    People get their AFI Lifetime Achievement at the twilight of their careers. But Meryl after receiving it in 2004 gave us some of the best and most memorable performances, cementing her as not just a GOAT but also a certified MOVIE STAR with hits after hits, 8 more Oscar nominations, earning a whole new generation of fans which is something unheard of for actresses. After 2004 she gave us The Devil Wears Prada, Mamma Mia!, Doubt, Julie and Julia, It's Complicated, The Iron Lady, August Osage County, Florence Foster Jenkins, Into the Woods, The Post, Big Little Lies 2, Don't Look Up, Little Women, among others.
    Truly the greatest of all time!

      I remember at the end of her speech she said "I hope this isn't the end." And I also remember thinking - and fearing - the same thing. Who knew she'd have the most successful part of her career in the coming years! Wow.

      Remember BFF Tracey Ullman: "I don't know why you're getting all these awards now....you're only in your mid-50's, usually a wonderful time for most actresses (snort)." Hysterical. And unfortunately true for most actresses. But not Meryl!

    OMG I never made the connection that that was Meryl in Holocaust... I was a teenager in high school back then and to this day I clearly remember the effect that mini-series had on us and how we were all talking about it at school at the time. I couldn't even watch The Deer Hunter then, but was a huge fan of Coming Home so was thrilled with Jon Voight's win at the time until I finally saw De Nero's performance soooo many years later and was just floored!! I don’t know how I missed this! She’s my favorite actress. The range of roles and how different she is in them is amazing. You can play different characters but she really is different in them. She’s able to express different facets of her talent for different characters but also in the same role.

    One of my favorite actors of all time! I'm not sure I agree with her nomination in The Deer Hunter but perhaps it's because I didn't enjoy the movie too much. I did like all of the performances in it, though. The way I see it, when an actor wins a second Oscar, if the Academy is willing to acknowledge an actor with another trophy (Maggie Smith that year) it's because she was undeniably great or the other nominees were weak. I can't wait to see the next part of this series!! Keep up the great work.

    Hey man, just found your channel and I'm a huge fan. I also have a fascination for the Oscars, in particular all acting performances, and the art of performing on film. I've also studied acting Oscars and the like for years and I have a couple suggestions for future series on this channel. One suggestion is you could do a series on the purely comical acting performances that have been nominated over the years and what made them so special as to be recognized by the Academy (i.e. Robert Downey Jr. in "Tropic Thunder," Melissa McCarthy in "Bridesmaids," Marisa Tomei in "My Cousin Vinny," etc.) Another interesting series would be covering the 21 times a juvenile (younger than 18) has been nominated for an acting performance and the impressive significance of accomplishing such a feat as a child. Anyway, keep up the great work and I look forward to all your videos!

    Great video Brian. Looking forward to the future parts. I was 12 when I first became aware of Meryl Streep in Kramer. I thought her beauty was striking with that chiseled face and long blonde hair. She looked so urbane and sophisticated. It wasn’t until a few years later I saw Holocaust and TDH. I know she didn’t think much of either role. She has said about TDH it’s a man’s version of what a woman should be. I saw Julia back in the VHS days and I heard it was a blink and you’ll miss it type role so I kept my eyes peeled. She had such a spark and presence it’s no surprise her career became what it did. I’ll say she place third or fourth when she lost to Smith on her first Oscar go round. Cannon won the supporting globe. Stapleton had the overdue factor kicking in. I’m thinking she placed second. Cannon could’ve been third or fourth depending where Meryl placed. It’s a tossup.

    First came across Meryl at 9 years old in A Cry in The Dark and She Devil and couldn't believe the spectrum of acting taking place here; I believe she as with Bette Davis should have around 10 Oscars at this point those including The French Lieutenants Woman, Silkwood, Ironweed, A Cry In The Dark, Adaptation, Doubt and of course The Bridges Of Madison County…I also believe she should have been given an honorary statue for her work in Angels in America (yes I know it is a television serial and she won the Emmy and Golden Globe but what she did there playing Ethel Rosenberg deserved another fucking Oscar!). There’s not really much more that can be said for how transcendent her craft is among us and how it lights a path for anyone coming up behind her but oh how it deserves to be repeated time and time again! 💖👑🙌

