      sbrebrown Thank you ! I've been watching your videos since last summer holidays and yesterday I was watching this video like 15th time and I looked at my old Parker Vector ( it's a combination of 3 Parker Vectors I've found in my room) and I decided it's time to buy something new. Today I was hesitating between Kaweco sport and Lamy Safari, to finally order Lamy Safari with medium nib ( no broad nibs in stock unfortunately, which I really like , but I hope M will be fine for me ;) ) I can't wait to try it out :)

    • @peterpuleo2904
      @peterpuleo2904 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      czym92 FYI, I have a Lamy Safari with a broad nib and it is a real disappointment. Usually I prefer broad or stub nibs but the Lamy skips, dries out, etc.

    • @czym92
      @czym92 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peter Puleo what kind of ink are you using in it? I filled my Lamy with pelikan's ink ( brilliant black ) and it is a wonderful experiance. I had been using parker vector for 15 years ( once even with hero ink....gosh ). Lamy with pelinkan ink suits my needs perfectly,
      Try to clean your pen with fresh water, try to fill it with different inks and check videos on this channel :how to make your nib wetter etc., Stephen is giving a good piece of advice there :)

    • @peterpuleo2904
      @peterpuleo2904 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      czym92 I used the Lamy cartridge in black. It writes quite wet when it writes, but skips and dries after a few sentences. I will try a good cleaning again but I think I would better served with a new nib. Thank you!

I really got into fountain pens at the time and I watched this channel and im glad to see your videos still up because they still have meaning to me. Just think about it, your videos hold an important significance to some random strangers life still years on.

    Totally off topic, but....i've developed a great fondness for your ink dyed towel! The colours are beautiful, and it makes a gorgeous setting for the pens. It's a bit like an old farmer's hands - years of work are worn with pride. It's very fitting for someone who loves demonstrators, so i hope you don't retire it or replace it with a newer one.

    Perhaps the title should be "greatest currently marketed". Greatest all-time should include the Parker 51, Parker Vacumatic, the original Duofold, probably the Parker 75 Ciselle, the Sheaffer Balance and several Sheaffer Triumph and inlaid nibbed pens (say, Snorkel and PfM), Eversharp Skyline, the Onoto Magna (vintage). I'm selecting for technological innovation, historical importance and influence, and pure beauty. Rather than the M1000, maybe an earlier Pelikan like the 400NN or the 140: the smaller piston-fillers that Pelikan made roughly 1950 - 1965. (Of your "GOAT" pens, my all-time list would include only the traditional "makralon" Lamy 2000 and either of the MontBlanc cigar-shaped piston-fillers...146 or 149)

    My first fountain was a 30 pence superdrug own one, they're a UK based cosmetics retailer. I must have been 8-9 years old and I was so excited, I guess I was a strange kid. I wanted books and pens but I never got them. I literally ran home with my mother in tow telling me how it would be broken by tomorrow and other crap. I got home and just wrote for hours, copying anything from TV guides. I had that pen up until I was 27 but then my dog ate it.
    I have a lot of pens but nothing great, I think the best is probably a cross I found on a train. I will probably start off with a cheapo like #20 from your list. I do have a calligraphy set but the nibs are very rough, it's a cheap set. Probably watch your nib smoothing clip.

    One pen that I think you should absoutely try, is the Baoer 801. It's a slim, neat little Chinese pen. Very similar to Parker Vector. But slightly slimmer. And in terms of quality and precision, it's a Vector on stereoids. Lots of stereoids. It's extremely well sealed, can lie around unused for many months. Only available in fine point, but out of the box, it's the smoothest, stiff, fine point I've experienced. IMO, a much more remarkable Chinese pen than X450.

    Hi Stephen, Love your list, especially like seeing the Laban on there they bare beautiful pens and I also own a 580 and an E-Motion in Pearwood. It surprises me though creating a list of all time great fountain pens without some Vintage pens like the Parker 51, Sheaffer Balance or Snorkle?PFM and you like large pens I would think you would really enjoy writing with an Oversize Balance, great video though!!!

    I am not owning all the pens in the list but I can confirm the Omas 360. It has the perfectly balanced medium nib I have ever seen: Superbly wet without being a gusher, the right amount of flex, slightly thicker medium than usually, smooth with the right amount of feedback... I do not know how they did it, but it is one of a kind. The best purchase I have ever made.
    I wish I could say the same thing about the FC eMotion. Had two of them. Loved the design, loved the bold nib, loved it's wetness, but both had the same issue; the feed ran dry.
    Edison? Good pen. Beautiful design, big size, perfect handling... Does not wow me but it is enjoyable and the ink reserve is perfect for long trips. As is the Dolcevita Oversize.
    BTW, the Italix Viper Strike turns out to get better the more I use it! ;-)

    I was surprised to not see any Sailor there. Personally, I love Sailor's pens. And I just keep buying them. If I try to be 'objective', and weighting in things like reliable, practical, and maintenane, I'd say Pelikan and Sailor makes the 'best' pens.
    More subjectively, I' hold up a torch to Ahab+Goulet nib and Ebonite Konrad+Goulet nib, as well. Provided they're well set and tuned, of course.

