- This short video highlights the key ideas about writing a problem statement. I am also sharing a list of 'not a problem' based on my past experience in supervising Masters and PhD students as well as from reviewing their work, as a member of review panels..

Thank you Dr for the practical, clear, and helpful insights on crafting a problem statement 🙌, a MUST watch for postgrads!
My problem statement starts with, "there is little understanding of the perceptions of the relationship between socioemotional development and online learning" and I was told that a lack of understanding is not a problem. I thought it interesting that you brought this up (and used online learning as your example).
Thank you so much for this! Really helpful and made me understand why a lack of study in a certain area is NOT a problem :)
this is a huge help. thank you professor!
Glad it was helpful!
This video is so great. I has improved my understanding surely
This is mind-blowing presentation thank you Prof
thank you, very clear and informative Dr, but probably you need to put the whole example on the slide so we can understand better.
Thanks for the suggestion. I will take note in my future videos.
Thank you very much, Sir

Thanks professor
Good evening Prof. Yuan. I really like your presentation.
Thank you! 😃
Thnku Sir
vert clearly, it is very helpfull to me. thanks a lot❤
You're welcome 😊
Thank you very much
Good explanation with examples.
Glad it helps.
Thank you so much! 👍
TQ Dr
Thank you sir! Subscribed (422) !
Cool
Afternoon Prof. What if it could potentially be a new research area which has not been explored and current literatures are not addressing this? Wouldn't exploring this new research area contribute to the body of knowledge?
The answer is, possibly, yes. But, as I have explained in my sharing, we need to consider all possibilities why there's no research in a so-called 'new' research area. A key question to ask ourselves is, 'Is this really a brand new area for research?' E.g. digitalisation and organisational culture. Org culture is an old field of research but if we look at the org culture of digitalisation, it is relatively new. But we still have an old element in it, i.e. org culture, with plenty of literature to review. So, it is not a totally new area with no prior research. Another new area would be any issues related to the pandemic. Let's put aside any particular issue but let's look at the pandemic. The pandemic is not a new phenomenon! We had pandemics before this. Also, a pandemic can be classified as a kind of crisis where we can look at an organisation's crisis management or risk management system. So, my conclusion is, it is rare to have a 'totally new' area/topic of research, although I acknowledge that possibility. In that case, you are correct. I hope these help. :=)
Thank you sir
Was so helpful
Most welcome
thank you for this its elaborate
You are most welcome.
Good evening Prof.Yuan . My undergraduate research tittle is water absorption and permeability for concrete containing fly ash and waste glass . Can I write my problem statement like tis
Shortage of cement cause obstacles and increasing costing of construction buildings. Indeed, we have to determine the new replacement of materials which were fly ash and waste glass to replace shortage of raw materials
Sounds good! You have highlighted the practical problems. But was there any gap in the empirical studies?
Thanks a lot.
Most welcome!
YES, I TOTALLY AGREE. THESE ARE RESEARCH GAPS NOT PROBLEM STATEMENTS.
Is the research problem not supposed to be a problem in the research so the lack of research on a topic should be a valid research problem to use?
Zaahira. Generally, it could be correct to say that. But why there was no research been done if it has been recognised as a problem? Is it because it is non-researchable or it is not worth being researched into as the costs and time in conducting the research outweigh the benefits (meaning, the problem is not significant enough to justify research)? You may refer to some books on research for such kind of examples.
