5 Days Alone in the West: Building a Cozy Bed from START to FINISH
Sleep tight and don't let the Venomous Copperheads bite! My chuck wagon and I are on a mission to off grid homestead Oklahoma the way it was done in 1883. With a good set of pioneer tools and a little bushcraft knowhow I'll hopefully survive the coming winter.
In this episode I originally wanted to finish the sod walls but I'm recovering from covid so I thought I'd do something less strenuous. I turned out to be completely wrong, this bed took a huge amount of energy to make. In the end though I absolutely love it and it's incredibly comfortable. It took about 165 feet of rope to make.
The Copperhead came so close to biting me. Normally I'm looking down for snakes but at this moment I had my head up to doge a tree branch. At the corner of my eye I saw something move violently at me (it was striking) and instinctually I started picking up my feet, I danced in place and I made a sound like a man losing balance about to fall off a roof. I'm glad no one saw it because I'm sure it was embarrassing. I composed myself and started recording, but you can still hear my panicked breathing.
I look forward to all your questions and comments.Thank you for watching and if you enjoy the video please remember to give it a thumbs up!
God bless,
Will

    This ep. was filmed 5 months ago. I would love to see how far along you have come toward completing your home. the last ep. I saw was the one where you constructed your rope bed. I've seen lots of survival and bushcraft videos, but this is the first I have seen like this, authentic western settler/pioneer. Watching from Missouri.

      Thank you, I love this time period and I'm trying to make it as authentic as I can. The real pioneers would have finished their cabin a lot faster than I have though. I'm making a little progress you'll see in the next episode but the weather isn't cooperating. I still hope to be done by December and I've got a lot of antiques to fill the cabin with so that will be fun.

    Really enjoying your videos. There's a sod house up in my region (Canadian prairies) that is used as part of a museum. Search Elbow Sod Shack. Yours has a higher roof. I'm always wondering about the wagon backstory, even though it might not fit the on screen narrative. Thanks for showing all the hard work.

    • @WesternPioneer
      @WesternPioneer 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you! I'm glad that sod house up by you is being taken care of, I don't think there are too many left. My wagon is a Bane wagon from sometime in between 1880 and 1910. It was made in Kenosha Wisconsin and was used as a grain wagon in Missouri. The man I bought it from in Missouri commented "this wagon made some old farmer a lot of money over the years" which is fun to think about. I found it on Craigslist and did a lot of work to it to get it functional and to preserve it a little better. I really love this old wagon.

    I have so many unanswered questions. Where is your horse or mule? How did you get more eggs? Where did the milled limber come from? If this is going to truly portray a western pioneer I feel these are questions that need explaining. Perhaps some talking about a trip into the nearest town. Or a farmer miles down the road. What you are showing is very interesting, but to just start on a homestead and not talk about obtaining materials and perishable foods stretches the imagination and is not realistic. JMHO.

    • @WesternPioneer
      @WesternPioneer 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes it's not perfect. Slowly over time I will become more and more historically accurate and true to life. For example I'm looking forward to growing my own wheat and harvesting it next year to make my bread. Overtime it will get better.

    Very cool. How much rope did I take to make the bed. Did u do the math on making it to just hope it was long enough. Also left the length on the end any reason.

    • @WesternPioneer
      @WesternPioneer 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I was so worried it wasn't going to be long enough, I was stressed for a week over this. It took about 170 feet and I left the length on the end just in case I wanted to change something. Now that I know I'm happy with it I will cut it.

    • @WesternPioneer
      @WesternPioneer 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you for your concern. This is something I'm very passionate about and I'm actually doing a lot of work behind the scenes to improve and restore the land. Perviously the land was not well taken care of. In the 1950's it was used for oil drilling and a lot of junk and trash was left behind and there's evidence of oil spills sadly. Then probably starting in the 1970's the land was over grazed by cattle which killed off the native grasses, almost all the grass you see in my videos are non native weeds that don't help the wildlife. This winter I'm going to put down native prairie grass seeds and try to restore the grass to how it would have looked originally which will also create more habitat for wildlife as the native grasses provides them more food and cover from predators. Also 90% of the trees I've cut down are cedars, they are non native to this area and are a big fire hazard. They're so bad that Oklahoma used to have a program that they would pay you to cut them down on your property. I can't wait to see what the land looks like in 5 years.

    What is the orange thing? Sweet potato? Also how are you keeping the meat from spoiling? What about water? Are boiling it from the water source?

    • @WesternPioneer
      @WesternPioneer 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes it's a sweet potato. Right now have a modern day cooler to keep my meat from spoiling. Often the pioneers would just put their meat in their barrel full of drinking water to keep it from spoiling, I don't want to die of dysentery. Once I'm further along with the cabin build I can divert more attention to preserving meats.
