I see that there is some link to the E30 M3's boxy fenders, but that's where the comparison ends. I don't understand what they were thinking in terms of the use of rectangles and squares on the front and rear. Poor lines, bad flow in general. It's not a successful design.
Yeah it's definitely riding the '80s into the 90s vibe. Personally I like it but that's the era that I fell in love with cars in. It seems to be the right size and right proportions for someone like me. The issue with the car is that it's an M. I am very attracted to this car though there are some things that I don't know why I don't quite like. I have to go back and revisit the normal 2 series and see if it has slightly less bulgy fenders as I see that's going to be a more viable car. At the end of the day it's an M car so it's not for everybody and will be extraordinary for better or worse. I'm finding a lot of cars grow on me after sometime and aren't nearly as offensive. One thing I don't quite understand is the need to have the entire lineup share so much language. I think Mercedes actually got super annoying when it became kind of hard to distinguish their cars. I like that the a series looks a bit different than the rest of it. I like when models can stand on their own and maybe have a few elements from other things but they don't have to be chained together but I guess that is the European way of tiering cars. Then again you can look at the Renault Megan and see some true insanity.
the R34 has proper proportions across the lines. this M2 is weird. however i find it way better looking than the G80/G82 3/4 series just for the smaller grill alone. but this is just me
i think the "pulling down" look is nice because it looks more planted. the wide body helps give it that glued to the ground look. unFORTUNATELY it doesnt look like it actually 'grips' that well based on how much they drifted it >:)

Yup, the kidneys are fine but not really fan of the box intakes for the front. Same goes for the rear end for the boxy proportions. Gonna miss the analog dash though.
Their elegance left YEARS ago in my opinion. Foreign vehicles no longer carry presence. They’re all copying each other now. Very sad to watch as someone who loved BMW, Benz, Audi, etc as a kid.
The interior is almost perfect. They should've put the analog gauges from base model 3 series in it and right next to it the bigger screen. That combo would've been so well integrated and absolutely perfect.🤌
I think right now BMW design is on overtime to make the 2-3 year refresh models. I expect the refreshes to at least get better cohesive design and salvage the car till the next generation where it evolves this design language to look better or throw it out with something better. I think BMW needs to fire its design team and pay what it has to get Kias design team.
i think the abundance of ipad dashboard are a result (at least partly) of supply chain issues, it's way easier to get a rectangular slab of screen and implement a digital display than to create a dash that has many physical buttons and dashes. I hope in the future the ipads will go away, or at least not completely taking up the dash...
So now what's your take on the new BMW Z4? Not static at all! And another design language again… I think the front headlights are a bit bulgy (Mercedes-like) but at least the kidney grille seems well done.

Car design is about design language and how it evolves. Customers become emotionally involved with a design language, especially because the experience it provides is much more than just enjoyment, it becomes and extension of one’s own personality. Product design is approached in the same way, but for car design there’s a lot more emotional attachment. Shoe design comes to mind with how much emotional attachment and personality extension is involved. BMW’s approach to design pushes and evolves the entire design language when a new gen comes out. I think once you understand BMW’s design principles and approach to BMW design language evolution over time, you will understand a lot of the design decisions that are taken. If you want a revamped gen that’s why they have the LCI program. But when a new gen comes out it’s pushed beyond. Also BMW internally is a generation ahead, meaning they already know what the new gen of this looks like and are refining it. They are way ahead of us in terms of understanding design decisions and I guarantee they already know the reactions that are coming. And this is what they want. BMW likes to push the design language as part of its ethos. I’d prefer this over Audi, AMG, Maserati and even dare I say it, Porsche
I'm not a designer and even I can tell the parts just don't add up. There's awkward squares and rectangles and then round parts and there's no flow. BMW's new design direction is straight into a brick wall.. these new designs have literally stopped me from purchasing their current gen M3 and now I'm going to be skipping this M2. If they keep moving in this direction, I don't think I'll be coming back to BMW anytime soon. Hopefully I can get my hands on a "old" M2 CS when the economy is done shitting itself.
