I just finished watching Ms. Lombard in the movie Twentieth Century. She was a favorite of my late mother. I went to TH-cam hoping to find the crash site. I'd seen photos before and old b/w grainy new reels. This made it more real to me. Dang, what rugged and desolate terrain. You guys went to a lot of trouble to make this video! I'd read once that the recovery team had to find enough horses and mules to be able to bring down the victims. I watched another video from people that were not as respectful as y'all are. It was the place where 22 people lost their lives, not some fun destination. Anyway, thank you.
Thanks so much for watching and glad you enjoyed. Yeah it’s a historical sight and I always respect that. I know several people have always wanted to visit the place so this is on way to do it without the dangers.
It is truly astounding how the recovery team was able to get to that site in the snow and ice. Thanks for taking that dangerous hike. Very sad ending for all onboard.
It took the recovery team over 14 hours to get there. These men actually crawled on hands & knees at times.What an awful sight that had to have been. How any of them ever slept again is beyond me. Everything crushed & burned. There wasn’t much left of any of the victims. I don’t know if I believe what they did say was her remains was really so. Since Clark Gable stated he would not leave without her Eddie Mannix (MGM Vice President) went to the crash sight himself & identified her charred remains. Eddie had a lot of power back in the day & if he said it was Carole no one would have argued. The plane’s alarm systems were off you know. As the military was concerned about enemy sabotage. These would have alerted the pilots that they had veered off course. Actually by 80 feet was all. Enough though. The plane was cruising at over 180 per hour & hit head on. One of the first recovery volunteers to reach the crash sight was Rex Bell, a B movie cowboy actor & estranged hubby of Clara Bow.
Thank you for that difficult climb to film that difficult to reach crash site. Makes me appreciate what a heroic effort it would have been back then to go to the crash site to investigate. Sad bit of information about the pilot taking the wrong route. If only they'd stuck to the slower but safer train ride home to California.
Can you imagine all the men climbing up there to recover bodies, belongings, and to investigate? Then they had to climb to the peak with the bodies so they could be taken to their families. All of that without modern equipment. It would be exhausting.
There is no doubt that being in a plane which slams into a mountain like that in the middle of the night is not a survivable event. So sad for all who lost their lives that night.
Some guy found her wedding ring, her mothers watch, ear rings and other artifacts from her. I saw it on jordan the lions channel. It's very interesting but I couldn't help but think this should go to a relative if possible ? When they found her her left arm was missing, with her wedding ring, she was badly burned and was identified by a small patch of blonde hair and a partially burned itinerary that was found under her. As tragic as that was, she sold 2 million dollars in war bonds at one event, there were alot of other people killed on that flight including one of Clark Gables best friends. It's no wonder that day haunted him until he died.
I loved the Drone shot going into the Cliff face, I always wondered where on that Cliff face crash occurred. That shot definitely gave us a feel for what happened

Using your Drone footage as a reference I can see where it made impact but not necessarily how it made impact. Great job on the video, it's probably the best out there
They do have one in the town of Good springs which is where Clark Gable remained until they recovered his wife. It's called the Pioneer Saloon, and there is a nice memorial there from it.

