I'm nearly 70 and I've been reading comics since the '60's. During the 1960's there were often suggestions in the letter columns for new members for the Legion of Superheroes, sometimes with artwork. One example is Jim Shooter's 1966 "One of Us is a Traitor" in which 4 new characters were introduced written by the 14 year old Shooter. I remember as late as the 1980's editors would ask for suggestions for costumes and characters from the readers, particularly in Legion of Superheroes and Dial H for Hero. One of the reasons that the members of the Legion had such outrageous costumes in the 1970's.
Legion of Super Heroes often utilized fan voting for Legion Leader, with the Legionnaire receiving the most votes taking the mantel. This tradition made for some interesting character development when unlikely candidates won.
That was actually one of my favorite parts of the Legion of Superheroes Comics. They did it all the way untill they Cancelled the First Series. They got some rather interesting heroes to Chair it(my favorite actually being Triplicate Girl's brief stint as Leader)...
@@Solitaire001 that was the great thing about the Legion Election's, you Legit had NO idea who was gonna win and it was hilarious watching the writer's come up with the reasons they were selected and why ...
You've teased us with it, now you've GOT to cover "The Devil and Lois Lane"! It'd be interesting if they did a contest like this now while keeping the rule that you have to send a PHYSICAL letter in order to vote - though that might result in comically/depressingly small turnout.
This reminds me of that 60's Teen Titans comic in which Beast Boy meets the group and the issue ends with Robin telling the readers to vote if they want to see the green kid as a permanent member of the team. The fact Beast Boy didn't join the Titans until the Wolfman/Perez Rebirth in the 80's should say enough about that contest 😅
Hair is important. Matter of fact, hats are important. I remember reading "The Walking Dead" and the art was so rough in that comic that sometimes literally the only way I could figure out which character was talking was to say to myself "Well... Carl was wearing the hat earlier so I *think* this is him talking..."
A fun one Sasha, but will admit you can't tease Leopard Girl and Lois selling her soul to the devil and not do those as videos! :D Hope we get to see those added to the Lois Lane playist/vids in the future. Also, I'm with you, of the presented options C was the best there. Great work CC!
Schaffenberger was so right about Wayne Boring's art, especially his Lois. Curt Swan will always be my favorite Superman artist, but Schaffenberger is high on my list as well, especially for his "Mr. and Mrs. Superman" stories in Superman Family.
I figured out that write in contests don't mean anything from an issue of Gen 13. It was a "you write the next issue" with a bunch of crazy options but I was old enough to realise that it would take more than a week to correlate the letters, write then draw the book and get it shipped out.

Personally I liked the Pearl hair the best. Though I am curious, considering the Leopard Girl long hair got brought up in both hair letters/responses, why did they not include long hair as an option in the poll? Was Schaffenberger afraid it would win and didn't like long hair Lois so he didn't add it? It makes sense since the example you showed for the Bronze age had that after he left the book.

Agreed. Redheads were the "diversity" of the early 20th century. It's notable that actors like Kristin Kreuk and Mehcad Brooks play Superman's supporting cast more recently.
Many comments on this video from veteran comic entusiasts seem to fondly recall a yearly contest to vote in for the leader of the Legion. I think it would be a good idea (if you're into it of course) many of then would appreciate a video with you covering it, and as a super casual comic reader just getting into comics I know I would for you to give us a look at what that level of fan engagement must have been like.
I'm invested in Lana Lang! SHE should have had the third best selling comic instead of that harpy Lois! *angry spit*....oh, and I guess I would go with the pageboy cut... I guess. Just no mohawk please.

