    This song is dedicated to his Aunt who passed away in 2007. She was the person who bought him his first guitar. The song was written in 2006 so she did get to hear it before she passed.

      I would say parts are improvised but other parts are established melodies you'll always hear when he's playing this particular song.

    • @colinfinney3340
      @colinfinney3340 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@justdave9610 yeah, it's the solos I'm talking about though. He has sort of a framework of a solo that he works within. Like how the beginning of the soothsayer solo always has that strangely timed bit, but if you listen to ten performances they're all a bit different while carrying the same vibe. It's interesting, because his set lists are usually fairly stable and formulaic, while the actual note by note of the same songs has a huge variation because of the solos. I guess it lets him stay in his comfort zone while still allowing space for improvisation. A fair amount of it is sort of shred head filler, but there's a lot of emotional content when you can see he's sort of feeling the song at the time. Interesting dude.

    • @holliswilliams8426
      @holliswilliams8426 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@holliswilliams8426 actually he doesn't play anything genuinely mindless, his improvised follow a scale, althought what's in that may be mindless but who knows, his nubbing sounds like a bunch of random noodling but actually follows a medieval musical code so we may never now

    I went to one of his concerts about 2 months ago. I'd listened to at least half of his 300-something albums, and had high expectations, but he surpassed them by miles. Everything he played was totally awesome. His performance was flawless. And yes, some of his fans at the show did wear buckets. Anyway, at around 9:20 you asked "how does he memorize that?", the answer is: he doesn't. He remembers the notes in the scale that the song is written in so that he doesn't play any wrong notes accidentally, and then he makes it up as he goes using little bits of what the studio version sounds like but with tons of variation. He has never played Soothsayer exactly the same way twice, every performance of the song is unique. I can play this song on guitar kinda well, and I've seen a lot of TH-cam covers of it, but nobody can make it sound the way Buckethead does.
    Edit: You should react to him playing Jordan live at the Culture Room, it's probably his best performance of that song.

    @Revelator2025 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That’s Bucket. He’s so special in so many ways. He’s produced more “albums” than any other musical artist in history for starters. That includes Frank Zappa. He dances like Michael Jackson, uses nunchucks like Bruce Lee, and has a mind of both a child, a giant Japanese robot, a heavy metal rock God and a walk-in from some Galactic place thousands of light years away. He also plays INCREDIBLE slap funk bass.
    He’s never taken a drug in his life (other than what he has to take now for his heart condition ♥️). He’s afraid (extremely shy) of women. He also wants to build his own amusement park one day. I discovered him years ago 1992 in the SF Bay Area and he ended up opening shows for the band I was in at the time and sitting in with us (band was MIRV).
    He’s a special soul and one of the most unique, technically capable and creative individuals out there. Thank you Brian/Buckethead. 🥰

    I hear you about being cursed with little hands and short fingers. My dad has played guitar longer than I've been alive, and I really did try to learn, too, but the little nubs I call fingers simply cannot do what is required.
    As for Bucket... "Mesmerizing" is my favorite word for him, too. In most live videos, the person recording ignores everyone but him. Can't count the times I've seen video of him waiting patiently while the bassist performs a killer solo off-screen.

    Hello X) Check him out in studio quality on good audio set. He has at least 420 albums, constantly releasing them. Granted, a shitload of his music is experimental and very heavy and can be really hard to get into, but still you have dozens of incredible albums with something like Soothsayer on them. I love these: Leave the light on, Wall to wall cobwebs, Worms for the garden, Night of the snowmole, Old toys.. These are 30 minutes long, hundreds of them. Also plenty of older LPs with more ambient stuff, or just really goddamn cool. Checking out what Buck did and does still do is in itself a journey impossible to complete even. And that's a good thing. Then there is a story, a persona, mysterious character raised by chickens, ravaging world with love, mosters, joy and horrors. Sounds crazy? of course it does. And it's beautiful.

    Hey Miss Awesome!! People went as far as analyzing the veins in his hands to ID him. I just sit back and enjoy the ride. He is insanely good..... Loved the looks and reactions from you. You were definitely into this. I'm sure somewhere in the world there is a Mrs. Buckethead that is happy for his insanely good hands. :) Artist at his level remember guitar chords like you and I memorize words to a play. Then there are some that never play the same way twice. Jimmy Hendrix often played his stuff a little differently, constantly evolving as they grow. Dang....really like your longer hair... Thanks for the flashback!! Luv ya, mean it!! \m/

    The two most generally accepted as best guitarists alive are Steve Vai and John Petrucci. Vai is a solo artist, but Petrucci is part of Dream Theater, with some solo work. You absolutely need to listen to both, but Dream Theater should be a priority. A good song to start on could be Panic Attack, but pretty much any song is good.
    As for Vai, Tender Surrender is an amazing starting point.
    Hope you see this! Have a good day/evening/whatever.

    I think for Buckethead, guitar is a language. He memorizes it like a speech. Each song is a story. There are five guitarists you must hear - Robert Johnson, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, BUCKETHEAD, and Tom Morello.

    In the rock/metal world, there are SO many great guitarists it's really down to personal preference as to who's "the best". For example, Buckethead's mentor, Paul Gilbert, is pretty good too. And Joe Satriani...and Steve Vai...and Gary Moore...and Stevie Ray Vaughn...and...well, you get the point :). For a change of pace, and a song with lyrics as well as some great guitar work, try Gary Moore "Still Got the Blues"...the one with 57 million views. The video quality isn't very good, but everything else is.

    His Led Zep tribute is crazy good .. Billie Jean .. Smooth Criminal … Jordon … Guns N Roses Live Shows. etc .. He has put out 300 albums on his own label. He has some Banjo and Bass tunes. Just all around nut. He gets to the hall in a van with a roadie and a few amps. None of the security or staff is allowed to talk to him or look him in the eyes and he is always wearing a mask.. Any communication is with the roadie. He plays, he slays .. He rides off into the sunset. There are no pictures of him after 1998 …

  • @trendpimp1

    He has huge hands (like Steve Vai) and Is amazingly economical in his movement.If you look at his picking hand,it looks like he's barely moving, yet he he is picking almost every note. He doesn't resort to sweep picking or tapping to accomplish super fast flurries of notes. Basically,it looks like he's not even trying. The best part is he keeps everything within the melody of the song.,which is quite beautiful on it's own. As impressive as all the soling is,it could get boring fast if the foundation of the song isn't solid. I can listen to Buckethead all day,as opposed to something like Dragonforce,which is so relentlessly over the top that I can only listen to a few songs before I zone out.To me,Buckethead is in the same category as Steve Vai and Joe Satriani-masters of guitar who never forget that melody is the key to a great song. Since I don't believe anybody can be "the best" in any subjective art form,I won't call Buckethead (or anyone else) that,I just simply call him a master,a virtuoso, someone any guitar player can and should learn from,.

    Guitarist Shawn Lane once composed a song called 'Kaiser Nancarrow' which Buckethead tried to play verbatim and nearly succeeded because he didn't know Lane composed Kaiser Nancarrow to be unplayable in real time. Buckethead is just that good. He was also a student of technical instrumental guitarist Paul Gilbert for a while, which is why his playing is so clean even with distortion effects piled on.