I very recently watched another video that explained a highly probable cause for the Lombard plane crash. The pilot usually would refuel in nearby Boulder City. But at the hour of night they were approaching, that small airport was shut down with no runway lights. So the only other option was Vegas. The takeoff directly from Vegas was into the mountains. The pilot dud not reset his directional heading from his Boulder City takeoff which would have missed the mountains. Instead, being on the Vegas direction, they hit the mountains. Would have been a simple fix of resetting his flight path but probably just didn't think about it, being in a rush to get back to Burbank Airport.
the circumstances of this flight sound a lot like the flight of Buddy Holly...and the Lynyrd Skynyrd flight...if someone has a bad feeling about getting on a plane, maybe they should follow their instincts..regardless of whatever consequences it may bring...
I guess they were supposed to land in Boulder City to refuel but it was dark so they landed in Las Vegas. When they took off they used the heading of 218 normally that was used out of Boulder City to join the airway. Out of Vegas the heading was supposed to be 208 to join which would have put them south of the mountain. But the 218 put them right in the mountain.
Hello friends! Thanks for the video. I still like Lombard's and Gable's work a lot. I read articles and documents , watched videos regarding to plane crash on January 16th 1942. I think Germans caused this crash because the plan was changed many times and militaries on board also. Carole used her influence to get cash against nazi army. I think the American government never will let us know that was a sabotage or a German attack in he USA. Unfortunately, Gable suffered a lot because his beloved wife's death. Unfortunately, many people died tragically including Carole's mother. People who lived near Potossi on that night saw a light and listened/heard to a sound of an explosion and then the airplane crash. I think were German spies during the second world war. Gable will be always in my heart. Carole had superstition and perhaps was something religious also, her age 33, flight 3. Could you try to check this plane docs and also get her necropsia??
I found this video very interesting. I’m very surprised how much debris is still there. Makes one appreciate how fleeting life is. I should try to remember how fleeting and precious life is.
I know you took extra time to add the music. I'd respectfully recommend not doing that. It's much more interesting (in my opinion) to hear the regular ambient sounds, and the music that you chose is, for me, quite grating.
Music is rarely a good thing to add to a video, even if it seems like a good idea when you're making it. I personally had to quickly mute the volume at the beginning of the video because of the loud music when it started(didn't want to wake anyone), then had to turn it up all the way to hear the narration...I wish TH-cam had some way of automatically equalizing the audio on all videos when they are uploaded...too loud parts and too quiet parts on the same video is a common problem on TH-cam...music is almost always too loud...
Recovery must have been brutal. I find it interesting that FAA didn’t remove the pieces for reconstruction as is usually the case with plane crashes. Even small aircraft. Thank you for the video.
@@stevelamperta865 , the shape of the cylinders doesn't look like anything I've seen on a DC'3 / C-47 ? Maybe it's an earlier engine than the planes I've been exposed to in 1962 -1989 ? Even got to fly one once. That was interesting. Speed is not one of it's attributes, but it will carry 45 skydivers. The problem with these old engines is that nobody produces 130 Octain aviation gasoline anymore, so getting maximum designed power isn't possible without risking engine damage from pre-ignition (knocking).
Very interesting video. There is a memorial setup at a bar about 7 miles from the crash site where Clark Gable stayed while waiting for the rescue teams to recover his wife. It's in the town of Good springs called the Pioneer Saloon. Clark refused to leave until they found her. There are burn marks from him smoking cigars on the bar he was sitting at. Have you done any research on the TWA/United collision over the Grand Canyon in the 1950's? There is still alot of wreckage from both planes in the canyon. Might be worth a trip and hike to check it out! Look up United flight 718. I have always wanted to go to that site.

It was too dangerous for civilians to go up that mountain in the snow and ice. They had a heck of a time getting all the bodies down because it was so hazardous which is why it was cleaned up properly.
Safety beacons meant to direct flight traffic were blacked out due fears of a possible Japanese attack. The Japanese never had strategic capabilities to target in that area. It cost the lives of many people instead.
I’ve gotten to old for such rugged slopes. My knee would go out. But I once was as a mountain goat. Sad sight to see but it was quick no prolonged suffering.

Alot of the larger pieces were melted down for the war efforts a few months after the crash. From what I understand they brought a smelter up there and went to work on getting the larger pieces melted down.

She used her movie star clout to bump three soldiers off the plane to get home to Clark. We have to understand they lived in a different time & place. Clark was the king & the young & gorgeous women trying to take a short cut up that starry climb to stardom by allowing themselves to be seduced by major stars was legionary. Carole knew he was unfaithful when she married him & to her this was a so what. The luscious Lana though she saw as a real threat.

I was making arrangements to have some of the more prominent items on display at the Hollywood Museum, but the Covid has shut down most if not all museums in California for now. I’m now working on a virtual type museum that would make these items available to view on the internet.

That rusty engine shown at about 6:30 isn't from a DC-3. Apparently another plane, probably a single engine, also crashed at that spot.

I know they used twin wasp pratt an whitney engines , but I've seen other engines stuffed into them planes too.

A lot of it got cut up after the crash and got packed out by Mules. But yeah it’s crazy to be up there seeing it all and what happen

I was making arrangements to have some of the more prominent items on display at the Hollywood Museum, but the Covid has shut down most if not all museums in California for now. I’m now working on a virtual type museum that would make these items available to view on the internet.

I find it unbelievable that this plane crash site was not cleaned up when the accident happened.
I'd at least wear a helmet and elbow pads.
This is kinda ghoulish. Why would anyone want to go to the crash site. This is just my humble opinion. Agree or disagree is certainly your choice but this is just how I feel.
