- The Dewalt Power Stack went up against the Makita 40v Max when I took a ride out to my (friend) VCG Construction last week. We tested both battery platforms against each other, but unfortunately there was some cheating involved.

The xgt impact is so cool for the modes. I use them all the time. Speed is beneficial for huge lag bolts or thick screws if you’re doing them all day. On avg I’m not holding the trigger down all the way. The makita has a function that starts slow and doesn’t speed up until it feels torque is needed, which is awesome. It also has a function where it sinks drywall screws to the exact depth. It’s unreal. The xgt impact is a jack of all trades and in my opinion a master of all trades

Yea makita has better over all impact cuz the modes but dewalt has the variable trigger as well. I never go balls the wall. Really only thing dewalt is lacking is more modes but I think is almost their thing at this point for the people that prefer simple tools.

yes, exactly, Makita trigger is unbelievable I can use in very low speeds. Don't matter that is 20V or 40V because this small tools don't require a lot of power. But for grinder, man, the 40V is way superior of 20V, i have both.
No one cheated. They are both equally impressive. How long can they keep it up would be the defining moment.
That's really just going to come down to which drill is using a higher WH battery. In this case, the makita is 160wh while the dewalt is only 40wh. The makita would drill roughly 4x as many screws. This doesn't mean the makita is better than the dewalt, just that they used very different batteries in this video.
@@caramelzappa By the numbers the Makita should do 4x more, but in real life usage a lot more. The XGT series are made to dynamically adjust power delivery to the tool, when you start using them you will soon notice that the 90wh battery (36v 2.5ah) will do more work than an 18v 5ah 90wh battery. Only with a permanent very heavy load will the consumption be fairly equal but then ohms law come into play, the higher the voltage the lower the current, and the lower the current the lower the transmission loss. You see this factor at play with 40v impact wrenches that are more powerful than their 18v near identical twins
I think this is one of the 40v Makita tools that's just a slightly upgraded version of the 18v. From watching the comparisons, it's the tools that were completely redesigned for 40v that have been really impressive. Although all of the top impacts are already snapping adapters, so there's not much benefit to more power at this point.

Yeah, impact drivers are limited by 6.3mm bits,kinda no point to put more power into it than a bit can handle (the best bits and adapters ,not crap ones) . Impact Wrenches are another story and the new makita xgt one is brutal
@b gg not true. You have to look at the max amperage per cell. With higher voltages you can use cells that have more mah but less max amp discharge . The 20v batteries often use all the amps they can get , at 40v you need 50% the amperage of a 20v system. So the 40v system is a bypass to the max amp drag from the cells. You need a series motor in a drill to reach max discharge of a 40v battery pack . Thats why the new redisigned drill and 1/2impact wrench are destroying the competion....

It looks like the DeWalt was a little better (Makita fan here) so my only question is what about weight and ergonomics, which one feels better using it? I started out with DeWalt and they served me well, when I switched to Makita I found the hours I was using my impact driver was just more comfortable.

As a daily user of my 18V Makita impact, and my dad uses a Dewalt impact, there are differences that no one addresses in reviews. Trigger control. The Dewalt has more “power” and speed than my Makita, but my Makita gets more done in the day because I can feather the trigger. Doing work with vinyl, if the bit jumps out of the fastener it makes a huge divot in the vinyl. The Dewalt is NOT a good choice if you are doing any screw driving that requires less than full full trigger. Both the Dewalt and Makita impacts are great tools, but Dewalt lacks control ability.
Day one Makita XGT 40v impact driver still going strong and long.
Haven’t used another impact driver since.

I’m stoked I picked up that 850, at first I wasn’t really diggin it but after seeing what it can do with those new lithiums…. Damnnnnn she pushin big numbers. I’d almost say she’s pushin 8ah numbers which is just crazyyyy but I’m happy cuz after an 8hr day using ur impact all day being more compact without evening losing a bit of power is what I really needed. My triple hammer still is my favorite impact driver overall but this one is def a close second. Great vid bro!

The reality for me is that basically any major brand drill is going to get the job done these days. For driving screws, 40v isn't going to give you some huge advantage over 20v. The drill is going to use the same amount of watts, whcih the 20v is capable of providing.
The advantage of the 40v makita is that it uses the same batteries as the other 40v makita tools that you presumably need or already have. The advantage of the dewalt is that if you wanted to use similarly higher voltage tools the flexvolt means you don't have to buy a 60v drill to use the battery for both tools.
But as drivers alone, they're gonna basically be the same.
I believe Makita made the XGT to reach higher power for equipment style tools. They are building out that lineup to be able to get a contractor on one battery system to everything from 1/4" impact drivers up to things like cordless 2" roto-hammers, 28lb breakers, 10 1/4" circ saws etc. Will Dewalt have those types of tools with the power stack? Also running 1 or 10 screws doesn't seem to be a very good test other than a drag race style of test. Need to put them through the ringer and do equal watt hours and see which does more fasteners.

