  • Porcelain plates this week. Thrown and trimmed, together with a short show and tell of my favourite turning tools. I've included links to the tool maker's below, (none of these are ads of sponsored links, I'm just a fan of handmade tools).
    Jaejun Lee trimming tools, (these aren't always available): leejaejun.com/
    Phil Poburka trimming tools, (enquiring is best): bisonstudios.com
    Spinner tool by Richard Carter, (best to enquire): / richardcarter6952
    Rubber kidney, made by Mudtools: mudtools.com
    My throwing gauge is made by Darren Ellis, (www.darrenellispottery.com/sho...)
    I also forgot to mention in the video but the shiny brass tools I used to flatten the surface of the thrown plate, or as seen in the thumbnail for this video, were made by Marc Blaizeau, who sent me a pair to use. They can be found on his Etsy: www.etsy.com/fr/shop/marcblai...
    Timecodes:
    0:21 - Wedging clay
    1:00 - Throwing the plate
    7:33 - Showing the wheel, (Rohde HMT-500)
    7:48 - The tools
    9:52 - Trimming the plate
    18:15 - The finished form

    Hey guys! Merry Christmas or happy holidays to all those watching. I hope you've had wonderful time off thus far. Just to say, I'm sorry if the audio is a little off this video, I'm still recovering from you-know-what and have been isolating over the holidays. Hopefully I will be back to my full self soon.

      Big brother didn't use the video by mistake, but I deleted your video, you could have claimed the copyright if you wanted, then you would have benefited there. But why give a copyright strike, it hurts others, and to harm people as human beings is a good deed later? If you claim copyright you get all the profits but due to the copyright strike the channel is closed or does not work. If you hurt others, you will lose yourself one day. Proverbs. Learn to do good without harming others. Then one day someone will come to your aid.

      If you tool your ware on a bat, then you can lift up to feel the weight and check for thickness that way. Also, a flat rib can be used to compress a vertical outer wall into place without using outside pressure, avoiding a wobbly clay wall. And, I like your assortment of fine tools and equipment as well as keeping a tidy space. Props

    I've been binge-watching all your videos, and I'm constantly impressed by how meticulous you are in every step of the process. This care, along with your calm, measured voice and clear explanations, make every one of your videos both instructional and calming, a combination of ASMR and learning! You have the neatest, cleanest studio and everything is just so. Your work is beautiful and just about as near-perfect as pottery is capable of being. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge in such a wonderful way! I'll be looking forward to shopping your next show on Instagram!

    Nice video and a very fine plate, you make it look so easy, and I know it’s not.😊 I understand the purpose of most of the tools that you presented, but what do you use the spinner for?

    • @floriangadsby
      @floriangadsby  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you! It's used to apply downward pressure to a pot to hold it in place as I trim. In theory you can do the same process with your hand but the spinner stops grogged clay from sanding down the pads of your fingers and it also means you can apply downward pressure that's distributed across the bottom of a pot, rather than it all being focused through your fingers. Like lying down on thin ice as opposed to standing up. If a pots base it thrown thinly using one of these can help prevent it from bowing inward and deforming.

    That's a very deep plate! If I saw that out of context I'd probably call it a bowl. I suppose you can't throw shallow plates due to the large overhang, would that be a job for a mould instead?

    Hey Florian - great video as always. Question - how has Covid affected your business? Have you had difficulty purchasing clay? Or any other resources?

    • @floriangadsby
      @floriangadsby  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It hasn’t affected sales or anything, rather sourcing raw materials has become a lot harder. Brexit hasn’t helped either in that regard and some clays and other such things have become more difficult to obtain and more expensive too.

      You can throw circular plates and then cut the sides afterwards. Or you can use moulds or you can slip cast them or just hand-build them, there are plenty of ways of doing it.
