- Beyond the Horizon, recreating the rugged life of a Wild West Pioneer. My chuck wagon and I are on a mission to off grid homestead Oklahoma the way it was done in 1883. With a good set of Old West tools and a little bushcraft knowhow I'll hopefully survive the next winter.
IN THIS EPISODE: I can't believe I wasn't bit by that black widow spider! The third and final retaining wall went much smother than the previous two (done in previous episodes) because I had learned from my mistakes. The retaining wall is important because the walls that will be built upon them will be incredibly heavy. The process of adding the water and compacting the dirt behind it is a process I didn't really show with the other two walls but I did do it to those too.
The reason I added sod with grass to the outside is to stop erosion on that side of the wall, water coming off the roof had already started to eat away at a portion of the wall.
Also this was my first attempt at making char cloth and it worked great! I left it in the fire for about 20 minutes but I think next time I'll leave it in there a little longer.
Thank you for watching and if you enjoy the video please remember to give it a thumbs up!
God bless,
Will
Blocking up the wagon to get it off the ground isn’t really necessary. You want the wheels to absorb moisture to prevent shrinkage of the wood. I haul my wagon down to the boat landing at the creek and back it into the water up to the hubs and let it sit for a few hours. I then I back it in farther to soak the other half of the wheels. It’s called “Sweating” the wheels. It prevents the wheels from drying out and shrinking and splitting. It keeps the wheel irons tight as well. I learned that from the wheelwright about 50 years ago when I had to have new wheels put on one of my wagons.
That's pretty cool thank you for mentioning that.
Outstanding video!👍👍👍👍👍🎖🎖🎖🎖🎖🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🪵🪵🪵🪵🪵🪵🪵🪵🪵🪵🪵🪚🪚🪚🪚🪚🪚🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯
Just found your channel tonight and I love it. I’ve been dreaming of doing something like this since I was 10 or 11, I’m now 64 and the dream is all but gone but I can live it through your channel. Great videos, keep up the good work. Thanks
@@dougwhidden6700 Thank you so much! It's great to hear you're enjoying the channel.
Hola
The homestead is coming along nicely. Thanks for showing us how our pioneering forefathers settled the frontier. You've recreated the realism of the American pioneer.
Looking great. Most people don’t realize how much work that is.
I guarantee your whooped at the end of the day.
Work hard, eat good, sleep great!
It really doesn’t get any better than that.
Thanks 4 bring us along
Thank you. It is a lot of work but I'm having the time of my life doing it. Thank you for watching!
Omgosh! I love this channel. And I love how you remove your hat before saying Grace at mealtime. Much to be thankful for.
Hey thank you. And yes absolutely!
Seeing how America's first settlers lived in practice has been really cool and reflective. I think every man should go through this experience and forget about big urban centers just a little less. Good job you did in this video.
Viiiiiiisssssshhhhh
I agree 100% and thank you!
Another fantastic episode - Thank You kindly! Hope the spider didn't stick around
You have done a great job with the cabin! Thanks for documenting it so we can watch
Awesome content
Love all the hard work
Frontier living dam
Beautiful land
Greetings from the off grid cabin in Ohio. Lots of progress on the project, looks good. Stay safe and God bless. See you down the trail.
Hey Pard,
Borax , tobacco, wood ash and garlic were all great insecticides used by western settlers back in the pioneer days..should keep the ants and ticks away
.Good luck and Thanks for the great Videos.
I didn't know that, thank you for mentioning that.
I knew a messican Indian in Oklahoma that used red clay and grass to make adobe bricks, he'd make them then set em on his roof in the summer sun to cure.. just an idea for a building material
I definitely want to try something like that.
Your video makes me feel good. You are the creator of beautiful scenes. I enjoyed watching your video❤
Thank you so much!
Belíssimo trabalho gosto muito dos vídeos .Brasil.
That wagon looks like it could be straight out of Harbour Village at Grove OK 😊
My Favorite part is that the Video says All that's Needed. GOOD JOB .
