Brilliant video yet again! Informative and a very useful gauge on how the tool preforms, thank you indeed Tools & Stuff! I reckon the 18 will go up for sale and the xgt router will be coming in the tool box in the near future😃👍🏻 & id say once you become proficient with a router you’ll be happy using the round base but for a novice I can see the square base giving them a lot bigger/easier reference to go off 👍🏻 thanks again for the fantastic video mate your a star!🤩👍🏻

Great review, always helpful to have real life matchups! I use a Bosch corded trim router but sort of shopping around for a cordless and like Makita's tools. Two suggestions for them, what's the use of having lights with a black base plate you can't see through? Clear base plates really help with set up for other than edge trimming, so why clear plates for Japan and not for the states? Second, I agree with having a screw style "micro" adjustable base, much more accurate and they stay where you put them. Guess I'll keep looking.

Great in depth review. Just to throw a spanner in the gears, I also own the dewalt trimmer. It's my preferred although it's corded. More power, better lighting, lots of visibility, superior height adjustment, and bigger base.

    Hello there!
Thank you so much for all of the great content. I wanted to say that this is the best Makita channel on TH-cam!
Just wanted to give you a suggestion for a future video, if you have not made it already. The difference between corded routers, cordless compact routers, routers, and trimmers. I am interested in purchasing the 40 V Makita router (because I love the 40 V line) but I don’t know exactly what it is capable of and if it will do you everything that one of the bigger corded routers will do. I personally find this a confusing topic.

The square base is great if you just need to plunge in accurately and you don't have the plunge attachment, so basically leaning it on one of the straight sides and slowly rocking it into position. With a round base this moves around far too much to achieve this.

Hi, thanks for the review, great work. I just get rid of Milwaukee router because I couldn’t use it with Makita rail guide and Makita gave me 18V router for 2 weeks test. Comparing to milwaukee exactly the same trimming result with the difference of more accessories to use… with milwaukee depths adjustment was nice and the same time annoying because during trimming I hold it in my hand with a finger exactly on the adjustable wheel. In result unwillingly I changed adjustment almost every time… so now I wonder if I should wait for 40V or take 18V. your video helped me a lot. Thanks. It’s just a matter when they will offer 40V version in Poland…

If you're using a template for routing hinges or something the circle template is sometimes to small and drops into the template. If that makes sense. That's why there is a bigger square one.

well i would expect if you take the square base then its easier to take measurements off it. then can use as a template from which to make your own customized and uniquw per-job router bases. so in that situation you are probably indexing directly off the square edge, or indexing from the absolute position of the 4 mounting holes. to determine how far away in your custom base it is from the central router bit. because indexing directly from the central bit will you still have to locate and drrll the 4 mounting holes anyhow. and with a right angle of an edge its easier to double check dimensions etc. at least i would assume this is easier than with circle as the template. but if your custom jig is a seperate work holding item... and not actually something attached to the router itself. then maybe the circular base makes more sense? IDK which strategy is overall easier though. perhaps it varies for different jobs

Nice review, thanks :) Thanks for pushing the routers to the point of stalling .. that is very valuable information to me.
Many, many years ago I had the little silver body Makita 240V trimmer and I loved it. For some bizarre reason I let it go when I decided to invest massively in Festool. I also let my monster 2200W Hitachi router go at the time. TWO MISTAKES :(
Anyway, wind the clock forward and along comes the little 18V Makita trimmer and I love it. I thought it'd be cumbersome compared to the small 240Vs but it's just a little top heavy and only noticeable when you use it at an angle. Being a lazy SOB I've got a couple of them so they can remain setup for different trim jobs. The 40V you are reviewing here ticks a lot of boxes and the fact that it fits all of my existing accessories is awesome. I love using dust collection in the workshop, but if I can take a piece outside and use a cordless tool - that's my choice. I'm in fact designing my next workshop as an indoor/outdoor setup. A grunty unit like this 40V that can slot a board without bogging down is perfect - Makita need to offer an offset base to use this with their guide rails.
I've tried really hard to avoid more battery brands and styles. Dewalt did it well with Flexvolt but Makita didn't follow their lead with their 40Vs sadly. Hitachi is a mess with its Hikoki + Metabo quagmire of battery connections! My battery charging area is a busy area and I can see why mobile tradies "choose a colour" ! Looks like Makita 40V is finally coming to my place. REALLY annoying too as I've picked up a recent Makita tool and chose to go 18V instead of 40V to avoid further battery proliferation (3/4" impact wrench). Oh well.

Hi, yes routers do fire the dust everywhere. However some of us can't work with dust. Wood dust has , for years, been regarded as a carcinogen but not treated as such. A couple of years ago festool came out and publicly acknowledged this. About the same tim the American government cracked down on silica dust in a big legally enforceable way. May I ask you to include dust extraction with all your great, realistic, reviews. It is great to hear the motors in a real life way and compare performances. Thankyou.

Festool routers come with a cup that clips on for bearing guided edge trimmers which is very effective at dust collection and a larger square attachment that clips onto your fence for fence guided edge trimming, fairly effective.
I’m always surprised at how much sawdust is created by even the smallest chamfer/round over bits and value these attachments!

Question: What's the going price on your Hikoki 36v Palm trim router? Lol

    Hello, all!
Tools & Stuff is showing that the 40 volt version is more powerful than the 18 volt version. I would like to know if this make the 40 volt version vibrate more while using it, or if the vibration between the two is about the same despite one is more powerful than the other one. The reason why I am asking this is because I have an oscillating tool that vibrates pretty badly when I select the maximum speed, so I don't know how this particular tool compares to the oscillating tool in terms of vibration.
It would be nice if someone can answer, I would greatly appreciate it. 🙂

It does not vibrate like a multi tool.

    • @ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL
      @ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL  ปีที่แล้ว +2

40v does not vibrate more. It has more power so will vibrate less with larger bits.

I am very grateful for your kind and concise response, Tools & Stuff. It truly has been very valuable, as now I have more knowledge about how much vibration the 40volt version produces.
      Thank you again. ^__^

Your help has been vastly appreciated. ^__^ I am feeling more confident about how this tool will perform, and how it will help me in any project where this tool is needed to achieve good results. In my case, I am planning to install a new door, and I am hoping this tool will help me get a good installation. Since it will be the first time I use this tool, I will have to learn how to use it first before I finally proceed with the installation. However, despite I still haven't used it yet, I do know it will be a very useful tool to have, indeed. 🙂

      Why wait
I have been enjoying the 1/2 full size Hikoki for over 8 months now and can't put it down
Such a joy to use and I'm finding all kinds of uses for it that I wouldn't have with a corded version
Plus we bought a second one for the job site to put in a router table and have used the AC adapter on that one for more production work in jobsite+Hikoki Multivolt batteries work in the 18V and 36V-not sure why Makita didn't do this unless they want me to ditch all of my 18V and gave to buy all new 40V tools

Only thing i hate about the 18v or maybe all off them is that there is no warning when its getting low on battery other than you have to listen to the motor. Would be nice if the light flashed at you or something. Yes i know you should check the battery charge before you start but thats no excuse for not having some warning system in place.I ran mine on purpose till it stop to see how it acted and other than motor slowing down then just stopping no warnings. The last thing you want is the router to stop mid way threw.
