If I remember correctly on San Andreas you just got stuck in an infinite loop seemIng as if you were keeping going but I think it was just a loop because returning back never took the same amount of time

Forza Horizon 4 has a strange pull back mechanic at the edge of it map, your car just gains extreme speeds backwards that send you back into the boundaries

the reason for the bondaries its to protect the user for possible issues that can happen in extreme large positions, the game was to store you position somewhere, if you keep going far and far, eventually you position zxy will be to big im not sure if its possible to have a infinite map without errors as any game that allow this have errors, so any game that allows unlimited travelling will eventually get rendering issues and problems, the only game that fixes this is the ones that somehow "Reset you position" number or change the map while you play, a example is no man sky, when ou travel to another star you are essentially loading another world, so the distance effects get reseted the game is not allowing you to travel infinitely on the same instance of the world cause its changing you the worlds (but of course the games make you feel like you travelling very far, but internally in the game memory u are changing the world.)

When you try to leave the map by throwing the character to the water a cutscene is triggered.
