I'm 54 years old and I've been fishing since I was able to walk ! And I never stop learning from you , even when watching the same videos over and over ! Thanks man !!!
lol I'm actually sitting at my pc watching rather than on my tv so I thought I'd stop by and tell you guys that you rock!! My fishing bug laid dormant for 15 years then I caught my fist pike this year and the bug has RETURNED!! I bet I've watched 100 hours of your videos. Hands down I have learned more from you guys than any other show. Love your enthusiasm! So so so many new things to try. Thanks guys!!
love it that y'all are guided by what works and not convention, b/c when u explain your diverging choice, it often illuminates the reasons behind both. thanks!
Very informative video on flipping and fishing heavy cover, love your advice on flipping with a shorter Rod, I've been using a 7'3 and 7'4 flip sticks and yes you are absolutely correct about everything!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge on the subject, very well done!
Just in time! Been studying up and getting into punching and flipping heavy cover and then you almost as if created this video for me. Stoked! and thank you so much for what you guys do. you're the most informative bass fishing youtuber out there. your preferences are pretty much fact haha.
Matt, thanks for anther great video bro! I consider myself a experienced Bass fisherman but I learn a lot from you and Tim! I'm in central Ca. So I apply what I learn down here, and I'm smashing them! More big fish per trip than the other 45 years of bass fishing here thanks again really like to meet you guys some time! If I came up could we set up a guide trip?
I just switched from 50 pound suffix 832 braid cause I don't have a lot of grass or mats where I fish it's 95% wood and stumps, now I use 20 pound floro, I throw my 3/4 and 1 ounce jigs on the same setup. I didn't have a problem with the braid it helped me a lot of getting my bait back on hang ups but the 20 pound floro is so strong I usually get my baits back also. I feel like I get a little better feel on the bite with the floro as well. Great vid!!!
Great video, lots of good information and perspective. You guys have been knocking it out of the park the last month plus with the video topics and execution.
Man, you have no idea how much this helps. ive been using a 7'3 heavy with the 65lb braid and ive been snelling my straight shanks. that has always been my go to punching set up. I fish from a kayak a ton and always lose them if they ever get caught in the lilies instead of me pulling them straight out but rarely lose them when I flip and pitch on a 7'6 MH with 20lb fluro with an EWG. I never thought to punch with the EWG. That could be the difference maker. Great Video!
I've been a believer in your theory about longer rods for a few years now. All of my shallow water/ bank beater rods are 6'8- 6'10n and my heavy flipping rod is 7'3. The only rod I personally want any longer is my 7'11 crankin' rod, and thats just for casting distance, not power over the fish.
Spot Lock much with the trolling motor, lol. Seriously though Tactical Bassin videos are always great to watch, I've learned a lot. I am no pro but it helps to flip through your videos when I need to consult one.
Great video dude! I definitely agree about everyone blending flippin and pitchin together. everyone makes videos titled "flippin heavy cover" and its actually pitchin heavy cover. but its the same deal. getting thru the slop to pull out the monsters!
Hey Matt you should do some new videos flipping and pitching with the Dobyns Fury rods the 765, 735 mag heavy etc. so we can see some of the cheaper rods and how they work in heavy cover. Maybe a video well using them and the add some information at the end. So roughly a 20 to 30 minute video using budget gear.
I would love to see a video about pitching around wood and brushes. Where i live in Georgia, we dont have lakes or rivers with grass. Would like to know the best type jigs and what size weights to use when using texas rigs.
my champion 736 is one of my favorite rods to have in my hand for flipping and frogs , you can really launch a big weight with it. Dobyns rods are crazy light can't beat em
excellent. the conversion method for weight increase when flipping jigs instead of texas rigs was significant. BUt, those flipping skirts look great for versatile and customized presentations!
Would love some tips on flipping and fishing in general submerged hydrilla and milfoil that isn't to the surface yet. Especially on the outer grass edge where it drops off in that 12-14ft line and the grass is 2-4 ft from the surface! Thanks for all yall do. I've heard the term Structure grass I believe this is what I'm talking about because on our home lake the grass only grows on main lake points and structure vs everywhere on the lake.
Great questions bud. We JUST did an updated version of this vid (releasing soon) but we didn't include specifics on that deep grass fishing. However we touch on it in a couple of upcoming vids so hopefully you can grab a few tips along the way.
Thanks for chiming in David! I'm amazed how many of us figured this out independently and just silenty went back to doing it. I guess the vocal majority weren't as big as they thought.
My top 3 punching baits have been sweet beaver(or smallie beaver), D Bombs, and Yamamoto Flappin Hogs. Some people don't like the flappin hogs because of all the appendages but I've had no problem with them, and the action is fantastic. Such a soft and supple plastic. They get torn up quick but I'm convinced they have more action than many other creature baits on market. You can cut some of the appendages off if you want it more stream lined. Little pricey but with Yamamoto baits, you DO get what you pay for. The SK Rage Bug is one I've just recently been using a lot to compare with my usual baits. I tend to limit myself to 5 colors, and that's it. Otherwise I go crazy. They all fit into a theme, sort of.. and some times I'll branch out and try different tones within a theme, but I try not to go crazy because you don't have to. 1. Green Pumpkin w/ Blue Flake or Blue swirl. Some companies also call this Magic Craw or Blue Craw. My favorite color and I always throw it first. Just works. 2. Watermelon w/ Red and Black flakes. Classic color. Everyone uses it. 3. Black w/ Blue Flake. Another classic. 4. Black w/ Red Flake. Another classic. Great for sunny days when fishing heavily stained water. That red flake helps. 5. Any kind of amber/light brown color like motoroil. Missile makes the D BOMB in a "Desert Storm" color. Reaction Innovations has a "Donkey Punch" or "Corn Dog" color. Etc. Anything in those amber or light brown tones works great. That covers all the bases in my mind. Sometimes I'll experiment from those colors like I said, maybe a June Bug instead of a black w/ blue flake but that's about it. If I need some extra flash, I have JJ's magic for that. You could streamline this down further, and just go with Green Pumpkin, Watermelon/Red and Black/Blue. And many people do just that and keep it to those 3 colors. Which is perfectly fine as well. Good video, Matt.
Awesome comment! Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts! Very interesting about the flappin hog. I'm one of those that doesn't throw it. I agree completely on keeping the colors as simple as possible. Personally its green pumpkin/black flake, Green Pumpkin Purple (If I'm feeling exotic lol), Black/Red, and black/blue. But if I had to I could throw green pumpkin blake flake every day of my life and be perfectly happy with the results.
Awesome stuff! But Ive been stuck on this question for a while. If you are flipping lighter cover like around docks, boathouses, and sparse weeds, how do you decide whether to flip a plastic beaver or a football/flipping jig?! Talking summer and fall.
No joke, that's pretty much what I used all day and I didn't even read this comment until just now! Nice confidence booster for sure. Black senko with watermelon flakes on a wacky rig (crushed 'em). Black and blue jig with a matching beaver/rodent trailer. I pulled in a few, but lost more than I caught. I need to work on that jig hookset. I guess I had "wacky" hookset on my mind and wasn't aggressive enough. Thanks!
Hello Tim and Matt my name is Bobby Fitzgerald I live in Saint Petersburg Florida I was watching your video on flipping, I really want to learn how to flip and pitch, it was a very helpful video, but I have one question, I like to use ugly stik rods in the video you said a 7'3" rod helps give me power over the fish, but ugly stik doesn't have a 7'3" rod they have a 7'6" rod would you say that would be good enough to give me power over the fish. Thanks your avid subscriber, Bobby Fitzgerald
Matt thanks for all your teaching sir. I have a question when using braid I heard you say dark green on the color is that what you recommend and how do you feel about black braid. Thanks for everything
Another great video Matt. I prefer braid for basically everything I can get away with lol you mentioned in the video the smoother braid not cutting into wood which I agree with. I am curious to hear your thoughts on braid rubbing against cover and making noise. I've noticed on smoother braid I cannot feel it vibrate as much but do you think that the noise would spook a fish?
Pete, In a really pressured lake I think it can be a problem. On most bodies of water I think that vibration actually gets the fish's attention and is a positive.
i completely agree with you on your longer rod "theory" it's almost common sense. i can hold 5lbs in my hand all day, but hang that 5lbs on the end of an 8' rod n you can barely lift it with one hand. i've actually gone back to most of my rods are 7' or less.
Any time you're flipping its time to peg. If you're outside of cover you don't need to. Here is a video Tim did on that exact subject. th-cam.com/video/FNA5s97Zl-g/w-d-xo.html
Woo tungsten I put heat shrink in my tungsten when I need it lined there a few videos on the usetube showing a how to you can't go wrong with Woo Tungsten
Honestly bud, that Curado 70 is no joke as a little flipping reel. Strong drag, great gearing, and you don't need a ton of line capacity. Its an underrated killer. Here's the link to the reel: bit.ly/2apmDJt

