Live In Studio: Sons of Kemet

British quartet Sons of Kemet, is led by sax player/clarinetist Shabaka Hutchings and propelled by tuba, and double drums. Theirs is buoyant music - a jubilant dance party which may or may not touch upon techno, hip hop, grime, Caribbean music, social commentary, and perhaps jazz. They play their tunes in-studio.

Why are you called the Sons of Khemt?

The ancient Egyptians called their land Kemet. Which means black land. So their name means Sons of the black land.
Ancient Egypte was also a black civilization but they teach us something else in school.

Egypt was often seen from a post segregation black pride protest point of view as the noble past of the blacks. Many jazz records echoes that from Strata East to Sun Ra.
