For your one year anniversary I’m rewatching this for I don’t know how many times now, but It never gets old to me Tay! The birth of a genius chainsaw carver in the works here. This won’t be the last time I replay this. Your roots as a carver began here with just the basics of carving tools. You’ve come a long way in just a year cutie! AMAZING!!! 💛
I love how I decided to drop everything and do this full time after my 5th carving, witch is this one right here! It worked out, but sometimes I question my sanity 😂 Wish I kept this one to look back on!

@@TayMarie23 yes, a jamhorse is on my list. That, and a saw with a dime bar. Bought a stihl 180 c b e, two weeks ago. Love it! Never used a saw or carved anything before. At 63, I'm invested in this. Due to recent health issues I'm on SSI and hope to generate some extra income. I encourage you to do so, this hobby is like no other!! The carving community is absolutely wonderful too! Just make sure you get some chainsaw chaps and safety gear before your start anything! 🙂
Hii! Thank you for the kind words! I don’t use that clear coat anymore, but it was a transparent lightly tinted fence stain and weather-proofer! I recently switched over to all oil based products for my carvings, but I was using fence and deck stains prior to that! Honestly, they were working great and there is no specific reason I changed to oil other than just listening to some of the advice I have been given from other carvers :) I now use Australian timber oil and TWP 1500 for all of my carvings (in various colors) both of which I would recommend for ANY wood project, fence, or deck - they are both AMAZING!
I can't believe you just started to caver! You do such a great job carving. I love the owl you did and watching you care that bear you are very talented! Can't wait to see your next video!
Thank you so much Peter! Once this Christmas rush of orders slows down I’ll be a lot more consistent about getting videos out! I just haven’t had the time to sit up at my desk and edit the backlog of footage I have! Can’t complain though, being busy is good haha! Keep eyes out for a video release tomorrow 😉
This was my first ever carving video (and my 5th ever carving) definitely check out some of my newer stuff sometime! I use mostly gas saws now with many different bars, at the time of this video I only owned one little electric saw with the stock bar. I just taught myself over the past year! Watched a video on chainsaw safety and then just practiced practiced practiced! To start you don’t need anything fancy! Any saw with a stock bar will work to teach you the basics of carving!
I saw this video and am getting ready to start carving myself. Great work! One question I have is, approximately what is the size of the log you used to carve this bear?
This was my first ever carving video 💕 This was probably a 14-16” diameter log about 16-18” tall! I hope you enjoy this amazing art form! I would recommend starting with trees, they are a great way to learn the basic cuts before jumping into a bear! Bears are so fun though!
There is no way to stop cracking, we can only try our best to limit it. Every carving will crack eventually, that’s a guarantee! The best ways to prevent cracks is to use a high quality timber oil and try to use quartered or halfed logs when possible. When you remove the pith from the carving you get a lots less cracking. This isn’t really possible with larger carvings, but really helps with cracking on smaller carvings! Certain wood types crack more then others as well!
@@TayMarie23 I am In Pennsylvania I guess I might have to take a few days to plan a trip, but I am going to the NYS Woodsman fair next week. Maybe you will be carving there
Can you run a dime tip on an electric saw? I have heard it’s not good because electric only runs at full throttle and you shouldn’t run a dime tip at full throttle? But I honestly know nothing, learning as I go lol! I was looking at getting a quarter tip so I don’t have to change the sprocket, but I’m definitely open to suggestions!
Aww I appreciate that, also Jenna is awesome!! You will have to check out my newer stuff sometime, this was only my 5th time using a chainsaw! I have come a long way since then :)
Awesome work, I'm new to this too and love it, I've been using chainsaw, dremel flexshat and Wen makes a great cheap dremel up to 35000 rpm, it was 24.99 and has lasted 3-4 times longer than dremel brand js, a cheap die grinder for really digging out wood with a kutzall tear drop burr 1/4 for the die grinder and a 1/8 for the dremel, I use those two burrs more than any others but if you decide to get some I can show ya what I got that's working great right now, your a natural BTW, I've only made a bear and owl with the chainsaw last fall then winter hit so only doingng power tools inside 😅 where its been warm, can't wait for spring weather to get out there chainsaw carving this week, also check out Jordy Johnson carving fusion and Ryan Cook, just carve rob, I've been learning tons watchingng them guys, Carve deep! Just make sure you aren’t being ripped off for you hard work, but you know that! Sorry about your channel and fb, Uhg that’s awful! I would love to see how your bigfoot is turning out!
Your neeest subscribers. Are you really new to chainsaw carving at this point? You definitely have a gift. Saw another video of yours a year later that was amazing! I’m a woodworker and was thinking of advancing skill set to carving. I’d like to do a simple project like a fire hydrant. Looking forward to what you do next!
I feel like we are always beginners, regardless of what stage we are at! This is a hobby where you constantly learn new things, it never ends! I bet you most master carvers will tell you they still learn things on the daily doing this! This is a wonderful hobby/job, it engages and exercises both the mind and the body! 😁
No wayyyy! I have watched so many of your videos, you are a huge inspiration of mine! AND DEFINITELY KEEP THE VIDEO'S COMING.❤❤❤❤❤❤
Awww thank you for this comment! I started last August so we are definitely in a similar boat! I have been really happy with my progress this year, make sure you check out my newer stuff 😉
@@daffyduck8244 I find that it's more difficult to get the bar to sit/mount right with the electric chainsaws due to them often having tool-less tensioning systems. They can be a little clunky until you get use to it. My Oregon, Greenworks, and Sthil all mount differently. I prefer the tooled tension when possible, bar mounts easier with less adjusting. Remember to always pull the nose of your bar upwards while you do the last bit of tightening!
Haha thank you! I have improved so much since I released this video, every carving has taught me so much :) I’m really back logged on footage/videos but plan to get them all out once it gets colder! Wow can't believe you are just a beginner! There may be hope for me yet :) That looks as good as most I've seen for sale for $75 or better. Thanks for the vids! 👌