Sure have but wasn't a fan personally. I do much, much better with a right hand retrieve. Actually just finished a video on this subject that will be up in the coming weeks.
If you get a chance to open the video description it should have a link to all the exact gear I use. I love the 765 but its not my only flipping rod by any means
Of course! Thank you so very much for getting back with me. I really appreciate it! I'll definantly take a look down in the description and check out what gear you use. I hope you had an amazing day and can't wait to watch the next video. Btw these underwater videos y'all have been posting have been quite facinating to say the least. I feel like I learn something new everytime I watch them so thank you Matt and Tim for taking the time and the effort to go out there and make these quality videos for us viewer's. I'm sure I can speak for the majority when I say we really do appreaciate it.
Hey @tacticalbassin I bought the dobyns champions flipping 7’6 rod was wondering what else could I use this rod to throw on? I’m pairing it would a daiwa tatula TIA
I am an avid suffix 832 user and followed the sharpie tip...i was braking off 50lb (when I couldnt break it) and had issues with knots. Never use a sharpie again
One question: When flipping, how much braid do you thread your reel with? I only use braid in thick mess. Mainly stick to 20 to 25 pound floricarbon line.
lmao people here in the east using braid an the lake looks likes someone out there cutting grass you cant hardly fish for all the cut grass out there hahahaha
bank fishing we would use 12 ft rod just to be able to throw a long ways in a boat why would you want to throw so far just gives the fish more time to throw the hook out
Wow just seeing this out of the box th-cam.com/users/postUgkxQr1yd4Zc6qJF-scTB6Zb9dQbVpviuRxB recommend I have yet to fish with this set up, but based on the first hands on appeal, I can tell this is going to change the way i pack and carry to a whole new level. If you fish like i do, you know the smaller and less stuff the better. I’ve added a photo of just some of my gear so you can see how serious i am about fishing.
I'm 54 years old and I've been fishing since I was able to walk ! And I never stop learning from you , even when watching the same videos over and over ! Thanks man !!!