After seeing these tests from everyone and testing the new tools as well, it’s exciting to see what will come down the pipeline from other brands next year, and Milwaukee…..don’t mind a stacked pack of batteries, but if change the 18v/12v platform & contacts to something else where EVERYONES Tools won’t be compatible, ain’t no one gonna be happy. DeWalt did a good thing with these power stack batteries and making them compatible with all their 20v tools👍🏻👍🏻

Never got into Makita for power, got into the line because they are comfortable, take abuse last long, and have all the power you need. I left DeWalt because it seems they sacrifice build quality and tool life for power
The powerstack is lipo and the 40v is li-ion. Its apples and oranges. The Lipo has a higher c-rating which means it will always deliver more power than a li-ion. An analogy: Li-ion is using a straw to deliver power, Lipo is using a firehose. Faster recharge and Discharge, so you will have to put it on the charger way more often but it will be ready to go in 1/4 the time.
In this case you dont have any comparison with dewalt so it means the same. Still best baterry in market
DEfinitely not apples and oranges comparison! LiPo and LiIon use both Lithium based and use the same approach to deliver current. Also a single cell LiPo has the same voltage at rest / charged as a single cell LiIon (3.6 to 4.2V). The main difference is the electrolyte material.
Here's what I think gets lost on a lot of people, but it's a lesson I learned when I used to sell audio components when I was young. The formula for wattage is current (amps) x voltage (volts) = wattage. Companies like Sony would come out with a 100 Watt receiver, for example, but a Harman Kardon receiver rated at 70 watts was much more powerful. How could this be? Easy. Volts are like a garden hose, and current is analogous to the water that flows through it. Certainly a firehose can deliver more water (current) than a garden hose, but what if you have two hoses that are ten foot and 15 foot wide in diameter respectively? Many tools are not designed to use 40 volts or 60 volts (or more if you double up on batteries). What matters is how much current the tools are using. Manufacturer can make their equipment seem more powerful by upping the voltage rating but in all actuality they could use less current. Just like Sony, Makita, DeWalt, and others have used the same trickery.

If I had either platform I would stick to it, not jump ship. It looks like the DeWalt is light weight & if using it for along time, your wrist wouldn’t be sore compared the heavy weight. I have a Metabo with 36V/18V 4An battery, it doesn’t take long for my wrist to start hurting. Thanks for the information and making me 😀.👍

Not a Dewalt guy really but I like the Dewalt it’s compatible with the current system I like the loyalty Dewalt is showing to their base by not making them invest in a new platform. And honestly pound for pound the size Weight and cost investing into a new platform compared to the difference in performance doesn’t justify it. If you run Makita and that’s your tool you’re going to go for it if you’re completely indifferent and looking to invest into a platform I don’t see somebody grabbing the Makita.

DeWalt is showing innovation without taking away from their core clients kind of what they did with the 18 volt line they made an adapter and so that you can use the 20 volt so if you still have those tools you can use this battery as long as you have that adapter just make sure it's xr line the motors in those Nicad tools are on beast mode 📳 especially if you have that three speed dc925 for old school that's got a lot of chooch
I have the 925. Still a great tool! The backwards compatibility is one of the reasons I have stuck with DeWalt.
Also, AFAIK, Dewalt doesn't have a BS BMS brick-function, so you can actually fix or upgrade your battery packs.
Would love to use that powerstack on the dcf840. Would prolly have won every test. Either way i still like the atomic i have both. I use them daily and i like having 2 impacts anyways so i dont have to switch bits as much lol. Overkill i guess but i love tools so idc. Only thing is the 840 definitely heats up faster then the atomic with repetitive work so im giving it a break more. So with that said if i was going to have just 1 i would choose the atomic

Stay with the 887 unless you absolutely need to compactness of the 850.
Performance wise the 887 still wins.
I'm also waiting for the next XR impact driver from DeWalt to see if it can beat the Milwaukee gen 3, the Flex or the Kobalt XTR.