👍👍👌👌 Thanks for the video.
Great video as usual. I hope more young men, and women will watch your stuff. True manliness is almost lost in our culture. There are the body builders and such, but real men don't need to show off and bring attention to themselves, use foul language, etc. You're a great example - keep it up!
Thank you that really means a lot to me.
Howdy from Texas, we really enjoy your videos, keep them coming, thanks and God bless the cowboy.
Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying them.
It is fascinating and relaxing to watch the small details of how you complete each task.
It was interesting to watch how you make tinder by using a strip of rolled cloth placed in a metal box to char on a fire.
Thank 🙏🏻you for sharing your experience and looking forward to the next one.
Thank you I'm so glad you enjoyed it! That was the first time I made char cloth and it turned out great.
Looking good! Very interesting to see your progress!! Be safe with the spiders and such! God bless!
That’s a lot of work my friend but satisfying 🔥👌
Great content!
I am really enjoying this ! From the looks of the red clay your either in Oklahoma or somewhere around Medicine Lodge KS in the red hills.
Yes Oklahoma!
Nice cabin. I identify a lot with you, if I could I would do that too, I really like the western, cowboy, nature theme. Keep it up and good work cowpoke.
Thank you my man.
Very very cool video and the best life to live
Nice sunset 👍😎👍
Dadgurm..what's a feller gotta do to get a new pioneer video released..Hold up a stagecoach!? Rob The payroll train!?... maybe get myself on a wanted poster!??? Tell whoevers in charge over there we burning daylight !! Time to get em movin!!!😅
haha will do! I think this Saturday morning will be the day. You'll see why the next one took so long to film, I literally spent hundreds of hours on it. I moved about two tons of dirt by hand to build the sod walls.
@@WesternPioneer well if you need a hand just send up a smoke signal and I'll circle the wagons.
@@ryanstubblefield8593 Thank you Sir!
Amazing channel! Keep up the good work
That saw is outset by the sound of it in the cut. sure is peace full no power noise around.
Я очень восхищаюсь когда строят жилье это. Самое. Главное. Жилье человек старается. Трудится молодцы❤❤❤❤❤о
Спасибо!
I keep looking behind him, waiting for some Comanche Bucks too come riding out of the trees lol
Looks like he's in the Southeast because of the red clay and it's very green with fauna. So I reckon some Seminole warrior or Redstick Creek brave may creep
New sub here, You look like the guy i saw in an old western pic who has a gen. store next to his house.
Parabéns pelo trabalho, excelente vídeo.
Obrigado!
Tks for video.
The Spider on the water barrel looked like a Aussie red back Spider....???
Coming along!
Well done Sir. I just stumbled across your channel two days ago. How did you find a piece of land to homestead on? People you knew? I have watched every episode and will anxiously watch for the next one to appear. Will, you are one hard working young man.
Thank you so much and I'm so happy you're enjoying the channel! I forget exactly what website I found this land on to buy but there are a few websites that specialize in listing hunting properties for sale. whitetailproperties(.com) is one of them, I looked for about 6 months before finding this property.
Great progress, we are always wondering where you keep your drinking water.
Thank you. Really right now I'm just bringing in clean water in a canteen. Once the cabin is complete I want to address the drinking water issue in a more historically accurate way.
This is Real.
Just discovered your channel and binge watched all your videos here in the UK. I usually skip by ASMR videos but found them so relaxing and easy to watch. Will they all be ASMR or do you plan to talk in futre episodes? I understand that its difficult talking to a camera as I've been in a couple of friend's videos. Looking forward to following your journey.
Hey thank you for watching all my videos! I'm glad you're enjoying them. I might make a behind the scenes video soon so I'll talk to the camera in that if I do. I mainly want to talk about historical accuracy and some of the challenges I'm facing in regards to that.
I am also binge watching 🤪
Get some wax and cotton or something equivalent and mix it together.