You are so inspiring, and naturally talented! I’m just learning chainsaw carving,, I have a bad back but refuse to give up. ✊🏽 Please keep up the amazing Werk!! 🙌🏽🔥🎨
That’s the plan 😉 Get yourself something like a jaw horse to carve on so you aren’t holding yourself in awkward positions, causing further back issues! Carving can be tough on the body, never be afraid to take breaks when needed! I take a week off here and there just to let my neck and back recoup! Those saws aren’t light either!!
@@TayMarie23 ~ thank you so much! Very wise advice,, I’m already laying on my back and lifting 20 pound weights to get my arms use to holding it for longer lengths. I Dremel carve standing up in my creation station 🙂 since sitting is an issue… Thanks again I appreciate it 🙏🏽💫
Well this is actually the first carving video I ever posted, this was my 5th carving. Prior to this bear I carved two little trees, a bear, an owl, and then this bear in the video. I think trees are a great starting place, then maybe owls, I find owls much easier then bears. I still find bears to be a good challenge! As for a saw, if you have one start with that! You don’t need anything special. I mean for the first 5ish months I only carve with a $90 electric saw and the 18” stock bar it came with. If you don’t have a saw I would recommend picking up a Stihl ms170 for $199 at your local dealership or ACE Hardware 😊
Thank you very much for the incite, I have a gas 16 inch, but think I prefer electric much quite, from what I have seen I your videos. Keep up the great work, I am trying to follow in sequence your videos
I can't believe this was one of your first carves,....and only a year ago?!!!Soooo cute! And to top it off, I've already seen the giant bear you carved. Your art just blows my mind, it's so beautiful, even your first carves! So, watching this,... Can I carve with just the stock bar and chain my saw came with? I have the Stihl MSA 70. Also, I do have a small 4" angle grinder, but I need to get the wrench(es) for it. I was thinking what to get for it,... probably start with sanding disks like you used here. Do you find you use it much? If so, do you have any favorite attachments?
At this point closer to a year and a half, but yet this was my 5th carving 🐻 You can definitely use the stock bar and chain, I carved this bear with an 18” stock bar. You might want a carving bar in the future but I would definitely start without one and learn the ropes first! And for the angle grinder, I now have a Saburrtooth sanding disc on it but yes you want to get your soon 40-120 grit flap sanding discs, you will use them a lot !
@@TayMarie23 Crazy how time flies! Look at all you're doing now,...so incredible! Thanks for the help.✨🙏🏻💖I will get a carving bar eventually. I want a Sand o flex and finger sander too,... But first things first. I'm always taking notes as I watch videos. Thanks for commenting back, I appreciate your time and experience.💯