Totally thought you were going to talk about those hideous pointed bangs Lois wore in the 80's/early 90's. UGH! I learned a lot from those letter columns, too bad they're gone.
Loved the video! The fan voting thing was always exciting my favorite was the Legion of Superheroes when you voted for who would be the leader over the next year. I loved the Silver Age and wish more elements of that time were integrated into today's industry. Thank you for reminding of the hair styles as well and revisiting the older great artists and writers!
I used to know Kurt Shaffenberger back in the ‘90s and always complimented him on his precise drawings of … well, everything. His line work was impeccable and his version of Supergirl is still my favorite to this day. I always blame the “grandma look” of 1960s Lois to the popularity of Marilyn Monroe and her signature shorter hairdo. Wasn’t just in comics, look at movies and tv from that era versus the Veronica Lakes and Rita Hayworths long hairstyles of the 1940s, before Marilyn. Kurt was a super-great and incredibly humble guy and set the bar for the rest of us.
I remember learning that when young justice 1998 was looking for a new leader, they let the fans vote! Wonder girl won by a hair, but impulse came in i think third or fourth place despite not being an option lmao. He was written in by fans enough times that he actually placed in the competition, i think above Superboy? But don't quote me on that
I like the C cut. In fact, it looks like Lois from John Byrne's style when he rebooted the Man of Steel. You can see it in the splash first panel entitled Enemy Mine on a Google search.
Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane is just the comic that keeps on giving. I really wanna hear about that issue where Lois sells her soul to the Devil to marry Superman.
I’m crying Lois look SOOOO good in the C one, that’s the one I would have voted for. But I do agree it doesn’t super fit her characterization at the time. Although I think it does kind retroactively suit the characterization of modern Lois.
I personally have the pet theory that the reason Lois was never permanently Married was cause, ounce the Guy in Question found out how much High Maintenance she was(let's be honest here; She was constantly trying to get herself killed. I mean, how many times did Superman have to actually Save her in ONE ISSUE?!), they ditched faster than the Crew of a Paper Boat out on the Water ....
Have you seen the different food variant contests? It would go something like that where a big group of people would submit clearly stupid options for others to vote on if done via social media.
Closest thing to a fan vote I ever participated in was for the 2003 Clone Wars cartoon. It was on the Star Wars website and you didn't have to register fortunately, so a at the time 11-year-old like me could participate. All it was for fans was to pick which Jedi from a multiple choice selection would be used in the season finale in a very brief scene. I can't remember the name, but I know it was the Wolfman looking Jedi with a green lightsaber, which was the one I voted for. Fortunately the other two choices were used in the second season for the scenes where the Jedi try to protect Chancellor Palpatine from General Grievous. They might be insignificant votes, but it's pretty cool for younger fans
Lois Lane's hair was still a point of contention even in 2016 in the Zack Snyder films, th-cam.com/video/RC4qia-GQbU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=myTrpaDbuHtlVE5F&t=601
The longest running fan contest in comic history was the annual vote for Legion Leader; It'd be fun to do an episode on that. I did the Robin vote (I voted for Jason's death)
The more I learn about Silver-Age Superman, the more I wish we got some kind of TV adaptation of 50s and 60s Superman comics. Batman got the 1966 live-action series and TBATB, but Supes got jack.
Agree that not all the hairstyles scream Lois, but maybe that's because I am too used to modern Lois, who's hair is usually long and unbraided. That's why I would vote pony tail Lois. (About Mohawk Sue, Jesus Christ, Mohawk Storm was a bet and it is arguably one of the best character designs ever, but it surely doesn't work with any character)
The Robin costume contest in Batman Family which had an entry from the late great Norm Breyfogle stands out as a concept of fan participation that went nowhere. Mr. Grayson needed to lose the shorts as Robin during his actual 44 year run as The Boy Wonder not retroactively.
Artistically, Lois has always been one of my Barbies! Since L&CTNAOS when Terri Hatcher sported that gorgeous bob in season 1, I’d draw her in all different outfits and hair lengths! Love her!!
Of those options, ponytail gets my vote. As others have said, it feels much more "active." The others give off vibes ranging from "secretary" to "Jackie O wannabe." The ponytail also looks like it would have the most options for variations: whipping around in the wind, being untied at the end of the day, etc.
Only read two part Lois Lane with Catwoman. I think it was printed in B&W (cheep paper) collection story book, so finding comics was great as you miss allot without colour. (Not shore if it was in this but) Like when Catwoman kissed Superman her comment "He kisses like a farm boy" just made me laugh. Good story.
If you're going to have a PO Box, please check it once in a while. I sent you an older weird comic that I thought you'd enjoy (Obnoxio the Clown #1) and ko-fied the import tariff, but it was returned after months for not being picked up.
I've had opinions on comic books and comic book characters, but they've never led me to write a letter/email or vote in any fan contests. That said, I kind of liked haircut C.
I would 100% have gone with the Mary Tyler Mooresque ruffle hair. No question. As for me, I'd really like to see at least one instance where fans vote for Legion leader like they used to do.
Whether by audience vote or just editorial decision, by 1967 they did change Lois’ hair and clothes to more fashionable styles of the time, though not always what might have seemed business appropriate for a reporter.
I think the contests could work well now days if they were like this. Small fun changes like hair styles that could generate engagement and some fun cosume/visual change but not enough to make people go super feral like Round Robin since it's not that significant. It would be just a bit of fun (and if it cmme with prizes cool).
As a huge Fawcett fan, I love the artwork of C.C. Beck and Shaffenberger. Shaffenberger's work on Lois and the other Superman family characters is great, but I have to stick with Boring for my favorite Superman era of art and stories. Just a preference, I guess.
Schaffenberger is maybe my favorite silver age DC artist. Boring, Plastino, Sprang and Swan felt like they were doing variations on the same house style but Schaffenberger was just different enough to stand-out.
That's amusing that the editor wanted to just keep her hairstyle the same, but the book's readers wanted Lois to change to address the times. I too picked "C" as my first choice. The others all would have worked I think, especially if Lois just had them for several months at a time. I remember the Sue Richards contest from the FF letter column. Crazy design that mohawk! Storm pulled it off, though, when she adopted her punk look in Japan when Logan was supposed to marry Mariko. I would really like to see some contests trying to bring the fans into it more. I think there is a much bigger disconnect sometimes in today's comics world between the readers and the creators.
I'm a lurker. I never wrote a letter back in the day. Thinking back, I kinda wished I had. I really, really loved comics as a kid in the '70s and '80s. And I would often read the letters section. It just never occurred to me, I guess, to write one. Also, I never understood Lois' appeal either, until Teri Hatcher took on the role. I remember a Superman/Superboy crossover trilogy in the '80s, where they bumped into each other in the time stream, or something, and switched bodies. Superboy, who was in love with Lana in his time, didn't find Lois very attractive (while he was inhabiting Superman's body in Superman's present), and tried hitting on Lana. I agree with Superboy. :)
I would've picked "E" for hair, assuming she didn't have to have the pearls to go with it. Also, the pearls would've just triggered Batman every time he saw them. (I know the pearls were retconned in later, but I still find delight in the premise)
I always thought the fix was in with that Lois Lane hairstyle contest. Weisinger didn't want to change it and that was that. More people wanted it changed than wanted to keep it the same, but there were so many options none of them could gather enough votes. Years later, they even changed her hair color. It went from the long-established black to brown in one issue without any explanation or fanfare. I liked it black. It made her stand out more. In fact, in the animated series, they made it black again.
For me, Lois Lane's best hairstyle is the long curly red hair that she wore in the first years of the post 1985 crisis era. Said Lois was, is and will always be the most beautiful of all 😍😍
I think contests like this are okay as they do not change that much, other things can be not a good idea to place in the hands of fans, especially if they can vote in multiple times. This is my opinion though. As for hairstyles, I agree with you, it's practical and easy to run out with in case of a scoop.
For me hair is all the rage, As Lillie thought the years tried multiple looks. Short, ponytail, Lusamine, custom. Even Modern my adventures of Superman yes anime lois. Even color Blue, black, pink bang, multiple colors. I even went full Bayonettaz But I like to keep it standard Lillie but allow my artist change to fit it style and design. For me it ponytail vote because it has energetic teenage vibes kinda. It the in between. I would go for the contest. Maybe one day I should have someone try drawing the leopard girl Lillie or Lusallie.
Which Hair Was Your Favourite?

