      How did I not know about oat bran?? I’ve been wanting to minimize the glycemic index of what I eat, and this sounds like a better way to enjoy oats. I must try!
      My biggest morning pillar is journaling. For me, it’s clearing the mind, it’s spiritual, intention-setting, and mindset work. I can go from sleepy and grumpy to inspired about life just from a journaling session. Second most important to me would be moving my body-yoga or even just a handful of stretches and strength exercises that I know my body needs in order to correct my imbalances. That makes a world of difference in how I feel standing and walking throughout my day.

    • @amberlaird
      @amberlaird ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheScienceofSelfCare it’s mostly intuitive at this point because I have so many journaling tools I’ve worked with. But some examples would be listing all the things from the day before that I want to celebrate. Listing things that I want to manifest in my life. Writing about the nature of reality. Writing about how I want this specific day to go. Writing about my future vision for my ideal life as if it’s my current reality. It can get a little “woo-woo” but for me it’s incredibly powerful.

    Yey for rosacea video 😄 Thanks for the tip for the protein preloading tip, I am going to try it.
    For my non-negotiable morning pillars:
    1. "It's going to be an awesome day" - Maui habit of saying this as soon as you place your feet on the ground when you wake up (I've read it in Tiny Habits from BJ Fogg)
    2. Breath work for 15min
    3. Morning pages (3 pages of brain dumping) for about 40min
    4. Skincare (hyaluronic acid, vitamin c and spf)
    5. Supplements, green drink (chlorella, barley grass, lucuma, spirulina) and spearmint tea
    6. Fasting until 11 a.m. (during the first part of my cycle), in the second I'll have breakfast earlier
    7. Make a todo list for the day - I feel better, when I have a goal in mind for the day

    - drinking 500ml water
    - wash my face
    - hop on my yoga mat to do yoga for 20-30 minutes (Yoga With Adriene)

    . Meditate 20 minutes or more
    . Journal meditation experience, gratitude, intentions for the day
    . Walk 8k-12k steps
    . Breakfast: high fiber (steel-cut oats, raspberries/blackberries, a handful of raw almonds, a handful of raw pumpkin seeds) and an egg. Eat slowly.

    I do a lot of similar things to what you and some commenters have said, but one thing I really enjoy is making my bed. When I had a regular western style bed, that just meant tidying up the pillows and blankets. It was nice seeing a clean area every time I went into my bedroom for something, and felt like a cozy place to climb into bed at night that was ready just for me. I now sleep on the floor, similar to style of Japanese futons, so now making my bed means hanging up the blankets and mattresses to air out for a bit and then folding them up neatly in a corner. Sleeping on the floor has quite a few health benefits if you're interested in looking it up, but whatever way you sleep, having a nicely tidied area for bed has been one of the things that really makes my day.

    • @TheScienceofSelfCare
      @TheScienceofSelfCare  ปีที่แล้ว

      Love this! I have been veryyy interested in trying to sleep on the floor! Do you have any resources you’d recommend to learn about the Japanese style of sleeping? Is it typical to fold away your bed everyday?

      @serisaurusrex ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheScienceofSelfCare For me it's part of the bigger "furniture free" or "ground living" lifestyle, adding natural movement throughout the day that isn't necessarily exercise. I would recommend looking into the work of Katy Bowman and Petra Fisher.
      I like airing out the mattresses in the morning to give them a daily refresh. Just feels nice and helps prevent mold if you live in a humid place. And folding them up means you have more space during the day that you can use for other things, and makes it much easier to clean the floors!

