"The sword you built is the closest I have ever seen, to what I believe would be the best, thanks for the reminder, to look forward to the opportunity, to make my own."
Beautiful Job! I honestly believe that this is one of the best quality and well crafted swords I have seen in years and I am including the hundreds of forged in fire television shows I have watched. You are truly on your way to creating a Genuine mark on blacksmithing custom weapons. Keep it up. I'd like to see if you could make something much simpler sometime, but I will ask you about that another time. Nice work! Congratulations
Your heat treating looked good I always temper the metal at 350° for 2 hours then I allow the metal to cool own its own it helps that spring still not to be too hard so it can have some flexibility and it's nowhere near as brittle
Liam, you made a beautiful sword! I am just starting out forging too and have a decent supply of 5160 to work with and hope to make something approaching the level of quality of your sword. I especially appreciate the way you made the pommel, very creative use of a drill press and drill, I will be doing the same thing.
Fine, fine, I’ll finish my sword. The blade’s been sitting outside and rusting. Amazing job, by the way. I’m an American in Russia learning bladesmithing, and it seems I could learn a lot from you. If you make a scabbard, I’d love to see that.
great job. i like how straight grind lines are. but sword came out bit thin. seems like it vibrates too much after cutting into that pumpkin . how thick it is in its thickest part?
It’s a little under 1/4”... it’s not too thin. Swords vibrate when you hit something. Watch some videos of people cutting with historically accurate swords. Lots of flex
awesome work! hard to believe a leaf spring could ever look so perty. watching you slashing pumpkins i gotta say, try slashing at watermellons from horseback. when you can slice them clean through and leave the upper on the lower, you will be ready to fight the roman republic. well, according to the movie anyway.
You did a really good job, the sword turned out with a very clean looking finish. You'll have to show us that one if we can make it to the public market next year.
Liam you did a great job on the sword, it's beautiful. Why is it no matter how careful you are when you are tapping a hole it snaps off , have had it happen to me on many occasions. Thank you for your videos.
The sword is soo beautiful :))) Just some ideas for a new videos..I'd love to see you forge a a woodworking chisel(something like those old 18th century firmer chisels) or some woodworking drill bits (centre bits/spoon bits/augers)... maybe even a bit brace.. :))
I would love to start forging/sword smithing, are most vehicle leaf springs 5160 that you can get from a junk yard? I love functional Greek, Roman, and viking style swords
In theory most older springs are 5160, I haven’t gotten consistent results using leaf spring. The worse issue is with sonetging that gets constantly stressed like a vehicle leaf spring it can have a lot of stress or even fractures in it. New steel isn’t all that expensive, I’d just pick up a known steel in a convenient size. It’ll save you time and work. That being said you can totally make cool things from reclaimed springs and they can be a great way to practice
Very nice man! Freaking groovy really, with that light of a blade and the pommel nut size I bet it balances very close to the guard. And it’s a threaded pommel, just in case you need to end them rightly.
Was that the sound of taps snapping? Dunno if you've already fixed that problem, but some Tap Magic and a tapping guide should save you some money and frustration.
Dude....Broke the tap, what a bummer. I know because the sound is a familiar one to me. Wonder if anyone else caught that? Got to say your work is good, really good. I'm sure you know, that what you made is called a small sword, they have one on Game of Thrones. I like the bees wax thing, leaves a very unique finish. Great job, turn the tap back a little more than you do, you turn it backwards to clear the chip as you cut the threads, you'll feel the chip as you turn the tap backwards and with small taps don't try to go more than a full turn or turn and a half before you clear your chip. The best taps are the cnc taps, they make the ship travel up the tap and come out the top so you don't have to clear the tap. Sorry.....rambling on. Again beautiful sword......
i am currently making my second ever forged sword. i finnished the forging a few days ago and i'm trying to find some time to start grinding it. i'm making geralt's V guard, double wolf head pommel silver sword(i don't know its actual name) from the witcher 3 game, so i have a lot of work to do. but it's nice to see someone else also making a sword.
Very nice Video. Also a good sword/dagger. But I think you could have made the pommel a little bit smaller.....for such a light and relatively short blade you don't want such a massive counter weight, because it drives the balance too far back which leads to a sword that is unable to deliver a powerful cut. Also it makes for an overall heavier sword.
@@LiamJPenn OK. Then I overestimated the size of the pommel. 4" in front of the guard is ideal for this type of blade. And yes, you're right it is more of a thrusting sword. My intention also was to tell you this for a different, future project.
Wow awesome sword! I’m brand new to the craft and have obtained a bunch of leaf spring, can’t wait to mess around with it. Can I ask what that tool was you used that fit into the hardy hole?

Great work on the sword. The pumpkins didn't stand a chance
Excellent work bud. Really crisp hollow grinds.
Thank you!
Oh, great to see you here! Big fan.
@@LiamJPenn can you make the sword of Achilles from the movie Troy

Love it. Your work is awesome. First time
and you nailed it 👏 👌. Thanks for the video
Congratulations sir! This Is really a nice sword project.
Great video. I’m blowing the cobwebs off of
my forges and getting back to work. I’m going to tackle a sword. Thanks for the inspiration.
Awesome!
I really like it, it's like some kind of arming sword/smallsword hybrid.
That's a very nice sword.
Remarkable sword for your first one! Well done!
Excellent and neat work

Well done, great little sword there. Do you have a web site?
I saw that tap breaking from a mile away hehe. Maybe cause I’ve done the same thing a few times myself :p impatience gets the best of us
Haha yeah it was bound to happen
epic build man , how'd you temper it please

Keep it dry when possible and oil it occasionally

hello, how do you prevent spring leaf steel from rusting?
Keep it dry and oil it every once in a while. Same as any carbon steel
@@LiamJPenn thanks for answer sir
How do you temper this long blade?
It just barely fit in my oven
What does the beeswax do to the metal?
Protects it from rust and gives a nice finish

我认为你锻剑的方法是非常接近中国古代造剑的方法。(I think your method of forging swords is very close to the method of making swords in ancient China. )
5160 spring steel is great metal to build swords if don't burn all the carbon out of it by overheating it
If you hadn't stated this was your first sword, there's absolutely no way I'd believe you judging from the finished product.
Thank you
You look like John Gray from Outlander
