@@jomirod in 1989 (I was 8 at the time) I remember seeing this "old" guy move onto the next street of my grandparents. He'd have been mid to late 50s. He'd always be wearing the latest shell suit tracksuits and Reebok pump/air Jordan shoes. Man, I thought he was one cool dude. Now as a 41 year old I dress the same way that guy did. @@TheRetroManRandySavage I’ve no doubt a younger person has spotted you and been in awe of your cool. I’m not claiming to be anything sartorially special, but I’ve had my fair share of little kids smile and wave at me and people closer to Gen Z throw me a compliment about my look. And I dare say my looks are a little more oversized and Nick toon-looking than what a man of 40 ‘should’ wear according to more conservative opinions. Let’s keep on dressing however we damned well feel and admiring people who do same 🧊🔥

Probably does us men no harm to have a tiny insight into what it feels like for women to be so often boxed-in like that, but yeah... I haven't work shorts since I was sixteen because I always hated them, found them infantile and aesthetically ridiculous even when I was a kid. But that's just me; hell, I wear a kilt. I may not like 'em, but I have no reason to object to other people wearing 'em if that's their thing. I'm sure I look equally daft to them. One of the worst clothing sins of all is thinking - as the pair in this video seem to - that your own, subject fashion preferences can be preached as objective rules. It's a really common delusion in fashion blogger world.

Still disagree on leather jackets. It's arbitraty telling oh you're above 40 ditch that biker jacket. Doesn't make sense. A lot of 40 year old guys in much better shape than 30 year old ones and I, as the majority of people, will think the 40 guy in good shape will look better in the jacket than a 30 in not so great shape. Also, some aspects of style are highly subjective and even though I love your videos and find them really helpful I think sometimes (as is the case with this video and the previous one you mentioned) you guys come across as arrogant with that atitude of almost mocking your audience for disagreeing with you. Yes Ash may do that for a living but so do many other youtbers that disagree with you on this one. Just to clarify, I'm not 40 (33 actually) nor did I wrote a comment on this on the previous video so no, this isn't in no way a butthurt response, it's just an honest and constructive critic. When so many people tend to disagree with you, chances are (maybe, just maybe) you can be wrong!
Keep up the good work !

My biggest error over the years has been buying items that didn't fit because they were cheap, whether dress or casual.

I was really looking forward to this video to hear something unique. It was well thought out and presented. Unfortunately, the one thing it lacks is perspective. Being a guy just barely getting into the age bracket you are describing, or a young woman who dresses the unrealistic celebrity personalities does not lend itself well to the average Joe with a wife, career, and a few kids.
With that said, none of the things that you said about guys in their 40s, 50s, and 60s applies if they do wear these four essentials:
    - Good Grooming - You should look like you care about how you look. But, don’t look like you spend your every waking hour caring about how you look. You should not care any further than your morning and evening bathroom routine. The only all day exception is moisturizer and sunblock.
    - Good Health Habits - Get a good lifestyle (diet and activity level). You are not trying to be an Adonis. Embrace a certain amount of your dad-body. You earned it. Just don’t look like you flat out gave up. After all, you should look like you care more about your wife, kids, and career than you so about your abs.
    - Good Tailoring - Like a good gym, you should have a good tailor. Use them both in equal amounts. Buy and own clothing that is well kept/maintained and fits well. Throw out anything that is worn out or doesn’t fit.
    - Confidence - The best look is to look like you are not trying too hard without looking like you are not trying at all. Shorts, leather jackets, and Henleys are functional items, not fashion items. Wear them as such. And own the look when you do. Facial hair is your own personal or religious prerogative. Wear it because you are that style, not because that style is cool.
And, for heaven’s sake, stop dressing to impress or attract people 10, 20, and 30 years younger than yourself. Look good for you. The people your own age will be impressed and attracted to you naturally.

I respectfully disagree on some details, particularly the leather jacket and the Henley. 40 is just a number. We age differently. We have different personalities and body types. What looks good on some doesn’t look good on others and so on. I became 40 on January. So it’s ok if I wore a leather jacket on December, but it’s not ok in January?! Doesn’t make much sense. Still I thank you for the great content. We’re not going to agree 100% on all topics , but I still enjoy the channel. I take what I like and works for me, and leave what doesn’t.

I'm all in favour of avoiding ridicule and excess, but your whole tone here in this video is ageist and very, very conventional (conformist, conservative also come to mind).
Sticking to the classics is all very well for men who don't care, who wouldn't know a cargo pant from a dinner jacket and who probably need to have whole outfits already prepared in their wardrobe because the wouldn't know how to get dressed otherwise.
But there are men who have taste out there. And they probably won't accept advice from a very opinionated, "bubbly" and impatient person of the opposite sex anyway. Even less so when this person is trying to strip their style from any trace of personality.

Shorts are a must, just don't wear cargo shorts or big baggy basketball shorts unless you are working out. Even then they are questionable!!

Function over fashion. If your concerned over what someone thinks you most probably lack confidence. I know if I had broom stick arms like the gentleman in this video I'd probably lack a lot of confidence

Yeah the Henley topic is really questionable. Many types of clothing don’t look right if you’re really out of shape. It seems a bit extreme to throw out a good Henley. I thought I was doing well to purchase a nice 50 dollar Henley in the “older” section of the department store. I thought I was upgrading. They are good enough for Daniel Craig and those of us who have his basic physique in our late 40s.

Shorts are t-shirts for your southern half. Avoid cargos, denim shorts, baggy shorts, cutoffs or haven forbid anything too short, and I think shorts are perfectly acceptable casual summer wear at any age. Being visibly uncomfortable and sweaty is not a good look either.

Hopefully by your 40s you’ve come to some important realizations. Know thyself, be thyself. An authentic aura is unmistakable and when it comes to clothes, wearing the ones you like, feel good in, and not requiring external validation will have you naturally looking your best. Some might define it as “owning it.” Further, as you mature you realize most people are the lead role in their own personal play - they aren’t thinking about you as much as you think about yourself. Surprisingly you are a much smaller blip on their radar than you think - and this extends to your socks or jacket too. As for people who do monitor and notice all the other little things about other people, evaluate those things, and decide what these other people should or should not be doing - you learn they are best to avoided or at least ignored.

You may feel your best in what you're wearing, but that doesn't mean you look your best.