    Totally agree. I wake up with meditation also (three to five minutes), then pee, brush my teeth, let the dog out. If I’m on the struggle bus I’ll put on sunscreen and clothes, then let my pup out so I don’t get stuck. Then we go for a walk or run. I like to do at least a mile but two or three if it’s not too hot or too icy or what have you. Then smoothie bowls in the summer and oatmeal in the winter for breakfast. Then I do a longer meditation (at least ten minutes), journal, read non-fiction for 15 minutes - anything so long as it interests me, currently, Winter Blues, which so far seems like a lot of patient stories and not much science, but I’m hopeful, and while I read I’m practicing grounding for the first time. I don’t think it makes a difference but we’ll see. When I’m doing my meditation and reading I’m outside. Then I try to get stuff done and then at lunchtime I read something for pleasure while I eat outside.
    In the winter, I’ll do the same stuff but I’ll meditate by a window or under a cozy blanket. I’m. Ew to grounding so maybe I’ll try a grounding mat if it seems helpful but tbd.
    I struggle with severe depression so morning goals (they don’t have to be in this order) really help me set the tone. I also try to make the bed but sometimes I just have to get out of the room because sleep is so seductive, which is why my first meditation is so short.
    I’m over 500 days of consecutive meditation though! Really has been a game changer and I had tried previously many times without improvement but it’s the consistency that’s key for me in noticing the change. One minute every day, for me, is better than longer periods on some days. My personal sweet spot where I feel i notice benefits is ten minute stretches, or more, but it took me time to figure that out. Starting small and being consistent was really the most important step for me.

    Great discussion!
    I'm no longer working 9-5; Life focus is now meaningful days not my career and achievement (I'm a Dr and other stuff... retired young to escape the rat race and burnout).
    My pillars:
    1. shower - sometimes cold shower
    2. Fresh cool glass of water, and a nice fresh espresso (I enjoy the ritual of grinding, making my espresso and steaming my water.
    3. Morning walk - 30-60min. Headphones and mindfulness are part of this.
    4. Saying hello and smiling at as many people as possible - I pass many of the oncoming/off-going medical staff from the hospital I live next to and they walk the same parklands as I do. Doing this caries an emotional up-swing into the day and perks others up (that's a genuine evidence based point :) ).
    5. Breakfast when I return home.

    I love the flexibility of framing your routine as pillars that support your day! This one led me to watch your earlier vid on rlt and I had a question: do you ever feel a sort of dependence on using your mask in the morning? I'm interested in trying it out, but I'm always a bit wary of trying new things that, if it were suddenly to be unavailable or inaccessible, I would really FEEL it and the impact of missing it on my day (akin to caffeine withdrawal). What do you think?
    So happy to have stumbled across your channel! Thank you for the chill vibe and considered content you put out!
    Oh! And "yes, please!" to sharing your morning skin care/makeup routine. Also, there was a brief clip of your makeup bag (I think)... do you remember where you got it?

    • @TheScienceofSelfCare
      @TheScienceofSelfCare  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your thoughtful comment! I know exactly what you mean by a “dependance” on items/tools/etc. In a sense I am “dependent” on the mask with my current routine. But if for some reason I had to part with it, I would probably replace this pillar with an outdoor meditation during my walk. So I always feel there are ways to adapt. :) And the reason I currently use the mask so much is because I genuinely love the experience of using it-so it’s worth the “dependence” for now!
      Re makeup bag: I got this bag at a thrift store and it’s SO handy! Just checked the brand: “lapoché”. It’s very good quality and the perfect size.

    I control my rosacea by avoiding the triggers: alcohol, chocolate, spices, and by avoiding irritants in my skincare and makeup, especially fragrance and many essential oils like peppermint. Also, no saunas or steam baths for me, and my shower is usually just warm, not hot or cold. I also had to learn to chill out because out of control emotions cause my face to burn too.
    For morning routines, I would find laying under that mask anxiety-producing and my thoughts would race out of control, not “clear my mind”. I need movement first thing, and accomplishing chores.

    Are you familiar with the Glucose Goddess Method?
    Her approach is to have a glass of vinegar water before eating and in this order: veggie, protein, carb.
    It's pretty similar to yours where you eat some protein before everything else.

