0:13 Excellent picking technique. All wrist no arm. Listen to how crazy fast the pick is striking back and forth, almost like he's tremolo picking one string at a high bpm except he's alternating between 2 strings. His technical ability is definitely top tier for someone who's playing isn't centered around metal.
Those lists always suck. Doesn't matter who makes them; once you get to that level of playing I don't think it really works to line guitarists up like that.
I love how he can quite clearly shred (he didn't seem to be tapping too), but he still chooses to be humble and mature about his skills and play what he wants even though he can probably play well beyond the expectations most have for him.
Also, his chords voicings are very meticulously thought out, not just done by feel. He went through a period during By The Way where he was studying composers like Charles Mingus and Stravinsky. He learned how to effectively use and voice chords that are more rare for rock players to know how to do (like diminished/half diminished, augmented, alternate, and sus2/sus2). His playing around that time was brilliant because it was very minimalistic, yet very complex in thought and execution.
ive never heard a bad thing about fruiscante except in one video they said he's not 'known for being technical' although they followed it up with examples of extremely technical riffs like snow
What I really like about John's playing is his attack and rhythmic timing. So many shredders put all their time into making every note sound the same because fluidity is their goal. Shredding just feels likes drones; no new ideas since the 80's. John actually slows it down and chooses how he's going to attack individual notes and how he's going to time them (see Strip My Mind). That takes way more thought and planning than just repeating licks from your practice.
Most guitarists compared to what? I’ve been playing since I was 15, and do not consider myself a “professional” player and I can play better than him. He’d a great song writer and talented over all musician. Perfect for RHCP. But his guitar skills are not that amazing.
@@K3vinK His guitar skills are phenomenal for how he uses them, especially in a sense of creating ACTUAL music instead of blubbering about how you can play a few licks that "sound" better than his overall career of guitar playing. Navarro fan, go figure.

Sometimes I feel bombed that people judge John for this particular guitar solo. Since when has playing guitar been about soloing only? This man has a lot of amazing guitar parts which he contributed to the history of recorded music. He's not a shredder, so obviously shred fans won't be impressed by his soloing. It's his creative and original compositions which gives him the credit he deserves, he's not overrated. Also, he never solos the same twice, which is awesome. Emotion > technique.
People tend to think that what they look for in guitar technique is correct. So, they think that guitarists who don't have that "correct" version of technique are weaker players. But I think that a truly insightful person knows how to extract value from something, regardless of their personal preferences. And you can find a positive comment from just about anyone who's played with John. RZA, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Dave Gahan, Stephen Perkins...
The best thing about Frusciante is his combination of passion, skill, style, devotion, ambition, he's a cool fella, his ability to work with othe rmusicians and his undergroundness mixed with being a stadium guitarist. tl:dr Frusciante is a god.
John's best and most unique quality has ALWAYS been his feel. Plenty of guitarists can play this fast at the highest level, but John's one of the few who can make the notes really speak to you and come up with a solo or an accent that may not be complicated but it'll be PERFECT for the song and just slay you right there. The technical skill involved in it is nearly irrelevant, because that the feel is the true purpose of playing music...IMHO.
you know... these photos and videos of hendrix or frusciante as they play the guitar... it's like they're having a gasm of sorts. but when I see many guitarists shredding they look like they're gonna explode from overheating. When it's sensibly used speed too has its rightful place in music but not all the darned time or every opportunity one can. it's the same with those power vocals, they call them that, I suppose... I'm like, cool, you can go across hell knows how many octaves with vibrato and all but where's the melody? where's the idiosyncracy in your voice, breath and gasp and explode and fade and croak and talk and growl and scream and hum and whisper and sigh... where's any of that?
You just gotta check it out, you cant get your mind in that position where your judging each song for what you can get out of it. Just gotta listen to them for what they are and there basically good sounds and good vibes. John and the rest of the band pour there heart into every song, so even if you dont like something atleast its not offensive cause they were being true to the loving feelings that they were feeling.
He's not a technical wonder, but he's all heart and that's what it's about. It's all about what you got to say and knowing how to "talk",John does this so well,2-3 notes from him speaks volumes and he knows where to "do it". It's rare to see a musician have so many of those "wow" moments in the course of a song, he just takes you places and that's what music is about, taking the listener where you are as a musician and bring them into your world. Not many can do this,it's not about 100's of notes;)