The blue M2 is not the pre facelift car, it’s the not really long built M2 LCI (facelift) but not the Competition, which has the connected black kidney grills. You can see it in the „old“ kidneys, but you can see it on the LED headlights, which the pre LCI doesn’t have.
@@eastterminal2246 you haven’t seen it in person yet have you? Neither have I. But I am certain it will look nice. Just like the M4 everybody was trash talking it until it was seen in person in a show room then their opinion changed.
I worked as a cleaner at a BMW dealership. When they placed the new 2 series in the hall I personally thought and still think it looks beautiful. Maybe it is as most of the time a question of taste
the boxy and drawn out fenders are quite cool indeed. the rest is pretty katastrophic imo. front looks drawn out in 30 minutes, almost like they just skipped the final rendering to finish the design all up. not a fan
this has the exact same engine and transmission as the m4. so what bmw said about the m4 and how the grill was made like that for cooling is bs. because this looks a bit better and achieves the same amount of cooling
Very good analysis 👍 As an OG F87 owner since 2016 I completely agree, my "upgrade" to G87 does not seem much of an upgrade. I've already upgraded mine with camber plates, brakes etc for track days and I see no reason to waste money on a car I just don't find attractive for a few kW more. Better to add coilovers and a tune and be faster on track that the hideous G87
I agree with your observation of “static lines” dominating the front end design of this car. Not very exciting. However, I disagree with A-pillars pointing to where they are “supposed to” point; the front axel. Successful cases against this philosophy are AMG GT, Dodge Viper, and arguably one of the most revolutionary designs ever, the Lamborghini Countach. I’d stop making this argument all together with. It’s not valid. But! I love everything else you’re doing/saying.
WOW Everyone here knows so much about design, you and your viewers have really nice taste. I also like how you draw lines on the little pictures so that i can understand what you are saying daddy. I like all the design when they come out! I really don't understand all the hate. And things I don't like, too much kitch, I can understand. BMW is big in China and Chinese like the bling.
tbh its the headlights that annoy me the most. Old one looked so determined and cool with the two rings. this one looks distracted, unfocused, dumb. Hate the rearlights as well. They should be more horizontal but this is just meh.
The in the middle of nowhere hood shut line completely ruins any front end design! When you do the redesign, please place it correctly (just above the kidneys). Also…BMW should stop putting horizontal (which belongs to Audi) slats inside the kidneys, instead of typical vertical ones (double vertical on the M cars).
I think it kinda looks like a lego speed champions model you know how lego cars become kinda boxier and more angled because they're mostly 90 degree pieces?
I couldn't understand why the car didn't look right to me, but you explained it perfectly. Disjointed, lacks passion, very caricature like.. just has "features" rather than a cohesive design. Lastly, BMW is all over the place... so weird to see it.
All the interiors in the lineup are just the same design in different sizes. Anyways I reckon this looks amazing, the proportions are way better than the previous generation which looked abit taller and narrow in comparison. Well those that can't afford it will just comment like myself and our opinions are worth nothing haha.

Eh? No! BMW tries to stand out with ugly Design! It's like the loud and weird People that shout LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME!😜
@@einautofan6685 It's more there trying to attract a new Clientele.
Most people who like their current lineup Hated previous models.
I like how Lego were the consultancy firm involved with the M2
i wonder if darker colors will help mute some of these design issues.
Hopefully I can get my hands on a "old" M2 CS when the economy is done shitting itself.
can you do the RS3? 8V vs 8Y
The blue M2 is not the pre facelift car, it’s the not really long built M2 LCI (facelift) but not the Competition, which has the connected black kidney grills. You can see it in the „old“ kidneys, but you can see it on the LED headlights, which the pre LCI doesn’t have.
It’s so close, soooo close, someone makes a body kit for the front and back and it’ll look so much better
Sound like another bot that complained about the big grill 4 series when it first came out
@@Mangofresh2012 imagine calling people with common sense bots💀💀💀
@@eastterminal2246 you haven’t seen it in person yet have you? Neither have I. But I am certain it will look nice. Just like the M4 everybody was trash talking it until it was seen in person in a show room then their opinion changed.
