Best performance of "Strike the Viol" ever, and I've listened to a lot of them! Ornamentation is what makes baroque music amazing. I love the dialogue between the strings and the recorders in the ritornello! It's a baroque jam session.
Too fast for my taste, verging on violent. Listen to how Michael Chance graces the words and how elegantly he sings. The secret is in the phrasing and text.
I’m obsessed with this video ! Grips me every time ... You can really feel this singer’s passion and the orchestra’s passion .... How heavenly they blend together .... it’s absolutely divine .. They really make history come to life ! We need more people like that !
My God everything about you Anglo-Saxons is fascinating. Tim Mead just the best and how handsome he is. Thanks to the members of the orchestra. Greetings from Paris.🎉
What a brilliant performance! Such a pleasure to see these gentle smiles and pure joy to play this masterpiece music. And, of course, Tim Mead is always perfect and soulful.
Magnifique !
Music videos don't get any better than this. Beautiful performance, engagement between the players and dramatic camerawork. Purcell, with his involvement in theatre, would have loved it. So very well done. CD purchased.

This is one of my favorite songs on the inter webs, must have listened to it 50 times. Thanks to these astonishing musicians for the gift of this incredible rendition ❤
I’m here again! Because I can’t get enough of this piece. And although I also have it on spotify, I return here to see the video: The joy and enthusiasm in each of their faces; the lightness and liveliness of the musicians' hands - they are all so beautiful. I love it.
NEVER get bored listening to this beautiful piece of music, and Tim Mead's sublime voice. That voice has such power and depth. The musicians are so gifted, too. 10/10
As apparent, with their collaboration, the Musiciens de Saint-Julien and Tim Mead, each already superb in their qualities, even potentiate their capabilities. What a luck that François Lazarevitch is also a historical musicology researcher, thus being able to reconstruct the original elegance of the baroque decorations. The performers give a demonstration, as to why Henry Purcell was named the Orpheus Britannicus, and why it is written on his grave slab, that only those in paradise can exceed his harmonies. It is wonderful that this video has been produced, and we can watch, how much pleasure it was for the artists performing this masterpiece. An absolute Ohrwurm, once heard and seen, it will never ever leave your phonological brain loops again: top of the pops! Thank you for giving it to us!
I’ve watched this too many times. I’ve come to really love the visual engagement, which initially annoyed me. I fell in love with Andreas Scholl years ago and, I have to say, Tim Meade is on this evidence his equal. Many thanks... here it goes once more. Perfect really. Thanks to everybody.
Grandios gespielt! (Und das sage ich sehr selten!) Wow ist das Geil! Ich kenne diese Musik seit Jahrzehnten. Aber diese Einspielung ist wirklich superb! Ich liebe Purcell. Einer meiner absoluten Top Komponisten.
What a delicious feast of music scene... even so cinematogrphic! Maybe coz all are here look somehow familiar to me. I'm smitten by the brilliant vocalist who has such a talent to express every bit of tunes with not only voice but face. I highly recommend another heavenly piece of his performance to all here, Erbarme Dich, Mein Gott ( Have Mercy My God) from Bach BWV 244. KUDOS to all exqusite members of this feast of art !
Absolutely hooked. Magnificent. Love the deliciously overwhelming elegance of the music (despite the backdrop), the tempo, the infectious joyousness and impassioned brilliance of all the performers, especially Tim Mead who is incredible.
Woke up in the middle of the night because I NEEDED to hear this song. And this performance is wunder wunder wunder wunder wunder wunder wunder wunder wunder schön
I came across this video by chance. And I was shocked. How beautiful! Both music and performance. Looked at about five times. Now the melody never leaves me. Perhaps forever.
Tim's rendition of this fabulous - and sinfully unknown - mini masterpiece, ably accompanied by the wonderful band which creates a gorgeously breathy and twangy high baroque sound (probably better than what they managed in the seventeenth century!) as backing track - and while having such bloody good, almost flirtatious, time while doing so - is the reason I come back to this time and time again. I certainly don't wish to send out anything other than positivity into the Universe by saying this so please please I hope no one tries to twist this into jungoism - but I am completely unapologetic about saying that there is just something so right - so bang on - about Tim's "Englishness" which joyfully delivers this as the king - nay the Emperor - of performances of the work. Incidentally, the locale is equally inspired so ten out of ten to the creative spark and imagination of whoever was individually or collectively responsible for the "faded industry" thing. I haven't really tried to read a connection between the music and the scenery a) cos there doesn't need to be one and b) I couldn't care anyway - this just works great! I really would like to see more of you all - perhaps in something live. There are intimate spaces dotted all over London where I am fortunate to live which would be great settings for the smaller scale gems of the Renaissance and Baroque. Anyway you lovely people of course I adore a the glorious Italianate stuff from the others - Handel, Scarlatti, Telemann, Monteverdi etc but there's something unique about Purcell - his particular uses of dissonance and crushed notes give it a particular searing intensity which shows so well represents the pathos without descending to schmaltz...🥰
Strike the Viol, touch the Lute; Wake the Harp, inspire the Flute Strike the Viol, touch the Lute; Wake the Harp, inspire the Flute: Sing your Patronesse's Praise, Sing, in cheerful and harmonious Lays.

Ce morceau me manque tellement... Bravo quel musique
Astounding impact! Love the ornamentation! Older English renditions of zhis used to be about half the speed, but this goes with a bang - well, you are called on to 'strike the viol' and not to 'stroke it' to sleep ...
What joyous music-making! Like being at an Elizabethan folk festival!Mead's vocal agilita is stunning, with most spectacular ornamentation. And what a fabulous ensemble of brilliant musicians! Thanks so much?
Purcell...wow
Lully, him, Vivaldi, Rameau forever ❤❤❤
The hapiness on their faces is umbelievable. Music is still an universal language.

OMG that is SO beautiful! Tim and the Ensemble! Take you to Heaven!!!

The best instrumentalists in the world. Tim Mead is shockingly gorgeous. This is it.
