- Video from the 1980 MJF of the wonderful, no bulls@@t - just real jazz 'George Coleman Octet' performance of Walzing Westward.
Solos by Sal Nistico - tenor; Harold Maburn (composer) piano; Billy Higgins - drums
I remember seeing this band in Italy. They were so good
Rare clip of Sal Nistico - one of most underrated tenor players really stretching out and playing his heart out. Thank you, Bob!
George Coleman, Sal Nistico- tenor sax; Danny Moore- flugelhorn; Harold Mabern-piano; Billy Higgins- drums. Clint Houston - bass.Looks like Frank Strozier- alto sax.
Jesus!!!
For SAL Fans => Here are 19 of The Great Sal Nistico’s Solos (videos) with The Woody Herman Thundering Herd in 1963 & 1964, extracted from 5 TV Shows (“Jazz Casual”, BBC/TV, and Montreal/TV).

I loved this band and remember them very well. Especially to hear my soul brother Sal blowing out means a lot to me and my memory. Also Big George and Billy Higgins I was friends with.
Long live Harold Mabern
Fantastic late 70’s wardrobe 🕺 Those were the days!
Don't forget the great Mario Rivera on baritone sax.
Harold Mabern ❤
Yes he was a marvelous piano player!!!
Formidable, tout comme l'album "Big George" que l'octet a enregistré en 1977!
So great!!!!
I’ve been looking for years for this performance in its entirety, since seeing it on the BBC in about 1985 I think! Thank you so much for posting it. It is absolutely brilliant
I have the whole concert (! hour 20 mins) if you'd like a copy :-) email me at bob.juke@gmail.com and I'll send you a dropbox link

Frank Strozier on alto. Wonderful player.
Think he retired from jazz about this time. Great shame awesome alto player.
Absolutely brilliant!, more from this concert?

Tnks😊
😲
Great Nistico who looks at the harmo structure, then plays by ear, like the jazz giants.
Classical problem with Harold Maburn who hit the keyboard like a true beast, with a bass overmixed, the sound is awfull.
My experience of those who mix the sound at jazz festivals (and it's considerable) is that the overwhelming majority of them have absolutely no idea what they're doing... Regrettably we then have to try to deal with what we are given
