radio France and I am very happy to have booked five of his concerts. Lastly I heard him in a Scriabin sonata... exhilirating !!
The clarity on no 1 is absolutely outrageous. I think it is also a very piano. The whole play is pianissimo and legato absolutely outrageous how beautiful it is. What a genius Danil
I prefer by far Yunchan Lim, at 15 yo, extraordinary performance at Ysangyun competition that he has won… on TH-cam !… now he is 19 and won Van Cliburn international competition at only18 in 2022 !!
I think if Fréderic Chopin could hear this amazing performance of his Etúdes - by Daniil - he'd smile through his tears from emotion how wonderfully have been discovered his intentions by this young, amazing poet of piano...his approach to this music is just so personal love affair with feelings written instead of the musical text... Daniil gave completely different colours to Chopin's Etúdes, beyond any performances I heard in my life...mastery at any bar and phrases...

This pianist is truly special. He makes the piano sing before he even touches the keys.
I receive a deep soul massage every time I listen to Trifonov play and I feel renewed afterwards. He's a healer.

By far the best op. 25 etudes I have heard. So light yet clear.
When I was 11, January 31, 1959, my parents took me to hear Van Cliburn. He played Op.25 No. 11, "Winter Wind." That was a total spiritual and artistic awakening. Hearing these readings by the master, Trifonov, 51 years later was yet another spiritual and artistic awakening. Music is a way to let the light of God shine on ones soul and survive it.

I've been skipping over this one, thinking I had listened to the etudes quite enough. I'm so glad I finally listened to them. No, I had NOT head them before. This is an exceptional performance. I have never witnessed such a love affair between a pianist and his piano. God bless ;you, Daniil Trifonov! I wish I could enjoy life half as much as you obviously do.
The best version I've heard in my life of the Etude no 7 op. 25 in C sharp minor - at 12min48sec. Trifonov here "plays his life". Mesmerizing.
A rare instance of Chopin's use of quotation. The initial motif of this etude is a quotation from the introduction to Act 2 of Bellini's Norma.
His every phrase sings, his rhythms dance. His sense of balance in sonority is uncanny. Trifonov possesses a delicacy of touch and commands a range of tone colour rarely seen. Truly remarkable.
He's just enjoying the music he's playing. There's no harm in endulging oneself with music.
This might be one of the most beautifully-voiced performance of the etudes I've heard. Especially noticeable in 1, the middle section of 5, and 7. Masterful performance by Trifonov.
this guy uses silences and rubatos as possibly no one does when playing the more rapid etudes, thereby making for thrilling listening and also distinguishing detachment and grief from despair and anger.. very beautiful
OMG, I felt the anticipation in the pause just before he began to play - and the anticipation was worth it. I was almost in tears of beauty listening to the 1st etude of this group. Aeolian harp is my favourite piece of piano music ever.
Ever since i heard these etudes for the first time - some 30 years ago - i hoped that once i would hear them performed in this way, as the timeless masterpieces that they are. Thank you very much Daniil.
Reading some of the criticism below makes me very sad. Why can listeners not just enjoy the wonder of whatever good music is put out? Young Daniil does an exceptional job and I for one can hear the difference between him and some other players. Give the youngster time to unfold and avoid killing an exceptional person and musician with bad criticism!
+SoulNotes1 I could not agree more and cannot for the life of me understand viscious non-constructive criticism. To me, he is pure genious, with enormous sensitivity and the ability to communicate. I rarely watch his face because I nearly always close my eyes when I listen to music.

From the moment he began - not even 55 seconds into the performance - I knew I was in the presence of greatness. The first etude was extraordinary alone. So much so as to eclipse even Rubinstein. The F minor was of wings tipped of silver. Each etude thereafter was no less beautiful, no less exquisitely conceived. There is such complete accord here between all components . Utterly flawless work! To say even "Bravo" seems harsh in the face of such beauty, but bravo......Bravo!

he is my favorite big-name pianist. now in 2023 his musical maturity is so extraordinary- the way he touches the piano you don't even hear the key stroke, just the note. alternately delicate and powerful the style is so distinctive I think he'll go down as one of the greats.

@@onlyfacts3101 they are very demanding as the ”etude” is a piece meant to develope technique. Essentially he shows up and shows that he masters 12 extraordinary difficult techniques. On top of that he shows his mature sense of musicality at the same time. And this is live (imagine the pressure!).
The etudea by chopin are very popular because they combine the technical difficulty with musicality, making them pleasant to listen to and practice.

That no.1 always brings a smile to my face. He plays somehow in an unmodernised way, it sounds as though its being played by a genuine romantic pianist in the romantic period. The articulation is not just the typical play as legato as possible, its delicately measured.
Playing it and listening to it makes me smile too :)
That no.1 is something else really. Cuts my ties from this world every time I hear it. You should try hearing it from Daniel Barenboim from the encores album too, I can't decide which interpretation is touching my heart better.

Oui, il est vraiment exceptionnel, il rend intelligibles des pièces compiquées parce qu'il garde toujours le fil conducteur de la mélodie même quand elle est enfouie comme un petit ruisseau sous la végétation foisonnante des arpèges et des accords.

Jouer ces 12 études, et terminer par octave, winterwind et océan à la suite avec une telle finesse c'est une prouesse que je ne pensais pas possible.
