Because you see light and hear sound. Light reaches your eye faster than sound reaches your ear. That's why you can often see things before you hear them. Like at a baseball game. When the batter hits a ball, you might notice a slight delay before you hear the sound after you see the ball being hit. The same goes with gunshots. The further away you are, the later you'll hear the gunshot after you see it.
