This is so great! I’ve admired this dress but haven’t known how to recreate it. It’s so simple! Thank you for breaking it down for us and explaining it all. I’m going to make a few for a summer maternity wardrobe! Thank you Lauren!
Thank you for the video. I have made two shirred seersucker dresses this summer. I wore every night to go to bed! I made adjustable straps instead. Thanks again.❤
Hi found your videos! Great! I bought elastic thread, and I have a beautiful cotton fabric! Can't wait to get started! Love love the milkman dress! Thank you so much for tour educational video! So femine and pretty!
You're channel is so wonderful. I love your feminine style and calm personality and especially enjoy your videos showing you sewing dresses, planning your sewing projects and styling your hand made wardrobe! Can't wait for more video's
I made this dress and its so cute and easy to make, I have some hill house dresses and I was comparing them and I realized they use elastic on both ends for the shirring, is this something you can have a tutorial for. like their shirring is more dense and make this cute folds.
I made this dress in a digital printed linen fabric and it turned out really beautiful. Thank you for the idea. I really love the ruffled straps and the fact that it gives me a little fall over the shoulder.
Really cute - so sweet! I used to make dresses like this for my daughter when she was little and she loved them! I noticed your serger going for a 'walk' - I have a rubber mat under mine so that doesn't happen. It's an old office machine pad but I'm sure you could find something similar!
Thank you so much Heather! Yes, my serger has a bad habit of doing that! 😂 I have a non skid mat, but it's loosing it's non skid quality over time. I need to find something new!
I use the foam shelf liner that looks like open weave. Sorry for the poor description, but you can pick up for a couple dollars at Walmart or even a dollar from Dollar stores. Helps me so much.
Stunning dresses Lauren, and you have saved me so much time and effort because this one was on my list to do and likewise I had thought this wouldn't be too difficult to emulate with some tweaks and love your choice of fabric and tweaks with ruffles!.....can't wait to hit the sewing machine. Thank you for all your wonderful inspiration.
Hi Lauren... loads of thanks to you.. I made the dress for my daughter's birthday.. and she loved it. thanks for the tutorials. the measurement you have given was exactly matching with my daughters.. when I finished .... it was slightly tighter for her and hence I have to make another piece of the whole set and join it with this main piece. think the shirring was very close. or I didn't keep the thread tension right.
Ah, I love this so much more than the pattern I have. I think it's McCall's or something. The straps on this are way easier than the sleeves I was trying to do! It's been sitting in my closet for at least like 6 months unfinished cause I didn't want to try and fix the sleeves. 😂 I think I'm ready now.
This dress remind me of my teenage time. I had a lot of these styles outfits. I liked them so much, a special the ruffels. Thanks for sharing this tutorial, I will make my own dress now for the summer. 💞💞💞💯
Just a quick tip.... Put a rubber placemat or a towel under your serger so it doesn’t move around. Love your fabric selection. Cotton is my favorite fabric!!
Wow amazing design dress. I really like this video. Your cutting and stitching very beautiful. You are very talented sister 🙏🙏🙏 this is look very nice. May God bless you........... always 🙏✨😊💞💞💞😊✨🙏
These dresses are so cute! I recently shirred a top which I hadn't done shirring since high school, which is years ago. I may have to try a dress. Don't think I'll be brave enough to wear it in public (probably too old) but it would be nice and cool around the house.
Thank you so much Kathleen! They're definitely cool and comfortable for wearing around the house-- also look cute and a little toned down with a jacket! 💜
I’m also a sewist who can’t wait to make this just because it looks so fun , BUT knows better than to wear it in public, lol. I have some lovely vintage light cottons and lawns that will make comfy nighties for this Florida heat!
Hi! I love this dress and am excited to try it 😍 I’m currently pregnant and wondering if you think I should add more “ease” to the front/back pieces to allow more room for a bump? Or do you think the amount of gathering accounted for here will be good enough? I definitely will keep the waistline/stop the shirring a bit higher for pregnancy. Thanks!
Hi there. I think I could have a go at this but would love to know how to add sleeves ( think they are called Angel ?)so still have the straps over the shoulder but with the sleeves attached hiding bra strap .. hope that makes sense LOL. Thank you.
Both are adorable!! I'm desperately trying to find a way to sew in the loft of my tiny house. Has anyone ever had to sew with the machine on the floor? 😂 Beats paying $125 for a HH dress, though I love the look!
The Brother Project Runway line has a few models where the foot pedal is optional- great for us floor goblins with limited space! (I have the xr9550prw with a good 90 odd stitches I've never used, lol)
A great spring/summer dress I’d like to give this a go. I did notice however that the dress goes up slightly at the front hem . For a larger busted woman it will probably lift even further. This should be a consideration when cutting out don’t you think?