    This is a work in progress for me, but now that my kids are in school full time, I'm focusing on some new things.
    In the morning, I also love going outside, which has been walks so far, but I'd like to improve my cardiovascular health/vo2 max as it is so strongly associated with a lower all cause morality, so I've starting a couch to 5k program as a way to ease into this.
    I can relate with the skincare, I do the same with red light, and like the idea of incorporating meditation into this to stack those habits together. 😊 I also like to present my best face, so skincare and some makeup.
    I end my routine with a good breakfast, which is usually oatmeal (thanks for the oat bran suggestion!), or a couole times a week eggs with sauted vegetables.
    Then I go about my day, with strength training some afternoons.
    Ps I'd love to know your favorite books on health and nutrition! Or podcasts, youtube resoruces, etc.

    just discovered your channel and really like your approach and perspective; very respectful. I used to enjoy wearing makeup so much but stopped because I"m concerned about all of the chemicals and how they might effect my overall health and endocrine. Do you have any concerns about these matters and makeup?

    • @TheScienceofSelfCare
      @TheScienceofSelfCare  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your thoughtful comment! 🤍 It’s something I do think about. I generally let my body and skin tell me what it likes. My skin is very sensitive and will quickly reveal if something is irritating. So I am picky about the makeup and skincare I put on my face.
      Another thing I always do is wear multiple layers of sunscreen and a natural primer under my makeup which creates a bit of a shield between the makeup and my skin. So far, the makeup I’ve been wearing has not made my skin worse and sometimes I even feel it keeps it protected in cities (where the air is quite polluted). Some brands I like that seem to have decent ingredients are Ilia and Kosas. But in terms of endocrine disruption, its not possible for me to say. Currently my hormones are very much in balance though.
      I think health sometimes requires making compromises between things that make you happy and things that are “supposed to be healthy”. Being happy contributes to being healthy. I have had periods where I wore little to no makeup and my skin was no better and I definitely felt less like I was expressing myself fully. So I’ve chosen to keep wearing makeup that I trust and feel good about. 😊

    • @TheScienceofSelfCare
      @TheScienceofSelfCare  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I usually cook it with water, protein powder, some sea salt and cinnamon. If you want it EXTRA delicious you can first toast your oat bran in coconut oil in the pan before adding liquids. Later I add cacao... A good dollop of nut butter. 😋 And my toppings vary from day to day.
      What kind of protein shake do you make? These days I have been enjoying a protein shake in the late afternoon after exercise. x

    Robin, what are your thoughts on some of the chemicals in face care products? I’ve been trying very hard to get rid of toxins in my environment

    • @TheScienceofSelfCare
      @TheScienceofSelfCare  ปีที่แล้ว

      I try to use kind, quality skincare that support my skin barrier. With makeup, I’m also very picky about what I put on my face-no fragrances or abrasive ingredients.
      I find my skin stays healthier with a consistent skincare and makeup routine versus just going barefaced outside and walking around relatively polluted cities.
      I think you should do what feels right to you and feels right for your body! My skin always lets me know if it’s not happy with a product or ingredient. It will breakout, become red, or feel weird. :)

    I would like to respectfully comment on the oat bran. My understanding is that brans are high in arsenic, and that while adults may be able to deal with it, more research is needed to decide whether or not this is good for developing brains. I'm not sure whether all brans are the same, but it sure is hard to remember which are and which are not if there are differences.

      I know whole grain rice can often contain arsenic. Apparently wheat and oats contain less arsenic than rice? Still something I need to read more about / investigate further! Like you said, this may be especially relevant for the younger developing humans among us.
      Still sad, because I love the way rice and oats make my body feel. This is like the day I found out my favorite dark chocolate contains many heavy metals!! Haha moderation is key I suppose. :)

      Hey thanks for sharing your perspective! To me, dressing and grooming ourselves in a way that makes us feel attractive (even if influenced by the society around us) is a form of self expression. Personally, I think it’s fun and playful. And I know many people who all do their makeup in very different ways (despite living in the same society). Not everyone has to feel this way or agree with it. :) that’s just my current relationship to makeup, which is likely to evolve over time. In my eyes, each of us is welcome to present ourselves however we like to-there’s no one way to be.