I appreciate your kind words 💛 I would love to watch a carving contest, I hope to make it to one this coming year! Have a great day also! Cheers from Maine 😊
Hi from Montana🙂 I just bought a stihl 140 battery saw with carving bar. I’m just starting out. I’m recently divorced with time for a hobby now. I’m 65 and your never too old to learn something you’ve always wanted to do. Do you find you have much kickback with your electric saw? I’m a little scared about that😳 but I did order chaps and gloves and helmet!
Yay welcome to the newbie carving crew! I promise you will love this hobby, it’s very rewarding! To answer your question I have honestly never experienced kick back that was unexpected, it has only happened a few times when using the nose of the saw while detailing. I still don’t have a carving bar, definitely a priority after the holidays! I have only ever used Oregon’s low-profile stock chain, it’s very forgiving and rarely kicks but in return it cuts very slow. I plan to get a gas saw in the near future for blocking out and then using my corded and battery saws for shaping and fine tuning. I have experience more kick back with my battery saw but nothing crazy, it has a smaller bar so it’s a little more jumpy but very easy to correct and control! Just take it slow at first and your comfort will grow. Don’t be afraid but alway me mindful and respect the saw 😉

You are a true artist- that little bear turned out very nice.
Thank you so much Paul! I have learned so much with every carve, and I’m starting to see lots of improvement! I have a bunch of exciting videos lines up, just need to find the time to edit them to get them out for you guys!
Cheers from Maine :)
@@TayMarie23hi I do the same job where I can share you my pictures

I am really impressed at the awesome job you did for being a beginner. Awesome!
If this is you first time to the channel I encourage you to look at some of my newer stuff! I recently carved a 10’ life sized grizzly! Still a beginner but on to bigger and better things!
Woman you make this look so easy. I am going to get out my husbands tools and try this. love the little bear you carved. Thank you for sharing.
Do it girl! It’s the best work out and the most relaxing thing! You get so in the zone! As long as you keep all your limbs anything you carve is a success 💛😝
Nice work for a beginner, you should try using a half inch drill bit and a black marble for the eye, it gives it a very nice look
Thank you! I have come a long way since I filmed this video, you will have to check out some of my newer videos sometime! 🙂 I now use a chisel for my eyes, but I have seen people who use glass eyes and it always turns out beautiful!
Super cute.
Thank you! ☺️
Amazing! You are truly a natural. I love your little bear. Thank you for your inspiration.
You will have to check out some of my newer stuff sometime, I have come a long way since this cute little bear 😁 Always learning and growing! Thank you for the kind words!
I am going to watch your others. I subscribed! I have a chainsaw and would like to try something creative also.
I encourage you to do so, this hobby is like no other!! The carving community is absolutely wonderful too! Just make sure you get some chainsaw chaps and safety gear before your start anything! 🙂
What was the clear coat in the 5 gallon bucket you put on him? Amazing work your a natural.
Hii! Thank you for the kind words!
I don’t use that clear coat anymore, but it was a transparent lightly tinted fence stain and weather-proofer! I recently switched over to all oil based products for my carvings, but I was using fence and deck stains prior to that! Honestly, they were working great and there is no specific reason I changed to oil other than just listening to some of the advice I have been given from other carvers :)
I now use Australian timber oil and TWP 1500 for all of my carvings (in various colors) both of which I would recommend for ANY wood project, fence, or deck - they are both AMAZING!
Absolutely beautiful work Tay! I'll be back, would love to try this chainsaw carving myself.😊
Making a 10 foot grizzly right now, big step up from this peewee 😉 I hope you give it a try, it’s so therapeutic!
Hey Tay,
es macht mir immer wieder Spaß Dir zu zusehen, der Bär ist einfach super süß, ich liebe deine Bären, sie sind echt was ganz besonderes. :)
This was my first ever carving video and my 5th carving ever 💕 Wish I kept this one to remind me of how it all started!

That is the cutest bear ever!
It’s an oldie but goodie!
Great work! What do you use for the clear coat ? Thanks!
This was my 5th carving, have learned a LOT since! I either use TWP1500 series or SPAR Urethane to seal all of my carvings these days!
Wow, if you're just getting started, I can't wait to see what you do with some more practice, great work
I appreciate that! I have come a long way since this little bear bear 🐻☺️
So very nice you are blessed keep the viedos coming love them im learning so much

