How to get a really matt finish on a model / miniature

For the first time I've found a matt varnish that is really... really... matt. And a small test of how it stands up to whatever other matt varnish I had lying around.

52 Miniatures - a channel for anyone (like me) new to Warhammer / new to the world of miniature painting. I am by no means an expert, on the contrary. These videos are a collection of my own initial miniature experiences. If you are a beginner or, like me, old and starting out again i hope these videos might be of inspirational use.

Additions / Recommendations from viewers):
Vallejo Acrylic Matt Varnish (rattle can) - I use this regularly for tabletop, i.e. it doesnt scratch as easily as W&N
AK Interactive Ultra Matt Varnish (airbrush / brush on)
Winsor and Newton Galeria Matt Varnish (brush on)
AK Interactive Ultra Matt Varnish is great! And works perfectly fine applied with a brush in my opinion.
Ak ultra matte is my favourite product here. You just need to make sure you give it a long enough shake for the opaque part at the bottom to be dispersed through the translucent part.
Vallejo Acrylic Matt Varnish seems to reactivate The Army Painter Speedpaints even 2 weeks later.
I started using the Windsor & Newton matt varnish a few years ago. It's really good, but it does dull metallics slightly. Mind you, I've used other varnishes in the past which have killed the metallics... and everything else.

I paint action figures, not miniatures; but now I’m a subscriber.
The effect you had with the vallejo is stange: i can assure you it’s really matte. Try adding an agitator and shake it like hell, vallejo matt varnish tends to come out shiny if not well mixed before each application
Okay! I’ve been using it a lot since, not as final finish, but in between different layers of paint and stuff like that.. still don’t get it really matte. And I’ve put a metal ball in it and all.
I have the same thing with vallejo, ssems to happen when you get an old bottle. The bottle before the current one gave me a nice matte finish, my new one makes it more shiny......
i tried it today and it came out super glossy. i shook the bottle til my arm got tired then i used my other arm and shook it some more; still glossy after 3 applications. it's a shame since i really like vallejo's other products i've tried :/

@@miltkalafas6443 same. Even applied with an airbrush its glossy..
Try this. Take your Vallejo matt and put a bit in a pallet . Get some Tamiya flat base and add to the Valejo. Gives a great matt finish and as a side effect, thins the varnish down. Dries with no brush marks . brush you don't need a lot of flat base either.

Thanks Bob. Since this video, I've tried more varnishes. I've got to say the AK Interactive Ultra Matte Varnish is a winner as of right now.
Painted up my first base (Martian base) and the washes turned it reeeeally shiny almost like mud. Hope a matte varnish can help there. Thanks for your video and the additional comment!
I always varnish my minis. For just the reason you mentioned, getting all the different paints to look coherent. But also, for protection. The table top can be a rough place.
I repaint vinyl dolls and you cannot beat Winsor and Newton spray and it’s relatively inexpensive compared to other matte sprays favorited by the repaint community like Testor’s or Mr. Super Clear.
I make little spaceship models for green screen special effects filming and glossy ships is always a nightmare. Good find and thank you.
Try AK Interactive or Ammo by Mig Ultra matte varnishes if you have access to an airbrush.
The minis look great, I'm always looking for a way to finish a model and protect it so this video was a fun find!
Thank you. I’m really satisfied with the W&N rattle can, it has turned out great every time (apart from that one time my son helped and forgot to stop spraying...) I have been trying to keep an updated list of other Matt varnishes that viewers have recommended. It should be pinned to the top in the comments. If you want to experiment :)

Thanks! The Windsor & Newton rattle can does spray quite intensely - so take it a bit easy the first time you try. And beware of the fumes :)
For your subscribers that do have airbrushes, Tamiya do a product called “Flat base”. It’s almost cloudy. If you add a few drops to any color, it makes it super dull. When I use a few drops with Tamiya’s flat clear, the result is incredible. Clothes on figures look as dull as real life.
I’m sure you could mix it in and use it for brush painting too.
Well thanks Martin! Sounds nice. So, you mix it in with the paint? Have you tried using it purely as a varnish?
@@52Miniatures I wouldn’t use it on it’s own, because it will leave a white residue, that’s why it’s important just to use a few drops. It’s super powerful stuff!

Bummer you can’t get Testors, that is what I use. I do keep a bottle of Vallejo gloss varnish for just the reasons you mentioned. Great video!
Yeah, there has not been any dull coat around for quite some time. Glad I found this stuff!
I just found this video because I've been looking for a good Matte varnish. I've been hearing great things about the Army Painter Anti-Shine spray but haven't been able to test it yet. The one I've had amazing results with has been the Daler Rowney Soluble Matt Varnish for Acrylic Colour. Just something to try. The only reason I'm not using it for the current project I'm working on is because of available space and the size of the project. Using a spray can in this particular situation will just be more efficient for me.
The Winsor & Newton is superbly matte... but not awesome for handling protection. So works well for display pieces but maybe not great for things that go on the table. Recently for tabletop stuff I’ve been using Vallejo acrylic matte varnish (rattlecan). Not as super matte as W&N but there nothing shiny going on.
@@52Miniatures they have a rattlecan? I've never seen that from vallejo before. Do you have a link so I can try ordering it and testing it out? I just tried searching on google and only found their little airbrush bottles.

@@52Miniatures seriously thank you. Now to see if I can find it near me but I should be able to get the local gaming shop to order me some.
Be careful with application. Once I sort of forgot what I was doing at one point and just sprayed on to much. Happens easily with rattle cans for me. And the puddles where not pleasant.
You know, most of my paints are vallejo, and of those most of my primary colors say "flat" before them.
Flat Red.
Flat Yellow.
Flat Blue. Etc.
They are so matte, it's almost painful to me how matte they are. I actually went and bought gloss medium and put it in a dropper about 50/50 with water and a drop of dish liquid to make a glossifying mixing medium.
Anyway. I like that finish on the vallejo matte varnish.

