    Many used APBT/Amstaff as a cross. Just a lot selected the white and kept the colors hidden. The more you research the more you will see this. Then certain breeders focused on the colors.

    I was under the impression that JEL John Litchard bred Boudreaux's Zydeco Dancer to Felony. If I remember this created dogs like Jedi and Karol Jean. I also believe Onyx was owned by a guy named Jeff. Fellow up in Rock Island Steve has a lot of this information. I actually had Karol Jean on my yard for a short time. Seems Like Don had a dog named Crow that was a black AB? The old True Grit AB board had all of this information on it. Also a fellow named Scott Tobin in PA would have all of this information. He had the the True Grit board several long topics on this subject.

    • @prideofthesouthlandkennels
      @prideofthesouthlandkennels  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea Zydeco Dancer was Jedi’s Dam for sure. Maybe you’re right about JEL doing that breeding, this is the part that confused me most but I do know that Ray Weaver did introduce Boudreaux dogs to his American Bulldogs and he said he “bred” Jedi and registered him as Weaver’s Onyx’s Newjack which made me believe he produced him. Also, Don mentioned Ray bring the first one doing this cross if I remember and heard him correctly. Thanks for the insight my friend

    I have always wondered why do purebred dogs have such long ass names like why can't it just be spot for example instead of the long 3/4 names

    • @amarxxx8878
      @amarxxx8878 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most people still give their dogs call names bc registered names can be long. This is the “spot” concept you mentioned.
      Breeders give uniquely registered names for different reasons.
      The way to read the names is
      Who owns it/name of dog/who bred it (if applicable)
      RK’s Swiftkill of Alan Scott.
      Ruff knuckle is my kennel.
      Swiftkill
      Alan produced her
      A dog I produced.

    Welp... there goes the lie that the WAY the American Bully was created was with JUST the American Pit Bull Terrier & American Staffordshire Terrier when up to 10 different breeds were used... INCLUDING the American Bulldog... when Matthews was ALREADY doing it.

      Actually watching an interview right now with Dave Wilson and Zeb pits about how all of this started with the American Bully. He claims that it did start with Amstaff and UKC pit bulls. We all know now that’s not the case but maybe in the beginning he held true to his word. I’ve been thinking of getting back into American Bullies but I’m doing extensive research and the actual history and pedigrees of these dogs. Not sure what the comment about Don Matthews has to do with the American Bullies though 🤷‍♂️. I enjoy the comments you leave, you go into detail on a lot of them and then give explanations. Thank you for all of the conversations and thank you for watching and commenting on my videos. I really appreciate it.

    • @hotepkennels
      @hotepkennels 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@prideofthesouthlandkennels I've heard he admitted in older interviews to using Mastiff in the beginning... but my point about Don Matthews is that he bred ABPTs with American Bulldogs... and a dog in my pedigree known as Wannabe-A-Wopper is an American Bulldog crossed with APBT. Same dog back in Hulk's pedigree. So XL American Bullies of CERTAIN bloods are bred using 2 of the SAME breeds that Don Matthews used. Since Hulk stirred up all of this controversy... the ADBA has MADE UP a breed out of thin air... and classified those dogs as Working Pit Bulldogs. #LetTHATSinkIn 🤔

    They used these game dog blood lines thst included the old Colby bloodlines to cross with to get the bully lines but the old game lines, jerp,carver,Mayfield, boudreux lives. I have apbt dogs and bully dogs with am staff blood and staffordshire bloodlines and I trace each dogs line back to the year 1856 when they came over from Europe, Ireland, Spain. All these lines share these lines some where down the line if you trace the dna.

    Very interesting stuff but I’m my opinion you’re missing points and names of the players who bred the black bulldogs! Jel x weaver weren’t the only ones to do color they were just one of the few successful breeders! There were programs that used black labs and that didn’t come out well! Any who if youre on Facebook the players of those days are there. This is a discussion to till this day!

      I’ve heard other names too such as James Ellerbe but most people seem to think it’s a rumor. I’ve talked to several people that’s involved with the breed and when you mention the black Bulldog they point towards Mr. Matthews. When I asked him about it he gave me the information provided in the video. I’m sure their are others but every true black Bulldog I’ve seen is always traced back to JEL dogs. I’m not say there are not others out there. Not sure why anyone would think a black lab would be a good cross to a Bulldog. I can see game dogs and staffs but not a lab 🤦🏻‍♂️. Thanks for the comment and information provided . I’m not on Facebook but who are some of the other names?

