    THANK YOU so much for your video. I do not have a Newfoundland, but I do have a large dog. He is extremely skittish and has bad PTSD, which makes him scared of EVERYTHING! Because of your video we were able to clip him without any problems. I am so glad that I watch this because otherwise I would have tried to clip him standing up. Because he was laying down he seem to be a lot calmer. Thank you again from both me and my doggy..

    Thank you for this. I have an older Newf who is getting constant hot spots lately, the vet recommended we shave her so we can find the hot spots before they get infected. This helped me get brave enough to do it.

      I had the exact situation. My Newf was actually shaved by the vet, because of hot spots. She has stayed so much cooler this summer and is indoors most of the time. I think I will do it every summer now.

    No. You want to avoid doing this at all costs.
    A Newfie’s double coat protects them from the cold AND from the summer heat. When you shave it it permanently damages the coat.

      I explain in the video, if I don't shave him he will get hot spots(skin infections). We live in Cincinnati, OH where it is usually humid and too hot for a northern dog with a double coat(except in the winter when I let it grow out). It costs $150 to have a large breed shaved so learned how to do it myself. I get so many compliments, even from veterinarians, that I decided to share with the world how it can be done easily and properly at home.

    Their coat insulates them both against hot and cold. It protects them from the sun and is an important part of them. That’s like peeling a thick layer of your skin off.

    • @JLawL
      @JLawL 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Our vet told us to shave ours because they kept getting hot spots. Their coat may help insulate them against the sun, but it does NOT protect them from 100 degree weather, nor does it help them cool off when they're in water that doesn't actually reach their skin.

  • @edwardleas4792
    @edwardleas4792 5 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    The topcoat is made up of tougher guard hairs that don’t shed, and protect your pet from the sun’s harmful rays and bug bites. It actually insulates them from the heat. What this means is: do not shave your double coated dog. It’s a mistake to think you’re helping your animal stay cool, particularly in summer, when evolution has provided them exactly what they need to survive. By stripping them of their natural ability to heat and cool themselves, you could be doing more harm than good.

  • @kimpanther
    @kimpanther 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    Bad, bad idea. Newfoundland dogs shed for a reason. It just pains me to see that people will use the word 'humane' loosely to rationalize their poor choices. Unless your dog needs surgery or your vet suggests it, shaving a long-haired Newfie is counterproductive as the long hair protects them from the heat as well. Plus, I find it hard to believe that an average Midwesterner does not have an a/c unit for the hottest summer days. And if you live in a hot place, perhaps getting a Newfoundland dog is not such a smart idea anyway. There you go, I spoke my piece.

    Newfoundlands' very thick double coat keeps them warm in Artic winters. Nonsense to say it keeps them cool in summer. Obviously, never observed a fully coated Newfy in a warm house, then seen the change following a haircut. Miraculous! You try sitting in a centrally heated house with a massive coat and try losing the heat through breathing and feet - it can't be done. Unfortunately, all the professional grooming advice about this is wrong...just observe the dog! And as for sunburn, don't take babies and Newfies out in the mid-day sun...obviously!

  • @Baerst
    @Baerst 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I hope everyone knows that the advice in this video is wrong. Anyone considering grooming their dog should find a video made by a professional groomer.
    1. Never shave a dog with a double coat.
    2. Never shave a dog that short as they can get sunburned without the protection.
    3. You are supposed to shave a dog with the flow of their coat not against it.

  • @Shane7492

    It's a shame people don't do their research and learn the functions of a double coat and how to keep a double coated dog groomed well and how to keep them comfortable in the summer even in warmer climates. You really should never shave a double coated dog down to the skin. The key to managing hot spots and keeping the dog cool is all about proper brushing and having cool areas in your house for the dog to stay comfortable inside. Get yourself a good undercoat rake and spend a decent amount of time brushing the dog AT LEAST 2 or 3 times a week when not blowing coat, and EVERY DAY for at least 30 min. when the dog is blowing coat. If you don't brush out a small pillow worth of hair every day while the dog is blowing coat, you haven't brushed enough. You should notice that the dog will instantly feel relief after a good brushing. This will also help to prevent many hot spots. Also, get some elevated pet beds and box fans, and your Newf will be in heaven while in the house. Take them on walks early morning or late evening, and take them swimming. Do all these things well, and you will have a happy, comfortable, and beautiful Newf all year round almost no matter where you live.

    • @kevlaurtube
      @kevlaurtube  6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      We let it grow a little longer in the winter and he is older and doesn't go in the water much anymore. He need to be shaved because if not he gets hot spots(skin infections). The climate in Cincinnati, OH is hot in the summer and humid almost year round. If I lived in Canada I'm sure he wouldn't need to be shaved as much.

    • @timothyrigg1497
      @timothyrigg1497 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Beast Gaming - You are correct in that you should not shave a Newfie if you live in cold climates. I live in Missouri and here it can get to below 0F in the winter, but in will also regularly be 100F+ during the summer. In the past I did not shave my Newfi (who is my service dog) during the summer and she was miserable and consistently had issues with hot spots . Last summer I had her shaved (not as short as this video, about 1/2") and she was radically more comfortable and no hot spots. The coat grew out perfectly again and was there when she needed it in the winter. For hotter climates, shaving a Newfi is more humane than not.