I am sure there are cat tails near that river close to you.
What part of the country are you in? Looks a little like Oklahoma. Great videos.
Yep, Oklahoma where the wind comes sweeping down the plains.
So you just wadded up some cloth in a Altoids can or whatever and threw it in the fire for 30 min for the char cloth? Nice vid!
Yes the cloth needs to be all natural fibers and the can can't be air tight. I think Altoids cans are air tight so you'd need to poke a little hole in it. And I think I did put it in the fire for about 30 minutes. Thank you!
thank you for all the Hard Work and Informative, Interesting Videos.
please keep it up! best regards...walt+mrs
(sub'd, always "like", occasionally comment)
Thank you so much and I'm glad you're enjoying the videos.
That is some wet clay!
Yes in the three days before filming it rained 8 inches. I was very happy to see that there wasn't more water inside.

Γεια σας ευχαριστώ που παρακολουθήσατε!
How long did you leave the char cloth box in the fire. That looked super easy.
My great grandfather was a jack of all trades during the old west. He was born in 1870, and I think by the late 1890s, in the early 1900s, he worked as a carpenter. I have his tool chest here in the garage. It weighs 300 lbs or more. Mostly Stanley tools.
It does not take all that long, I make mine by putting it in my charcoal grill after i’m done cooking, and let it char as the grill goes out, and don’t really worry about a set time/temperature.
Just be sure to use 100% cotton cloth, no synthetic fibers, those melt rather than char.
It was about 25 minutes but I don't think it would have hurt to leave it in longer. That was my first time ever making it and it worked good. And wow that's really cool, definitely hang onto that tool chest.
where did you find that holster rig? I love it
I got it at riverjunction .com. It's their authentic hardware store belt and their cheyenne holster, I absolutely love it.
why does your dog look exactly like main
all my respect for this man, those were the good old days even if life was harder yesterday is it easier today? What social problems these globalists of nothingness are inflicting on us, everything is going into a tailspin today. thank you to this man for these images perhaps it would be better to undo everything to rebuild again in the simplicity of the heart and find a little more humanism, perhaps one day.... bless you all! let's come back to ourselves the greatest danger for us is to forget God it is he who will come to restore all things.
Amen my brother.
Well, maybe I spoke too soon! Maybe this will be partly sod.
That’s right the rest of it will be made from sod, I’ve started it and it’s a much more challenging process than I anticipated. These people were really tough, tougher than me that’s for sure.
Was hetzt Hüttenbau oder Kochsendung (immer das Gleiche !)🤨
How much would you say it has cost you to build this?
The cabin probably cost less than $1000 for the lumber and the nails. Eventually it will have windows, I've already bought them from a flee market for $100 and then I bought some big used hinges for the door, $10. The roof still needs some waterproofing though but the whole build has been pretty cheap I'd say.
@@WesternPioneer wow in this economy, I better build myself a log cabin
What do you do when you're not working on the homestead??
I'm starting up a modern homestead in addition to this one that I film. With the modern one I've built a barn/workshop and planted 20 fruit and nut trees. It's not too impressive just yet but in a few years I hope the old and the new homesteads are as functional as they are beautiful.
👍👍👍👍👍🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🤠🤠🤠🤠🤠
I love this channel, but it is hard to locate a certain episode.. Why can't you just label them Western Pioneer Episode 10????
They're in order in the playlist on my channel page but yeah I should start doing that.
❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉
👍
Great work! What was the meat?
It was chicken thighs, my favorite.
Is this Oklahoma?
Yes!

LOL…
Why do you not speak?
He is alone minding his own business.
I dunno...he didn't say...
I don't like talking to a camera but I may do a behind the scenes video soon where I answer some FAQ's and talk about the history behind some things.
@@WesternPioneer Thanks, I like the way you do things.
you dont need to put chinking in between layers?
Eventually I'll get around to it.
@@WesternPioneer looks great so far man, keep up the good work