Nicely done. you have a great eye for this. Keep it going.
Just read your other comment on my polar bear carving! Nothing like seeing progress 😁
You are on the right track. Keep it up.
I have come a LONG way since this little carve haha, but thank you! 😁

so cool to see how far you've come in such a short time!!!
Thank you 🙌🏼 It’s been a lot of work!
It always is! lol
@@TayMarie23
So how did you learn how, I just learned how to operate my chainsaw, haven’t tried to carve yet, appears to me your using a standard size blade
Thank you!
How do you deal with cracks ? From the wood drying
Great carving, what state are you located? Maybe I might be close enough to stop and buy one of your carvings. Thank you Ron
Awww that’s very nice of you, I’m located in the great state of Maine!
@@TayMarie23 I am In Pennsylvania I guess I might have to take a few days to plan a trip, but I am going to the NYS Woodsman fair next week. Maybe you will be carving there
U go girl! Should invest in a 12 in dime tip carving bar & chain can do so much more detail will b well worth it 👍 Royal American Works
I do love seeing more of your video
Awesome job! I would love to be able to do something like that. Very impressive!
Thank you very much! ☺️
I need to purchase a couple of small bears.
You just let me know when 😉😂
Awesome job
Great job,i also do carvings very impressive for only doing five of them, keep it up.

Go's bless keep em coming
Hey hey! I actually have that exact Wen Dremel! I have a lot more tools then I had during the time of this video! This is how I make a living now so I have lots of goodies haha! @@TayMarie23 I seen your Bigfoot, love it, I went out back n started a Bigfoot yesterday, hoping to finish him today, ty for the Inspiration tho, felt great finally using the chainsaw again, so much faster lol after seeing this video I watched more of ya, amazing work, your super talented at this, I'm also making a job out of this, Crosscreek got ahold of me and asked if they could sell my stuff at their store, that was at Christmas time so been investing a lot into it, I had another fb n TH-cam with all my stuff but got hacked n lost it all so I need a new channel, using a family members ATM, I'm Jesse btw but anyway love your style, keep em coming, very inspirational 😊 ty
Hey Jesse! Congrats on landing a carving gig, that’s awesome! Do you wholesale your carvings or do you get a percentage after they sell? Thank you my friend! Improving a little each carve! Going to do another bear today! Might get a short out on it tomorrow :)
That looks awesome nice work. Was wondering what kind of wood you use.
I almost always use Eastern white pine ☺️
Your neeest subscribers. Are you really new to chainsaw carving at this point? You definitely have a gift. Saw another video of yours a year later that was amazing! I’m a woodworker and was thinking of advancing skill set to carving. I’d like to do a simple project like a fire hydrant. Looking forward to what you do next!

Great job love it
should the chainsaw bar jump around alot when first cutting?
I don’t believe so, I never notice my bar jumping! You might have a dull chain? What’s your set up?
@@TayMarie23 I have an electric 16 inch Black and Decker. I watch a video on how to put on the chainsaw so it looks right
@@daffyduck8244 I find that it's more difficult to get the bar to sit/mount right with the electric chainsaws due to them often having tool-less tensioning systems. They can be a little clunky until you get use to it. My Oregon, Greenworks, and Sthil all mount differently. I prefer the tooled tension when possible, bar mounts easier with less adjusting. Remember to always pull the nose of your bar upwards while you do the last bit of tightening!
💯 Damn, you’re coming out of the gate at a high level! Great work(s)!
Haha thank you! I have improved so much since I released this video, every carving has taught me so much :) I’m really back logged on footage/videos but plan to get them all out once it gets colder! What kind of wood do you use? Pine I'm guessing
Cedar when I can get my hands on it but mostly Eastern White Pine

Awww thank your for the support and welcome to the crew! 😁💛
That owl is sick. Are you an arty person. What advise would you give to a not particularly arty person 😅. Ps love your work you've done so well I want your skills 😅😂😂
You are so inspiring, and naturally talented! I’m just learning chainsaw carving,, I have a bad back but refuse to give up. ✊🏽
Please keep up the amazing Werk!! 🙌🏽🔥🎨
That’s the plan 😉
Get yourself something like a jaw horse to carve on so you aren’t holding yourself in awkward positions, causing further back issues!
I Dremel carve standing up in my creation station 🙂 since sitting is an issue…
Thanks again I appreciate it 🙏🏽💫
What did you start with, what animal and what saw,I haven't started yet
Great job, I love the bear
Thank you ☺️ 💛
I can't believe this was one of your first carves,....and only a year ago?!!!Soooo cute!

So cute great job
Thank you ☺️
Hi from Montana🙂 I just bought a stihl 140 battery saw with carving bar.
