    Just watched this for the first time.
    It is actually a very useful and efficient comparison of many interesting pens, nibs and inks, with the right amount of interesting context for each.
    Much appreciated.

    I have 2 146s and buy and sell fountain pens all the time. However, my absolute favourite and perfect pen is my mothers pelikan m150, the plating is coming off, it has a large scratch, the clip is bent and it says "made in w-Germany" on the band. I love this pen more than anything and would chose it over my 146s any time. I can relate to your grandfathers pen there.

    Another great video, I've been watching you for a number of years now. I just wanted to say thank you for all the information I have learned from you. 4 years ago when I was a little 16 year old boy I had been watching your videos for a couple of years and had developed a great interest and knowledge base of fine writing instruments. Thanks to what I had learned from you I managed to get myself a job at my local branch of The Pen Shop in the UK where I have been working for the last 4 years. So, keep up the good work and thank you for all the time and effort that you put in these videos.

    • @96TAWhite
      @96TAWhite 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Angelo Yeah it's been a dream job for me, I've been doing it alongside 6th form and university for a while and I truly believe that the only reason I got the job is because of the knowledge I got from Stephen so I am endlessly grateful. Setting up my own pen shop would be the ideal thing for me if I was to set up my own business well in the future. And good luck to you if you do end up making a go of it yourself.

    • @96TAWhite

      If you have lots of free time you would maybe consider getting a part time job in an existing store if there is one close enough to commute to in order to gain valuable market data, or failing that visiting lots of existing stores if you are serious about going for it at any point.
      An easy way to start would be to set up a web store which is very easy and get a few small brands on your site to see what reception you get and then grow from there, a store comes to mind as using this technique is MrPen where he brand Italix is sold from (ironically is was me that suggested the Parson's essensial to Stephen several years ago and it seems he's still enjoying it). I would definitely also want to get brands that are not sold as much in the UK but are popular in the community, for example TWSBI. And one advantage you have above brick and mortar stores is a knowledge of the community which in my experience some companies can lack.

    • @96TAWhite

      Angelo it seems that high end Pens and Audio equipment go hand in hand as I myself am also developing an interest in higher end audio. Although I feel like our knowledge base is reversed as I know infinitely more about pens than audio.
      It's interesting to see the overlaps between different hobbies, as a lover of the outdoors and cool equipment (edc gear) its also interesting to see that Stephen has also done videos on that too.

    • @GlennHigley
      @GlennHigley 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm also a lover of fine audio and am not surprised at the overlap with fountain pens. Both are based on the desire to enjoy the best that life has to offer in the short time that we're here. Enjoy your fine pens and the finest in music reproduction.

    I love the story of your final two pens. And it's something we have in common. One of my "inspirations" for becoming a fountain pen fan is a pen I inherited. Mine was my father's EDC (front shirt pocket as long as I can remember) - a Parker 75 sterling silver cisle with a 14k B nib adjusted for a "lefty". I'm right handed, but I can't bring myself to change the nib/grip orientation- just makes me remember him every time I use it. Thanks for the eye candy!

    Thank you for the Xmas video. I have learned from you. Newbie to the real thing although I still have my school pens in which there is a little collector interest. Spares available. One from 1930's is a Conklin given to me by an aunt and yes you're so right, it reminds me of her. I dug them out only recently. I am still learning, what is good - what s bad etc. Managed to get them all working quite cheaply. Fascinating; but my writing hand is only so so. I have purchased quite a few very cheap pens to experiment with. No loss if I break them. Tuning is interesting and I thank you for that video as well. Your enthusiasm is infectious and I am taking notes of your favourite makes, just as a guide. It may seem a bit cranky but that's me always. I'm good at cranky! All my Xmas cards were written with fountain pens this year. First time for near to 60 years. Hey! - see the date, - what am I doing watching you? That's your allure. You and your pens. Fascinating. Thank you and Happy Xmas! Berry G.

    In art school I had this professor who, when someone would start by saying "in my opinion...," would interject with "of course it's your opinion, if you're saying it it is obviously your opinion; no one here is speaking absolute truths."
    In keeping with that tone, I appreciate your GOAT videos and I don't watch them expecting purely objective empirical fact. Actually I think in certain cases someone's somewhat subjective opinion based upon experience and preference can give a more informative view. Thanks for sharing your findings and insights!
    I must ask though, god forbid something ever happened to your Opera Elements, what do you think might be it's successor?

    Stephen, I always enjoy your end of year top 10. This year (perhaps not for the first time,) your list really stands apart from others in that it feels very 'nibbish.' (NOT to be confused with nebbish. LOL.) Your handwriting especially with the italics and stubs, is lovely and I can see how the MB ink shades beautifully with the broader/wetter nibs. (The superb Etruria, Carbon Dream and Yard-o-led especially.) This video makes me focus on the fact that nib size choice does affect personal preference and that any one pen may seem ho-hum with one nib but not another, so to try a number when considering a purchase may be ideal. A lot depends on personal writing style too. Not everyone's handwriting is enhanced by the extra flourish a stub or italic offers (for instance, mine is more printing than script and my taste runs more towards the pragmatic, so round nibs suit me better than italics.)
    Even so, it's great fun to see what broader, wetter nibs can add and it's easy to see why you gravitate to them. Thanks for the great video!