    What I love about the Kramer vs Kramer win is that she got to write & ad lib the courtroom monologue. And if u listen to it, it's better than any writer could have done. The line: "I went from my father's house, to his house, and then I was overwhelmed, but I love my child." So many men running the movie & thankfully the director actually asked a woman what she thought the character would say. Looking forward to this series, especially if you can be a bit more objective. I don't recall Streep being a contender for The Deer Hunter. I think the nomination acknowledged her arrival. In fact, I suspect it was the just the opposite of your closing statement, "Little did they know..." I think it was understood that a major dramatic actress had arrived on the scene - remember, her stage career in NYC preceded her - and she would have multiple opportunities going forward to win an Oscar. I think what you could say at this point in her filmography is that, "Little did they know, in just a few years time, she would deliver a career-making, legendary performance against which all of her future performances (and those of others) would be measured for decades to come." That would be a fair statement. :)

    I love Meryl, particularly her earlier work, which, at this rate, for me, goes from 1977-1996. I wondered if she kept that attitude whether or not that would actually have served her good, because while she is an amazing, phenomenal actor, it's very hard to be recognized when Meryl is in the category with you. I also think she would have maintained a mystery of being so good at her job that only the performance should speak for itself. I feel that her attitude switch led to her believing she deserved the award each time she is nominated, when it's not entirely true. I believe she deserved two of her Oscars. The third one I don't believe she deserved.
    That being said, Meryl made such good entries into mainstream entertainment through theatre and through television, her talent was so sought after that when she finally got the nominated for Best Supporting Actress in The Deer Hunter, it was bound to happen. I feel the Academy wanted to see Meryl more in films rather than what they got, but Meryl was in and even in the glance of her, she was enough in the film to merit a Best Supporting.
    I just want to clarify that Meryl Streep is a phenomenal actor who deserves the recognition she has received by her peers. But, there is also a valid reason why Streep fatigue was real and why it lasted decades before Oscar #3, and why Oscar #3 did not help end Streep fatigue. I got over my own, but the kernel I cling to from this video is that Meryl was firmly against competition in the industry for valid reasons.

    • @lovelessshin3
      @lovelessshin3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But the thing is, it's not her fault that she's being nominated. Oscars just love her so much that she keeps getting nominated. Her 3rd Oscars I felt like was the "it's time" sentiment from being nominated so much through the years.

    • @outinsider
      @outinsider ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lovelessshin3 Oh, I know its not her fault. I am glad that the Oscars are rewarding other actresses in her age range now. And Katharine Hepburn always said: "They give you Oscars for the wrong movie." The Iron Lady was Meryl's wrong movie. I would have preferred Emma Thompson portray Margaret Thatcher. Emma could have improved the screenplay immensely had she had.

    • @lovelessshin3
      @lovelessshin3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@outinsider i definitely think she was rewarded for the great streak of films she produced from devil wears prada towards that year for iron lady. if we're thinking only iron lady i guess it's not totally deserved but with the body of work left unrewarded i guess she pretty much earned it. wc brings me to the point that this is annoying cause some of these actresses get roles of a lifetime only to lose oscars to someone that got robbed of oscars years back

    • @outinsider
      @outinsider ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lovelessshin3 But it's not like Meryl's been unrewarded. She got two in the late 70s/early 80s. It's not like people forgot about them. Those Oscars alone make for her longevity. Until 2018, it was a travesty that Frances McDormand didn't get another Oscar after Fargo. I was glad Meryl was somewhat out of contention so that Frances could take a deserved honor. There are many actresses in Meryl's age range who deserved recognition they received in the same nomination with her, and those who didn't get nominated who deserved one, let alone who was nominated who deserved to win. This is annoying because the Academy is SO image conscious that belated "it's time" Oscars make up for lost years, neglect to win previously, and career wins without Honorary Oscar distinction. It's very annoying.

    She was nominated and was one of 5 nominated for that whole year! That says a lot! Too much analysis about why she did not win for THE DEER HUNTER. Not necessary in my opinion.

    I know I’m alone here but I hate The Deer Hunter. 1978’s Coming Home is the true masterpiece in my opinion. I wish it got the praise and awards that Deer Hunter got.

    What were the races she had zero chance. And was just happy to be there. And what were a few gold trophies. I personally wanted to see her win..... Great video, but please work on that damn enunciation LOL

    Unpopular opinion: She's over hyped. I don't get why everyone loves her. Frances McDormand is better, but not as widely loved.