I thought "C" might have updated Lois for the sixties.

I would really like to see some contests trying to bring the fans into it more. I think there is a much bigger disconnect sometimes in today's comics world between the readers and the creators.
The elections in comics are always fun. Though I'm still mad Matter Eater Lad has never gotten to be leader of the LSH.
i liked the ponytail the best but the one i would have really liked wasnt in the contest. i liked her long hair in the jungle issue, lol
The Ruffle Cut has a Mary Tyler Moore or Marlo "That Girl" Thomas vibe to it.
I read leopard girl. It's a Superwoman in Tarzan flavors.
Looking great Sash, hope all is well!
First off, your wig looks gorgeous. Second please cover Lois Lane jungle girl! Personally I would’ve voted for ponytail Lois. It’s a fun, cute, look.
For me, Lois Lane's best hairstyle is the long curly red hair that she wore in the first years of the post 1985 crisis era. Said Lois was, is and will always be the most beautiful of all 😍😍
They did do nice curls and waves in hair back then.
Have to agree. That was her best look to date.
Would love a video where Sasha just reads peoples comments and editors responses to Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane.
I had some jokes printed in the Wizard mag, that’s about it as far as as writing in to comics.
I think contests like this are okay as they do not change that much, other things can be not a good idea to place in the hands of fans, especially if they can vote in multiple times. This is my opinion though.
As for hairstyles, I agree with you, it's practical and easy to run out with in case of a scoop.
My favorite was the ponytail personally
For me hair is all the rage, As Lillie thought the years tried multiple looks.
Short, ponytail, Lusamine, custom. Even Modern my adventures of Superman yes anime lois.
Even color Blue, black, pink bang, multiple colors.
I even went full Bayonettaz
But I like to keep it standard Lillie but allow my artist change to fit it style and design.
For me it ponytail vote because it has energetic teenage vibes kinda. It the in between. I would go for the contest.
Maybe one day I should have someone try drawing the leopard girl Lillie or Lusallie.
out of the Options. Pinwheel bang or the Pony Tail. Though I much prefer her hair cut Post COIE.
Love this shirt Sasha has on here today. Big fan. It looks like... red velvet? The buttons give Minnie Mouse vibes that are elegant and cute!
❤
The only style I didn't like was the John Byrne short hair version when they revised Superman after Crisis on Infinite Earths.