      Michele Harvey Absolutely! I have a few pens that are not that spectacular in looks, but that are wonderful in writing quality. I think this represents beauty, just like with people: we may not all be stunners on the outside, but real beauty is on the inside.

    Hi Stephen,
    nice to see that your channel is growing significantly and you're putting out new stuff quite often.
    I took your advice couple years ago when I wanted to get my first fountain pen (Sheaffer 100) and since then I have acquired quite a few mid range pens including Cross Centuries, Bailey, Parsons Essential, Sailor 1911S, Pilot Custom 74, TWSBI Eco, Diamond Mini, a few Gamas etc.
    I just had a question: I am looking to buy a more "higher end" pen, and currently my most valuable pens are Pilot Custom 74 and Sailor 1911S (I know, nothing too fancy but I LOVE that Sailor fine nib). I think I want to spend around £200 or less but I want the most bang for my buck. Ideally I would have liked a Pelikan M800 if it was cheaper but I'm conscious of the price tag. I prefer something girthy, similar to how you like it ;)
    Would appreciate any thoughts/recommendations!
    Thanks
    Rabi

    Hi Stephen! Is there any chance you could provide links for each of the pens in this list? I'm new to the hobby and would love to learn more about some of these pens, including where I can buy the pens you're mentioning. Thanks for all that you do!

      Gregg S No, I'm sorry, I don't currently have time for that. Google will help you find each of these pens though.

      sbrebrown Could you at least give us a list of the pen manufacturer and model names?

    Hey Stephen. Loved your video. Absolutely love your channel. Thank You. I'm a student in In England (so limited pen buying funds) and i love using fountain pens for my works. My pen style is a bit similar to yours. I started with Lamy Safari and Metropolitan. The most expensive pen I have right now is a Parker Sonnet (nothing fancy i know, but i adore it). I wanted to another pen. The two pen I'm considering are the Pelikan M205 aquamrine or the Edison Collier blue steel . I love Viscontis. Used a couple but are too expensive for me right now. Was wondering if you have any suggestions. Maybe a pen that has a bigger nib than the Sonnet. Thanks again.

      Ali Hyder Maybe an Italix Churchman's Prescriptor?

    • @alihyder6003
      @alihyder6003 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the suggestion. I love the look of the pen and it's got great reviews. However I'm confused about which nib to get in. I'd like to get a stub nib. I have fairly medium sized handwriting and sometimes get a filled e with my sonnet medium nib.

    • @sbrebrown
      @sbrebrown  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would try a stub, or maybe a fine italic then.

      Hey Stephen,
      Just got my Parson's Essential with a medium stub. I liked the look of it more than the Prescriptor. Love the pen. Though I am experiencing a few hard starts. I was wondering if in your experience, you think this is normal with stubs. Thanks

    • @sbrebrown
      @sbrebrown  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ali Hyder I think the issue with a stub is that it is more crucial to align it properly with the paper than is the case with a regular round nib.

    Have you seen a Visconti Art Ellenic fountain pen, 14kt Gold nib? Could you comment on the pen.
    ( Also, I think with a more readable simplified intro / outro and some more punchy titles you'd get a bigger audience ).

    Great video stephan! Thank you! I have a question for you; Is the hike in the price worth it to jump from a sailor kop to lb5? What are the reasons if yes or no? Thanks in advance

    • @sbrebrown
      @sbrebrown  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      LeFatalpotato For me, yes, because of the slightly longer barrel and the stunning material.

    • @LeFatalpotato
      @LeFatalpotato 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      sbrebrown thx for the answer sir but it's really a pain in the back to locate lb5s on the Internet and I like how the kops standard ebonite looks so for me it looks like the standard kop is the better choice

    To pronounce Kakadu how an Australian would it's more like this - KakaH-Du. We butcher the english language as good as anyone and love to add the "h" sound whenever possible. e.g. water is more like war-tah

    Hi, I would love to know who the Australian Ebay seller was where you got the Kakadu - Im Australian and hardly any brick and mortar stores sell Visconti and I did have my eye on the Kakadu.

      I hate to bug you about this but I have to wait for the pen to arrive as rozmenko is away on break. But I realise there is no information on warranty and we dont have access to a repair service to Visconti here in Australia. How do YOU deal with warranty issues if any when it comes to ebay?

    If you know what to write, and how, a use-and-throw is as good as a Mont Blanc. It always surprises me how the people who write nothing worth reading are the ones who obsess over decadent pen discussions. Feynman used to write with stub pencils... perhaps that is the point.
