Agreed, in particular as lots of the FTB versions are even better than the original album versions. Sound quality is absolutely great and one can hear the intimate atmosphere of the FTB recording sessions. This is how music should be! Would love to have records available of all recordings.
Holy shit those lungs of Theon. Just two days ago I saw them in Hamburg and at one point he soloed. And no shit, the sounds he could produce with a tuba were just insane. From playing multiple notes simultaneously to making it sound like a tuba. I had no idea a tuba could even make those sounds. And he just keeeeeeept going and going, I guess it ended up being around 10 minutes of him playing solo non-stop. Just insane.
He did the same thing in Chicago it was fucking amazing. he soloed for like 20 minutes straight but every second was amazing. I have a video on my channel if anyone wants to see
i actually ended up shouting "holy shit!" at one point in that solo section when i saw them. i feel privileged to have seen sons of kemet before they broke up.
So, Radiohead is my fave band. Thom Yorke & Jonny Greenwood formed a side project called The Smile (which I’m sure most of you know) and they recruited an incredibly complex drummer, who is Tom Skinner, of SOK, and now I’m in LOVE!!!
This is not my kind of music at all, but this is amazing. The rhythms are infectious, the melodies interesting, the musicianship is both natural and breathtaking. I will be watching this again and again.
Shabaka Hutchins (tenor) is usually considered the star of this band, and he's great - but it absolutely depends upon Theon Cross, brumping away on the Big Horn. What a monster! What a pair of lungs! Decades ago, I saw Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy, and he made this introduction: "And now, the man with the Lips Of Steel, playin' that tuba all night long - BOB STEWART!" That's Theon, as well. The whole band's sound reminds me a bit of a slimmed-down version of Henry Threadgill's Very Very Circus.
You just brought back such great memories. I've heard Bowie's Brass Fantasy many times, they were always simply great! Once I asked Lester, why he always had that white coat on on stage. His explanation: I'm a scientist, I do research.
I always expecct two drummers to be chaos.. these two play together perfectly. These musicians are playing something very new that pulls influences from all the the great bebop, hard bop and Avante jazz of the 50's 60's and 70's .
and actually very heavily influenced by many African rhythms, which make immediate sense if you listen to nigerian-brazillian-latin-american black music.
Honestly gutted to see these guys split. Amazing performers and incredible sounds every single time I listen to them. I hope they keep the project alive while their embark on something new, which is hopefully even more magical!
Olympian musicians. Just perfect execution combined with a pace and energy I've not seen. The sax player is reminiscent of Gato, Kirk, Pharoah, guys who played brilliantly and with incredible force that in turn produces extended range. Fire.
Clicking this youtube video was one of the best decisions of my life. Love the saxophonist, and having 2 drummers is something I haven’t seen before. Amazing stuff
Let's put a band together. "Great! Who's gonna play guitar?" No guitar....I'll play saxophone. "Oh...cool. Who's gonna play keyboards?" No keyboards...I'm gonna play saxophone. "Cool...cool....do you have a bass player? Don't need a bass player...I have a tuba guy. Woah....that's awesome. So....sax and tuba. Anything else you're thinkin' about? "Yes....two drummers!?" So....saxophone, tuba and two drummers. Something tells me you're not going to be playing BEATLES covers. "We could. And lots of other cool stuff." Sounds good to me.
Wee need From The Basement sessions on streaming (Spotify, Dezzer and stuff) or physical copias or both. This stuff is big treasure. A great audivisual caption of what Sons of Kemeth are and will be following their upcoming break-up.
I was gonna say this reminds of a band called "Drums and Tuba" and they opened for les claypool and when i was walking into the club I was SURE it was Les on stage, but no it was the tuba mane
had the utmost pleasure of seeing y’all live in San Francisco in April and my goodness…is it nice to get another taste of magical journey of your transmutations. 👁🖤👁
really great set. I will say the way the drums are panned left and right does not gell with the camera angles that show them in the other position most of the time though. Just hurts my brain for some reason
First time hearhing this/them! It would be even more insane if Larnell Lewis were on one of the drum sets! Just sayin... They need an NPR Tiny Desk set!
Their current tour is their last; all of them are involved in other projects - Shabaka just started releasing solo stuff, has the band the Ancestors, and the Comet is Coming together with Betamax and Danalouge, who make up Soccer96 - - and who have performed on Tiny Desk ~ one of my favourites!
Where are they living? What language are they speaking? I'm seeing the most elaborate shapes and colours. All I know for sure is that I do not have control of my body listening to these 4 discoverers.
I highly doubt that the world of science will ever have the capacity to go as far into the jungle as this. Like, my sober brain doesn't know what just hit it. Thank you to all 4 of you, very very special stuff
0:38 Pick Up Your Burning Cross 4:33 drums tandem 🥁 (Pick Up Your Burning Cross) 5:17 Think Of Home 10:15 In Remembrance Of Those Fallen 14:57 Throughout The Madness, Stay Strong
I actually used to think that the basement was Radioheads own personal basement
It belongs to Nigel Godrich, their producer.
No my friend
I just learned that it wasn't today.
There’s multiple “basements”. Radiohead used Two different studios for theirs. These new ones are at Nigel’s private studio
well is from Nigel Godrich, so you were partially right lol
Mad props to the bottom end, carrying bass lines with breath is a herculean challenge.
U should seriously consider making ALL these sessions into LP's... please, I beg having this and the rest as albums
I agree 100%!
1000% I would literally break my bank account for this