    • @Dkelley510
      @Dkelley510 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well you talked to don Mathews, and what he says is what he says but others that were there stated he had his dog(s) soMe were from black champs that were bred down from JEL some were projects done with a Cheryl Devine to my knowledge. The dogs of color we see today basically go back to JEL program on the mainstream circuit! There are other lines with no JEL blood but they are not mainstream

      @@prideofthesouthlandkennels also what you find in this breed is a lot false claim to fame and hung papers. the black bulldog or color bulldogs are not praised by many in the bulldog world, some believe the cross wasnt needed some believe it ruins the bulldog and takes away from the dog being a bulldog! as for me i like them i just like certain lines and traits!

    During the “Great Depression of the 1930’s” the American Kennel Club added American Pit Bull Terriers to their registry under the name of Staffordshire Terriers. With this new name for the breed, they needed a standard. After visiting a few kennels, a committee headed by Wilfred T. Brandon chose Colby’s Primo as a standard for the breed."
    I think much of the confusion is due to the fact that APBT is not an official breed yet many assume it is.
    You hit it spot on, until someone breeds them consistently for how many years it takes until they have a large and strong genetic profile to be considered a true breed, this topic will aways be a debate.

      @Stay at Home Cichlid Mom - I’m sorry but I have to strongly disagree. The American Pit Bull Terrier is 100% a breed. Just because the American Kennel Club doesn’t recognize it doesn’t mean it’s not a breed. They recognize the American Staffordshire Terrier and Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The Amstaff is not the same as the American Pit Bull Terrier anymore, back then yes but not anymore. The phenotype and genetic pool has been altered too much to call it the same nowadays. I’m not sure why you would think the American Pit Bull Terrier is not a breed when it’s been a huge part of American History.

      @@prideofthesouthlandkennels They are identified as a breed by a standard (looks, temperament ect) but I'm speaking genetically.
      I breed fish and when it comes to breeding anything there's controversy regarding breeding, line breeding, inbreeding, hybrids ect. I can take 2 of the same species of fish and line breed it for certain traits. Size, color ect. Which many do and what they end up with oftentimes is something that looks completely different than its wild cousins (which is a huge topic of disagreement regarding this practice because it questions on the preservation of the species but genetically speaking, DNA, it still is not a hybrid) On the otherhand I can take 2 different species of fish breed them and end up with 100 fry, which 40 look exactly like one species, 40 look exactly like the other species and 20 that look like the intended hybrid I'm trying to produce.(which i personally do not practice or believe is right) As a breeder it is my responsibility to cull the 80 and properly breed them until the hybrid is able to breed true. Unfortunately there's to many that do not do this. What we end up with is fish that infiltrates the hobby that are visually identified as a certain species but if they where to be genetically tested, it would show that they are actually a hybrid (mixed)
      My point wasn't to say that APBT doesn't exist, they do, they are a huge part of history and continue to be but unfortunately the recognition of the breed is still heavily only done through visualization which is fine but when so many argue over whether or not a dog is a "True APBT" only through history standard, which IMO is fine but they also have to realize, that is not a guarantee. There have been and continue to do extensive studies and testing where they take groups that have been identified as APBT and the percentage that come back as correctly identified is ridiculously low. Which my point again wasn't to say they don't exist because they do, but I would think that for the integrity of the breed and for all the people that love the breed, more breeders would produce strong genetic lines through breeding programs. Backyard breeding although is a HUGE part of the history and still continues to be, unfortunately when it comes down to it, it does very little forbkeeping the integrity of the breed.
      Amstaff have been bred into something completely different through breed standards however they where originally bred from 2 colby pitbulls and since they where, a purebred Amstaff can technically be back bred which can make the already confusing genetics topic even more so.
      Long story short, its not that I do not think they are a breed, but I see many discussions and people fighting over what is a "True APBT" what color is and is not (when the UKC who recognizes the breed and states that the only unacceptable color is Merle) will never end, then again maybe as much as people get downright mad about it, deep down it is also apart of the history behind the breed. The secrecy of who did what to produce champions.
      I hope that made some sense. Genetics, breeding ect is never easy, regardless of what it is your breeding can become very confusing very quickly. Lol.

    • @prideofthesouthlandkennels
      @prideofthesouthlandkennels  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yea I understand what you’re saying there and I agree. The controversy is that too many people don’t know what the true APBT is. People have allowed too many other breeds to be bred into the so called “pit bull” such as the UKC. However ADBA is the only true APBT registry if you ask me and breeders who have been around for a long time can indeed mate two dogs together that breed true time and time again. The culling process sadly doesn’t exist anymore because society’s views on it and also people that just want to sell dogs. You seem very knowledgeable on the topic. Thank you for sharing your view points.