also, an idea: JJ's magic should make a black dipping dye for braid.
Thanks for watching and commenting! And you're right, that JJ's would be a genius idea!
Very informative video on flipping and fishing heavy cover, love your advice on flipping with a shorter Rod, I've been using a 7'3 and 7'4 flip sticks and yes you are absolutely correct about everything!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge on the subject, very well done!

Thank hou Kurt! That's what we're here for. If you need anything specific just ask.
10:56 so true about rod length. I fish a 10ft jigstick for surface irons to catch tuna, and it kills u. U lose so much leverage with a long rod
Great video, lots of good information and perspective. You guys have been knocking it out of the park the last month plus with the video topics and execution.
Thank you Dan!!

Great info. Always top notch videos. Thanks Matt
Thank you!
Favorite flippin bait right now is the Paca Slim by far
I love using Superline EWG hooks for flipping!
Great Vid man. Thanks for the help!
Nice vid! Personally flipping I use a 7'2" and find it works well, thought not many people did that. Very interesting
Awesome! You're a step ahead ;-)
excellent. the conversion method for weight increase when flipping jigs instead of texas rigs was significant. BUt, those flipping skirts look great for versatile and customized presentations!
Yeah its a very significant difference. However, they fish extremely well. And the skirts are awesome!
Great video, great tips. Thanks a bunch. You guys rock!
Thanks Drew!
BTW when you mentioned that other owner hook you use I thought you were going to say the wide gap plus, those are sweet especially for tubes
Love the instructional vids brother! tight lines!
+william eikner Thanks Bud!

Man I use these tips to fish spotted bay bass out here in San Diego thanks alot
Great video guys!
Thanks Mark!
I do this exact same deal in the CA delta, I use a 3/0 or a 4/0 egw superline hook and I lose a lot less fish when flipping or punching!!
Thanks for chiming in David! I'm amazed how many of us figured this out independently and just silenty went back to doing it. I guess the vocal majority weren't as big as they thought.

Nigel Ridge Id go with a texas rig beaver
I almost had a heart attack when the king of power Matt Allen said the curse word EWG! And no snell knot to boot?? >shaking my head in disbelief.
Great video so much info
Thanks Robert!
What do you like to throw in a murky water pond? There's grass, vegetation and some timber with depths of 15-20ft. Thanks!
You can't beat a senko when there is grass but if it were us, go with a 3/8 ounce flipping jig with a sweet beaver trailer.

Awesome bro! Yep sounds lke all you need to do is put the hammer on them when they eat that jig.
cool tips, just saved the link for future, big like
Awesome! Thanks for checking it out!