Great consideration Hazel! I tried the dress on to take a look, and I think the reason it is raising in front is actually that I have the neckline pulled up a bit! Theoretically as long as the measurements are based around the bust measurement it should still work!
I have a dress that quite big on me but i really like it tho. Thinking of fix it up. Im size 10 normally for stretchy material dresses but that dress i have is size 12. Do think able to fix it up? 🤔🤔 can anyone help? Its long midi day dress with spilt at bottom and i love it but unsure what to do
When I put my shirring thread in the bobbin, it just wouldn't smoothly come out of the bobbin case, even though I loosened the screw. Do you have any advice?
Hi Lauren, Beautiful make! So neat and I love the techniques! One thing that may help is to put a rubber drawer lining and then your serger on top to stop it from sliding. I used a dining place mat for my serger with a pretty design and it looks cute but a drawer or chest liner will also work (probably even better!). ❤️❤️
Can you please do a "by hand london shirred dress" tutorial? They have a free video on their feed but I cant follow it. I need a more visual tutorial thank you!
I am So frustrated. I have a singer 2277. I have tried all of your tips tricks videos. I’ve changed stitch length to 3-4, tension from 5 all way up to 9. Stretching flat as I sew , tightened and loosen bobbin casing, light weight fabric and still it is not working fabric shir is loose and or top thread popping ? Do you have any suggestions or does some machines just not shir?
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I have about the same bust measurement as you (about 33”) so I went ahead and just use the same measurements you provided in the example. But the dress turned out huge. The shirred part is so wide that it just can’t stay on my body. Shirring looks normal and I did use the iron to shrink it a little bit. But it’s still really big. The shirred part is 18.5” wide laying flat without being stretched. Do you know what I did wrong? Would really appreciate your input. Thank you!
Hi there, thank you so much for watching, and I'm sorry to hear about this issue! I just checked the measurement on one of my dresses, and it was 12.5" inches across. Did you use a similar lightweight fabric? I've learned from a few people on Instagram that if the fabric is a bit thicker, it won't gather quite as much! Another consideration could be the type of shirring elastic-- some of them aren't quite as stretchy as others which I've just learned! I use both Dritz and Guttermann, but prefer Dritz. I hope we can get it fixed-- let me know if this is helpful at all!
@@LaurenJohnson thank you so much for your reply! I did use a lightweight fabric, and the Dritz elastic thread. That’s interesting how much more shirred your bodices end up being! I also noticed on your DIY smocked summer top video, you used the width of 26.5” for the bodice versus 36” for this dress. Since they’re both a shirred bodice, I was wondering why the calculations are so much different? Is this dress supposed to be looser fitting than the smocked top? I was wondering maybe I should use around 26” width for this dress instead?
@@liaoclara320 Ohh great question! I chose the wider width on this one both because I wanted it to fit a bit looser, and because I wanted the skirt to have a more fullness. I think you could definitely use a smaller width, just keep in mind it will remove some fabric from the skirt!
@@LaurenJohnson I see. I think I will try maybe 30” then that way I don’t lose too much fullness of the skirt. Thank you, Lauren. Really appreciate your input and tutorials! Love your channel💕
Thank you so much Claudia! Great question! I had a spool of Dritz shirring elastic that was 30 yards, and plenty for the first dress! For the second one I picked up some Gutermann which was only 11 yards per spool, and used about 2.5 spools. Hope this helps! ❤️
Hi Lauren! I loved this video and I LOVE the Hill House Nap Dresses so I will definitely be trying this out. One question, for the second tier, do you add another 25% to the first tier width or keep it the same? I'm a fairly new sewist so this may be self-explanatory but I wanted to ask. Thanks so much!
Hi Rachel! Thank you so much for watching! I added another 25% to the first tier width, and then 25% of the second tier's measurement for the third tier. I hope this helps!
I started to make this dress but after cutting the pieces out, the front & back piece seems too big. If we take your bust measurements 34+ 2 × 2 pieces, that = 72 inches. Does shirring shrink it by 100%? I've read that it should shrink between 10 and 12 inches. How much should the circumference be before starting?

@@LaurenJohnson thank you! I made this dress and it turned out amazing! the tutorial was very simple. this is the second dress I've ever made, and the first I made alone. I made it knee length and I love it!
Hi Jessica! For the looser strap, I took a piece of elastic, and stretched it across the strap underneath one of the rows of shirring. I just stitched in down over the same stitch line. I hope this helps!
None of these shirring tutorials discuss how many bobbins were used. Was one enough? Then, how did you finish off each row? Did you tie them off or back stitch?
Great question! I usually have to refill it once, and I back stitch before cutting the thread as well as restarting the stitching. I'd definitely plan on more than one bobbin!
