I can't help but feel badly for the 1st-runner up. The disappointment must be crushing, yet she still has to pretend she is thrilled for the winner. And then someone steps up and quickly escorts her off the stage and into obscurity, haunted by thoughts of what might-have-been. The only real consolation is taking over as Miss USA if the reigning Miss USA happens to be crowned Miss Universe. But even then, they don't get to experience that thrill of victory that comes with being crowned at the actual pageant. Yes, Halle Berry still became famous despite being 1st-runner up, but that appears to be the exception to the rule.

1990 1st runner-up South Carolina - Gina Tolleson went on to win Miss World 1990.
They wouldn't announce it because in essence, Miss World is a competitive organization. It's all about the ratings and media coverage.
Yesteryear's winners outshine today's women: Hitchcock, Shelton, Jones, Anderson, Weatherly, Hayek, Fichtner, Gist.