I hear you. I’m after the kind of matte surface that makes your mouth dry by looking at it. Got a new varnish on the way that I want to try out, get the feeling this video will need a sibling soon

The best matt varnish is Testors Dullcote without question. The best on the market by far. Not sure if available in Europe though.
Yeah, and no. It's not been available in Sweden at least for quite some time. It's probably some chemical in it that is not allowed over here. A lot of people swear by Ak Interactive ultra matte as well. That also is difficult to get a hold of here. I've got something coming in the mail, a relatively new brand, that I'm exited to try out. If that works out there will be a video about it.

@@getoutside9854 Here is another brand you can try that is similiar to Testors - Krylon Low Odour Clear Finish Matte. You can find it at Walmart for half the price.
Bought Vallejo matt varnish - has a satin finish, not a pure matt.
Bought Windsor and Newton matt varnish - horrible gloss coating.
Both tried and tested with straight out of the bottle, also shaken. Purchasing AK interactive to see if it will give me a proper matt finish for once.
You can also look at Ammo By Mig, also Scalecolour and Proacryl are soon releasing matte varnishes.
Not sure if you read comments on older videos but I was wondering if you ever used the vallejo matte varnish out of an airbrush? I had the same result as you when brushing it on, but thinned with water and put through an airbrush, the difference is astounding. It really does have a very matte finish.
I’m not sure I have tried it through an airbrush. I’ll have to give it a try. Thanks for the tip!
Given that it's been a while since you made this video, do you have any comments to make on matte varnishes now? How does the Vallejo spray varnish compare to the Winsor & Newton in terms of how matte it is? Have you found anything that gets very matte results but doesn't scratch off with handling? Speaking of, how does the W&N spray stand up to semi-regular handling of miniatures?
The W&N is the prettiest, but does not handle ware well. Great for display but not tabletop. The Vallejo spray takes more of a beating but puddles up real easy in white frosty puddles. At the moment I cover everything with a Vallejo Polyurethane Matt Varnish, it goes very well through the airbrush. But it’s not matte matte.. so once that dries I dust lightly with the Vallejo rattle-can. The result is a well protected mini with a very matte appearance.
I'm painting a 1/16 scale figure and wondering if a matt finish works well with skin

dull coat they call it... testors can... its matt as i have seen... like beautiful
I use Winsor and Newton Galeria matt varnish, Testors Dullcote and Alclad Aquagloss...my 3 regular varnishes. Tried many matts, had a lot of problems with frosting with AK Ultra Matt so ended up on the Galeria stuff which for me, consistently does not frost. Shame you cant get Dullcote....its the bomb
Hey Dave, thanks for the tip. Yes I hear good things about the Dullcoat but I must say the W&N Professional Matt I tested in the video is so matt that I'm not to sad about missing out on Dullcoat. Is the Galeria in a rattle can or paint on?
@@52Miniatures I use it for brush and airbrush...thins nicely with water or good thinners..they also do a UV protection one which again is good. Quality products from W & N 👍I only really use Dullcote as a protective layer over acrylics before any oil based paint work as I do weathered scale models too

Not really, not for tabletop - “woops sorry, didn’t see your mini there.. do you want to borrow my superglue” type action. What I’ve been doing lately is varnish with a more protective varnish first, something a bit on the shiny side, and then matte that down with the W&N or Vallejo matte varnish (in a rattle can) for the look of things.

What about the Citadel Games Workshop rattle can matt varnish?
Never tried actually. Since I buy most of my minis from GW I try to buy all the other stuff from other manufacturers. If it would be super matte... then of course I would buy it, but the super matte niche is very limited and I think GW's would have popped up on my radar if it was truly matte. The thing with super matte varnishes is that puddles tend to dry into something that looks like frost. So when using the very matte varnishes, its quite important to be very precise, too much varnish on there and you can get cloudy / frosty puddles. Most GW products tend to be very user friendly, so I'd guess that they would not release a product that requires as much precision.
@@52Miniatures GW is more of a satin finish anyways, not matte like you (or I!) want.
Have you ever used Vallejo polyurethane vanish? What do you think of it if so?
I’m using it at the moment because it shoots nicely through the airbrush. It’s not my kind of matte though... like a lot of matte varnishes out there, that I would like to be called “sort of matte”. What I do is I use the polyurethane first to get a nice layer for protection purposes - after that has dried I use Vallejos acrylic matte varnish (in a rattle can) and dust lightly with that for the super matte effect. The stuff in the rattle can is truly super matte but also very difficult to get evenly on the mini without puddles that dry frosty... so just dusting with it (and not having to rely on it for protection) on top of another varnish is the best solution I have for a super matte finish at the moment.
@@52Miniatures Yes I have their satin and it is incredibly glossy! Ive gone from can spraying to brush on after GW varnish frosted a few minis, very frustrating. How many layers do you apply? Its very hard to judge how much is enough. Thanks for the detailed reply!
I just go with the one pretty solid layer with the airbrush. It says on the bottle to repeat twice... but I figure since I'm going over with the other one on top... one should be enough. I'm sure there is solutions to fixing frosted varnish... just haven't researched it yet.

Hello, when I want to put wheatering on my tankmodels; should I apply a matt varnish as the last step ?
Depends on what type of weathering you are going to do. And when you mean "last step" do you mean before or after the weathering?

@@bostonkazi901 depends on what you mean by weathering. Painting on rust? streaks? pigment powders? The only reason to weather before I gues, is if you are using oil based paints... or something like that. Or if you varnish your mini matte and you want the weathering to look glossy, like if its wet or something..
