As I watch this over and over I can't help but admire Terri more and more. Her reactions as the final results were read were so genuine. I think she knew Kentucky botched the final answer so that was not a surprise. I believe, after that, she honestly thought she was going to be the next to go. When Ohio's name was called next, notice Terri's reaction....she rolled her eyes as if to say...."I can't believe it....she was the front runner....". Then when Utah's name was called next, Terri seemed to become more incredulous because she and Texas were the remaining two. She honestly didn't think she'd get that far. When the final moment comes up, Terri can barely breathe because she won't allow herself to think that she actually won it. Texas thought she had it in the bag and when the announcement of the first runner up was made, Terri's reaction was one of shock and incredulity. She honestly never believed she would win and when she did...her reaction was priceless because she truly wasn't expecting it. Just a beautiful moment from an era when the pageants were classy, hosted by the best, Bob Barker, and the girls were classy ....not the over-hyped bimbos of today. If only the Miss Universe organization would,Ho back to this format.

For those wondering what happened with Ohio who was first in the semifinals. Watch the question and answer segment in the isolation booth. The question was , "if you, as Miss USA, traveled the nation, what is the one subject you would choose and what would you tell them?" The contestants had to show poise, sincerity and a direct, simple response that clearly answered the question. The key word in the question was "One Subject". The judges should have ranked the girls this way: They got it right with Kentucky as 4th runner up. Kentucky was suffering with a bad case of nerves all evening and she froze and it was all over for her. She lost her poise and composure. Besides which, she was a big boned gal who was built like an Amazon and had harsh features. When she finally got the answer out, she was fine but it was too little too late. They also got it right placing Ohio as 3rd runner up. The question was ONE SUBJECT. She gave a typical pageant patty answer and was technically, not answered. She said be pleasant, considerate and above all happy. Fine qualities indeed, but instead of focusing on ONE SUBJECt, she named three and she probably would have done better if she had summarized the three things she mentioned in one subject like the importance of being a personable individual....that is having a great personality. If she would have said something like, "I would speak to them about being personable because when you're personable, you will attract people with the qualities of being pleasant, and considerate which will result in true happiness because the impression you make being personable will bring forth your fine qualities. Then I would have given Texas the 2nd runner up spot because while she did mention One Subject, she articulated it in such a way that made her look dumb. Etiquette??? If she would have said, "I think I could best talk to them about having good manners. Being polite and knowing how to carry yourself with class is a trait that leaves a lasting impression on people." If she had stated it in such a way, she would have maybe even won but she came off flaky and ditzy with her sing song voice with such poor wording on her subject. Then I would have given Miss Utah the 1st runner up position. She gave a well thought out answer and articulated it perfectly. The thing about her, though, was that she wasn't very pretty....she was nice ....yes....very sweet....but she also had harsh features and her hair was a mess. Now, Terri, Miss Arkansas, was simple and direct with her response. She was totally sincere, devoid of pretension and did not come off as flaky, arrogant or affected....she named ONE SUBJECT....honesty and with her soft spoken delivery, you believed her because she believed in what she was saying. She was the most natural out of the five....the most poised, the most direct and simple response that clearly answered the question! And she put it over with such charm that was undeniable! A true queen....regal, poised and honest!!!
I agree with you. I thought Ohio or Texas had it in the bag up until the end. Ohio was beautiful, but flubbed the final question badly by not listening to it and spouting 3 things instead of 1. Texas was drop dead gorgeous. However, she gave a garbled and grammatically challenged response. She delivered it in an annoyingly whiny voice that cost her the crown. Arkansas was the best choice and deserved the crown....
Good points for sure, but....Miss Ohio was simply so beautiful it was preposterous not to give it to her. And let's face it....there have been many winners of Miss USA and Miss Universe who won, but still somewhat flubbed their answer in the final question. Miss Ohio was robbed.
What I hate the most is that Miss USA '81 and many other former queens, seems to be tired of reigning and just put the crown on their successor's head and they don't give a crap about it. It is indeed a very emotional moment, and Miss Utley, to my taste one of the most beautiful miss USA ever. She has a resemblance to Lady Diana.

I never tire of watching this moment. Terri is the most unique and lovely beauty queen. She broke the mold. Also, who is the cute marine at 7:12 who is third from the right. He has a great smile and he is very happy that Terri won. That guy makes my heart throb. This was a pageant with class ....bring back the military and make the Miss USA pageant like this again...with real women, classy production and the military with a patriotic theme. I don't know why you state it's an all time low....every pageant after Donald Trump took over qualifies as the lowest of the lows...if we had more winners like Terri and more productions like this, the class would return to the pageant and the ratings, which have dive bombed with Trump, would sky rocket!