Stick with the XR. I did “upgrade” and I went thru two dcf850 in month in a half. it is a nice tool but it won’t last that long if you use it for heavy duty tasks at commercial projects. that’s what happened to my crew. We even didn’t went back to 887 but to Milwaukee Gen 3 impact 🤷🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤣

Bought Makita in 2006. 1.5ah batteries. Still as good as new 17 years later. This year, I’ve heard Milwaukee is on top, but opinions change every year…

I like my Makita for battery tools. Always and always will. But the Dewalt planners and table saws are better than Makita in my opinion.

I honestly don’t understand the cheating part. But both of the drills seem really close. But the dewalt definitely looked alittle faster.
It’s all about the amps not voltage….. the stack battery is a lipo and is able to deliver the amps better than a normal cells, this is the reason why telsa went tabless to increase the flow of electrons.
DeWalt is the only option with their flexvolt machines and batteries that can be used on all their 18/20v - 54/60v tools
Im a DeWalt guy now. I switched from Makita. I’m happy with my Decision. Now I’m waiting for those PowerStack Batteries.
I like'em both, I have been using dewalt for over 10 years. I dont care about the smaller size as much. Im more interested in how long that little power stack last for and can it go in saws? It says it will last, but I want to see it.
Be skeptical. If it’s anything similar to the chemistry of RC Lipos, running it hard on a job site is going to give it half the life of a normal battery with cylindrical cells.
My main concern is the instability of Lipos. If I’m using a Lipo I’m charging it with a programmable charger not some tool brand charger that just pumps current in the battery to try to charge it as fast as possible. Sometimes charging smaller batteries much faster than they should be.
Now the regular chargers are fine but the fast Milwaukee charger is insanely fast to the point where you need to do the math on which of your packs should be safe to charge in a rapid charger.

Well Clint, Ill say the new powerstack Battery looks to be pretty impressive for power to weight ratio. Im a Dewalt platform guy that uses 885s professionally all day long with 4ah batteries for building outdoor structures installing a lot of Torx 40 5/16" lag fasteners that range up to 6" long. I need decent power and longevity out of my batteries and if this new power stack tech can give me the performance of my 4ah batts while lightening up the impact that will be awesome for all day use for sure. Now I love my Dewalt stuff for its proven durability and performance on the job but im certianly not going to say Dewalt tools are better then Makita tools. Ill just say they get the job done for me and dont hurt the bank account as much as Makita tools would. I woulnt deny salivating over some shweet shweet Makita tools every now and then though

18v 1.5-5ah batteries are all we need for light construction hand tools. Any modern 18v impact with an extra on the charger will sink 3" screws all day. Makita needs to use this 40v platform to compete with the sawstop.

You are confusing power with energy. 40V battery gives you better efficiency when extracting the energy from that battery, but it does not give you a more powerful motor or transmission.
Most people do not understand it all.

Not much point in a 40v if theyre using the same guts as the 20volts. Key difference will be the run time and ability to run bigger tools with a smaller battery. Currently milwaukee needs a 12amp battery to run theyre big saws while the makita only needs a 4.

My 36v makita tools have plenty of power and last forever. 40v has comparable power, but doesn’t last very long. I’d rather use the 36v system, but try as I might, I couldn’t get the 36v track saw and went with the 40v.

How about a mini blower run time test.
I personally don’t like big bulky tools so unless I need the power of m18 I run mainly m12 fuel and everybody kept going on about the 18-20v subcompact but the batteries that come with those suck so when you put on a bigger ah battery to truly beat m12 fuel you lose a lot of the compactness but know cause of power stack it’s going punches with huge tools with huge batteries and has me thinking maybe I might need to get some compact and atomic dewalt with these power stack batteries cause of how light and compact they remain
Can't wait for Dewalt to come out with Flexvolt Powerstack at 6ah and 9ah level, hopefully they will be more compact than current versions. Their weight and size is their only downside in my book.

These new Power Stack batteries are what everyone should be talking about, because if they prove safe and reliable, and they can be produced with higher Ah ratings, which I believe they can, it WILL be an Industry changer! They seem to act a little like the NiMh batteries of yore, in a way, and like a turbo charged version of Li Ion in another?
Now I’m a Makita guy, as well as a DeWalt user. But this really irritates me since for four years the Makita techs and reps have told me they wouldn’t produce a throng greater than a 6.0 18 volt battery, due to their fast charge times, and the fact the typical user, “ doesn’t want to be carrying around a tool with a big and heavy battery.” And now they release this 40 Volt line, and stick that huge arse battery on a small impact! REALLY Makita ???
I just used my XDT14 (?) three speed impact, and loved the ability to run it slow, and be able to get up into a confined space. Light, smooth, and easy on the arm and wrist, can be important on a full day on the jobsite! My 2 cents...