    I've tried most of the brands mentioned in this video and in the end kept 2 series for collection: the Parker 75 premier and Pelikan M800. They are both beautiful, practical and easy to collect in the beginning, while keeps a very high difficulty to complete.

    Nice. The actual pens might be subject to personal preferences but the compared writing samples all together on one page is quite educating. Strange idea: maybe someone with a nice hand could make a similar page to demonstrate and closely compare what all these different nibs, sizes, materials and shapes do exactly. Just for fun...

    There is a possibility that we have one or maybe two in common. I would have few cheap or modern pens. Maybe the clear Sheaffer $1 cartridge pen fine point from the early 1960s. Most of mine would be older. The Parker 51, the Sheaffer Snorkel, Eversharp Doric, Onoto, Waterman Patrician, Conklin Crescent, Parker Duofold, Dunn, Platinum 3776, Some kind of eyedropper and safety pen. Maybe a Ratnam. A Vacumatic. I guess I'm really strange. Large Mabie Todd Swan (Eterna?).

    My experience with fountain pens would include my use of the Sheaffer School Transparent series (quite good and reliable); Sheaffer Imperial, Crest, & Snorkel. Then the Parker 75 Ciselé, 51, 61, 21, & 25; Followed by the 1997 Waterman Edson & Carene (more affordable then). Finally the Vac 700 and the Visconti Opera Elements & Crystal Mosquitoe. Smoothest nib goes to my vacuumatic Parker 51 with superbroad nib.

    My favourite nib is the Broad though I'll have to try a double broad if I can find one.

    Magnificent pens and a great video.But there was no review of the GOAT PEN. Tell me honestly Mr.Brown how many pens do you own? I watch a lot of your reviews and I must say the way you present them is awesome.Good work, Keep it up! Regards Swaminathan

    Nice vid. And it was nice to see the Lamy Safari make it as a GOAT pen. My go-to pen is currently the TWSBI Diamond 580, but I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for the Safari/Vista/Al-Star because the Vista was the first fountain pen to catch my eye and pique my interest in fountain pens in general. :)

    Stephen - love this video. It reminded me to review my want list, so I bought the Italix Churchman's Prescriptor and the Laban Scepter (Tiger Tornado). Not only two of the greatest names ever assigned to pens, but also wonderful writers for the money - just awesome. I can't believe I waited as long as I did to buy them. Hope you might consider doing a second GOAT Pens video for your next 20 favorites! Thanks again.

    Pelikan M600, M800, Montblanc 146 and smaller 145 w/only OM or Broad nibs, Platinum 3376, Sailor Full Sized 1911, mid sized 1911 and pro gear. Any visconti with a dream touch nib, Delta Momo Dolce vita with titanium nib, Caran Dash have the only steal pens I like and only broad Faber Castell steal nibs are worth your time out of the box. Lamy's need some tuning. Hand tuned Edison signature line pens.
    that's my list..
    Retro Waterman ideal #2 and many Marbie Todd Swan models and Eversharp

    i know very little about pens, but I know a good one when I can't stop scrolling across the paper. i like them springy and juicy with just the right amount of sharpness. my only annoyance is being left-handed. thanks for an informative video. this is what youtube is about.

      +sbrebrown This actually brought up an interesting point, if you've noticed I've asked a lot of questions recently since I'm getting into fountain pens. I am also left handed and have noticed there are some fountain pens specifically described as left handed. Do you know anyone who is left handed who prefers these,(the 2 pens I own are not left handed specifically but they work just fine for me)?

    Great video, as always, but - and I know this is personal - I'm more than a little surprised that there isn't a single ST Dupont pen in there.... they may be costly but they can be fabulous. Definitely worth checking out. Still, I don't own any of the pens in your list so what do I know? :-) (I do have a Pelikan M800 - but all of my Duponts get the nod over this great pen)

    Sorry for the unrelated comment, but every time I saw your blue/inked towel, it always reminded me of Monster Inc.'s Sullivan. No harm in wanting to know whether you have a spin-off episode that shows a time-lapse of the towel from clear white to this colorfull (however colorful it is in 2018) 😁

    Very informative thank you. An improvement on such a time invested video would be to have the name of each of the pens come up to show what it is in the correct spelling. I did get some of my own corrections in the end when the demonstration was conducted but there were a few pronunciations that got by. Excellent job Stephen, thank you for your hard work!

    What a lovely selection of pens. I would have included a Parker 75 but I'm a bit partial to the brand. I carry my 1972 P-75 and a Parkette every day - and yes a 51 too. Will you tell me about the wonderful green ink in the Opera Crystal?

    By the way Laban still make and sell the Scepter and all the finishes that come with them. I also bought a Scepter Tiger Tornado a few years ago and recently ordered another one and two other Scepter finishes as gifts from their Asian distributor. The nibs are great, I highly recommend you get another, the white electric finish and the red electric finish are beautiful. They also have a finish that is identical to your CS Model 100
    Great video, loved your thoughts on the best of the best:):)