I play tuba and let me tell you... what he does is actually inhumane
i actually ended up shouting "holy shit!" at one point in that solo section when i saw them. i feel privileged to have seen sons of kemet before they broke up.
Before the upright bass - the Tuba was the main bass instrument in Jazz bands. Love to see it in a contemporary setting!
It's because unlike the upright it doesn't need amplification and it's easier to carry
@@bacicinvatteneacaeasy to carry 😂
It's only TH-cam comments that I learn little golden nuggets like this! 👍🏿
@@mushroomjesus2068 LOL easy to carry
Yeah we need to go back to tuba
So, Radiohead is my fave band. Thom Yorke & Jonny Greenwood formed a side project called The Smile (which I’m sure most of you know) and they recruited an incredibly complex drummer, who is Tom Skinner, of SOK, and now I’m in LOVE!!!
That was my exact pathway👍🏼
will you marry me
Just saw the smile tonight. Doing some exploring now.
The same way 😮
Props to whoever decided the formula for the band
Tuba + tenor sax + 2 drummers + incense = genius
This is not my kind of music at all, but this is amazing. The rhythms are infectious, the melodies interesting, the musicianship is both natural and breathtaking. I will be watching this again and again.
Sounds like it /is/ your kinda music
It absolutely is your kind of music. Check out Theon Cross or Comet Is Coming
Seeing them live was electrifying. They definitely took a jazz concert to a different level of excitement.
same. this was an unexpected tasty treat.
Check out Shabaka's other stuff!
Shabaka Hutchins (tenor) is usually considered the star of this band, and he's great - but it absolutely depends upon Theon Cross, brumping away on the Big Horn.

Actually there are some other artists who have 2 drummers and it sounds great
To my ears, this stuff pulls a lot more from Afrobeat and other dance music than anything bop-related
and actually very heavily influenced by many African rhythms, which make immediate sense if you listen to nigerian-brazillian-latin-american black music.
@@ericfricke4512 exactly
@viniciuscomacento the beginning reminds me of a new orleans/2nd line rhythm
I just wish this was two hours long. Simply amazing production for a simply amazing band.
Seconded
Tom's drumming and tone leaves me near-speechless. It's like drinking the purest, most refreshing water possible and just the right amount.
Honestly gutted to see these guys split. Amazing performers and incredible sounds every single time I listen to them. I hope they keep the project alive while their embark on something new, which is hopefully even more magical!
Those drummers are such a unique and complimentary pair
Olympian musicians. Just perfect execution combined with a pace and energy I've not seen. The sax player is reminiscent of Gato, Kirk, Pharoah, guys who played brilliantly and with incredible force that in turn produces extended range. Fire.
Soooo glad I had a chance to see them live before they disbanded. Wow. Sons of Kemet are legendary!! I hope they come back in the future!
So glad I experienced this magic live back in April.
It's a shame this is coming to an end... but all these gents are a force on their own. Can't wait to see what they each come up with next!
Getting Sublime vibes from “Think of Home”, I think it’s the bass.
And the drums are incredible. In person the movement of the air must be powerful.
Woohoo. Makes me wanna do space dope with aliens!
One of the best uses of 2 drum kits at once I've seen
2:35 was such a sick progression of a percussive sax. Almost like gospel chops on brass
The drumming at the end of "In Remembrance Of Those Fallen" - just wow - even Shabaka grins big about it!

It's a shame this band will not be around much longer.
Why?
@@neocolors they are disbanding
One of the drummers (Tom) was brought in to play for radiohead side project.
@@polandk2 I would imagine there is more to it than that. The Smile will not be around for all that long. I am going to see them in December.
@@jamestemple8970 the smiles new album is amazing (better than anything Radioheads done in years) they will definitely record another one.
the drums are just sick!!
This deserves millions of views

this is the best i've discovered in a long time!
Another great one to check out is The Comet is Coming. Same saxophonist.
my expectation cant be higher
Wowzers... I just had the best Monday morning in ages. Absolutely fantastic!
Not gonna lie, I'm here specifically to learn more about that one guy from The Smile that wasn't in Radiohead.
The things you find while you are confined with covid. This is simple wonderful, the sons of ancient Egypt, I love it. Greetings fron México

Came for Shabaka but Mr. Cross... mind blown.
Hello The Smile fans
👋🏼
So delighted to have found these guys backwards through The Smile (and a little too late now that they're disbanding). They're truly incredible!
@10:00 _"Anyone got a light?"_ ...for attracting attention? 😄
Seeing them Last week at the Newport Jazz Fest was a dream come true.

Saw them live last year in Paris. They literally took us to another dimension. I didnnt know where i was anymore...

I'm afraid these disclaimers throw me off "This set includes recordings of tracks from Sons Of Kemet's album Black To The Future." Like, how much?
I think it's just worded poorly they are playing their hearts out
It means they’re playing songs off of that record and recording this session.
I think it's because they are including older and newer material
Tom Skinner 🔥