@@Mangofresh2012 it's ironic, that you and hundreds of people are saying the exact same words as you about the m4 and how they like it now.
@@Mangofresh2012 key word their is “opinion” you have yours and I have mine, move on.
I however do like that the models look different from each other.
I would absolutely hate to see a Passat being just a prolongated Golf.
I worked as a cleaner at a BMW dealership. When they placed the new 2 series in the hall I personally thought and still think it looks beautiful. Maybe it is as most of the time a question of taste
I am so glad that i ve decided 1.5 yrs ago to get an F87 M2C instead of waiting for the new one … best decision ever 💫
the boxy and drawn out fenders are quite cool indeed. the rest is pretty katastrophic imo. front looks drawn out in 30 minutes, almost like they just skipped the final rendering to finish the design all up. not a fan
LOL carbon fiber roof to save 6kg after adding like 200kg
I like it. People are still gonna buy it. Just like the new m3/4. Stop complaining if you are.
It’s way better designed than the previous model.more focused & straightforward.exudes power & technology
this has the exact same engine and transmission as the m4. so what bmw said about the m4 and how the grill was made like that for cooling is bs. because this looks a bit better and achieves the same amount of cooling
This grill looks so much bether than the ones on the m3/m4.
It really is a new style of the classic BMW grills.
Industrial designers bristling as Bembli says lamps can’t be emotional 🫥
It's funny because people have been saying this forever. Everyone made fun of the E90 but now it's a classic shape
You were looking at the LCI M2. You meant the M2 competition when referring to the connected kidney grills ;)
Very good analysis 👍
As an OG F87 owner since 2016 I completely agree, my "upgrade" to G87 does not seem much of an upgrade.
I agree with every single point made in this video.
WOW Everyone here knows so much about design, you and your viewers have really nice taste. I also like how you draw lines on the little pictures so that i can understand what you are saying daddy. Thanks to Athletic Greens for sponsoring this video! (It's not that healthy for you. Please dont waste your money.)
Someone should photoshop/edit a e36 m3 wing onto this car. I think it would fit since it has more boxier lines in the front back and rear fenders.
I guarantee one day it will look old, different and unique, and everyone will crave one……….. if your watching this in 2035, am I right ?
Ooh Ian...
No
Hell no
"edited" and its ruined there credibility not there anymore delete and post properly and check back in 12 years and 2 months and a half
It's super expensive in 2035 bro... Can hardly get cars with wheels anymore
Even though I liked how the older cars looked, I like BMW is trying bold new stuff. Although I hope other manufacturers don’t follow this philosophy.
Nope. BMW are actually panicking. Someone needs to fire their current CEO or at least have a company reformation
Remember, BMW’s design is always steps ahead. You will always like their designs 10-20 years after release.
I actually think this is one of the best design BMW made it for years I absolutely love the car.
The new car has strong E30, E36, R34 vibes. I like it.
I own a E30 and this new M2 is blocky in all the wrong ways
The in the middle of nowhere hood shut line completely ruins any front end design! When you do the redesign, please place it correctly (just above the kidneys).
Also…BMW should stop putting horizontal (which belongs to Audi) slats inside the kidneys, instead of typical vertical ones (double vertical on the M cars).
It’s clear. M lites will retain the sporty look that resembles the base models and M lines will be more aggressive in design
Personally I love the design of this BM
It's like it's got Amazon boxes glued to the sides.
Great video Bembli!
I think it kinda looks like a lego speed champions model
you know how lego cars become kinda boxier and more angled because they're mostly 90 degree pieces?
I couldn't understand why the car didn't look right to me, but you explained it perfectly. Disjointed, lacks passion, very caricature like.. just has "features" rather than a cohesive design. Lastly, BMW is all over the place... so weird to see it.
All the interiors in the lineup are just the same design in different sizes. Anyways I reckon this looks amazing, the proportions are way better than the previous generation which looked abit taller and narrow in comparison. Well those that can't afford it will just comment like myself and our opinions are worth nothing haha.
