'For Sephora' How To Play The Melody - LIVE Replay Gypsy Jazz Guitar Secrets Lesson
In this lesson you'll learn how to play the melody to the A section of 'For Sephora'
'For Sephora' is one of the most popular jam tunes in gypsy jazz and was written by gypsy jazz guitar master Stochelo Rosenberg.
The melody is really beautiful and this tune is a nice one to add to your repertoire.
As well as learning the melody try to hear how each phrase fits over the chord beneath it. For eg the first phrase of the melody highlights the minor 9 (F#) to give that smooth sound :-)
Each of the phrases of the melody also serves as a nice lick which you can use over chords when soloing over any other piece in jazz or gypsy jazz.
The sequence for the A section of 'For Sephora' is
Em/// Em/// Am/// Am///
B7/// B7/// Em/// B7///
The beginning of this progression is exactly the same as the sequence to 'Minor Swing' which is in Am. So the melody can work as a solo in 'Minor Swing' which is cool!
When you learn a new tune, especially this one take each phrase one at a time.
1. Learn the notes of the phrase out of time
2. Play the notes in time
3. Play it over and over again until it feels really comfortable

There’s this new song named Playing God that blew up to 3.5 million views in about 2 weeks.
It’s structured something like Em- C - B7, along with a few other chords.
It’s not exactly Gypsy, more like metal/classical played on a solid body nylon guitar.
It uses a lot of these minor sounds.
Certain parts of it remind me of For Sephora.
Cool Jose will check it 🙏💕🎸Robin
Thank you, great lesson.
glad it helps Rimantas! Robin

Thanks for this, Robin. Really useful. Loved the show in Worcester, although you were almost upstaged by your shoes!

Do we know who Sephora is/was?
Sephora is a daughter from Stochelo Rosenberg and he wrote the tune when she was a little girl in the early 90’s 🙌
Thanks Robin. We can also head off sideways and play the Godfather theme too! 👀
Actually, no sooner had I finished looking at this vid when TH-cam suggested I look at Stochelo playing the Godfather. The clip also illustrated Stochelo's athletic vibrato: th-cam.com/video/vEkzfEwRh-I/w-d-xo.html