Awesome vid!
Thank you!
In light cover, which lb leader would you use for the jig?
Matt thanks for all your teaching sir. I have a question when using braid I heard you say dark green on the color is that what you recommend and how do you feel about black braid. Thanks for everything

Reaction innovations is my go too for almost every body of water I fish.. best all around color is Hematoma..
i completely agree with you on your longer rod "theory" it's almost common sense. i can hold 5lbs in my hand all day, but hang that 5lbs on the end of an 8' rod n you can barely lift it with one hand. i've actually gone back to most of my rods are 7' or less.
Exactly :-)
Great video!
Thank you!
I thought black was pretty visible color... Is it same for lines?
I learned a ton like always thanks
great info Matt!
When to peg and not to peg?
Any time you're flipping its time to peg. If you're outside of cover you don't need to. Here is a video Tim did on that exact subject. th-cam.com/video/FNA5s97Zl-g/w-d-xo.html
Hi Matt, what knot you use to tie on the offset hook for flipping & punching?
Excellent!Question on a different subject. Do you use a Hydrowave, and if so under what circumstances? Thanks
Yes we both run hydrowaves on our boats. Its a pretty complex question though... I think we can do a video on that.
I'd love a hydrowave video!!
Woo tungsten I put heat shrink in my tungsten when I need it lined there a few videos on the usetube showing a how to you can't go wrong with Woo Tungsten
Great Great Video!
Thank you!
What's a good reel for flippin that has a good drag that can handle 65 to 80lb braid under $280? Preferably Daiwa or Shimano.
Honestly bud, that Curado 70 is no joke as a little flipping reel. Strong drag, great gearing, and you don't need a ton of line capacity. Its an underrated killer. Here's the link to the reel: bit.ly/2apmDJt
Aint the pit boss and beaver basic lly the same or do you notice the fish react deffernt to em
great vid thanks!!
You're welcome!
Idk if someone asked already, but what knot do you tie with the superline hooks? Does it get pretty beat up with the weight?
The Double Palomar is all you need. Doesn't seem to get beat up at all.
Thank You
I'm sure I've missed this somewhere in your videos, but what is the major difference in the Dobyns Cast vs. Flip rods?
The flip rods are stouter actions and tend to have the guides start farther up the blank so there is room for the traditional 2 handed flipping even though very few of us actually do that.
TacticalBassin gotcha. Thanks for the response. I had recently been looking at trying a dobyn's and wasn't sure which heavier rod to try since I can't get my hands on one before.
Great vid. Do you use a microphone? I have to turn my sound bar way up.
We do use a microphone but we had a problem with this vid. I'm glad you were able to turn it up enough! Sorry about that.
That's cool. Love the info on your videos.
great video! i know some guys like to use a heavy flouro leader from time to time, do you feel there are times when that is necessary when flipping?
If the cover is sparse (IE they can see the line) then a leader is a nice option. If the cover is really dense then there is no need.
do these suggestions differ from place to place? like i know water effects it but does the area or temperature have anything to do with what you're showing us? I ask because the landscape/water structure where i live is totally different than where y'all fish..
It should differ very little. You can use these same tips to flip them out of timber or pitch dock pilings, pads, etc.
Have you tried left handed reels to flip or pitch?
Sure have but wasn't a fan personally. I do much, much better with a right hand retrieve. Actually just finished a video on this subject that will be up in the coming weeks.
My favorite flipping and pitching bait has to be the papa pit boss.
Pegged with a 1 oz tungsten
That's not a bait we really use but have heard that quite a few times. You definitely aren't alone, it must be a winner. Thanks for sharing!
Great info, Matt!
Thanks Dan!
maybe i missed it but what knot are you using flippin with that offset shank hook?
Dylan, I just throw a double palomar. There is no reason a snell knot wouldn't work I just haven't needed it.
Hey matt, whats your opinion on the double plopper?
Tim just shot a full video about it... here's the link. th-cam.com/video/LljASPsBa-Y/w-d-xo.html
thanks bud keep up the good work!
I have a curado 200i on a 7,6 med heavy moderate action would that work fine for flipping?
The rod may be a touch light but yes you can definitely get away with it.
thanks for the help
Hey Matt, I have a quick question. Do you also use a dobys 765 flip or do you prefer a heavy action rod when flipping into cover?
Big swim jigs, Texas rigs, heavy jigs, frogs, flipping, heavy paddle tail swimbaits, etc.
how long of a leader do you tie when you're pitching
Only 3-4 feet.
I am an avid suffix 832 user and followed the sharpie tip...i was braking off 50lb (when I couldnt break it) and had issues with knots. Never use a sharpie again
Dude you're high😂
Seaguar makes black braid line specifically for flipping. No more sharpies
What kind of boat is that??
dam never thought about it all my stuffs from walmart lol nice video
Ha! Thanks for watching Bro!
One question: When flipping, how much braid do you thread your reel with?
I only use braid in thick mess. Mainly stick to 20 to 25 pound floricarbon line.
What size reaction innovation beaver do you use like what inch
Most of our flipping is done with the 4.2"

lmao people here in the east using braid an the lake looks likes someone out there cutting grass you cant hardly fish for all the cut grass out there hahahaha
you right I don't understand why all these people wanting a big long rod we never used but a 6''6 rod growing up for all ways to fish
I can't hear anything matt
disagree monifilint on a bait caster is better.
bank fishing we would use 12 ft rod just to be able to throw a long ways in a boat why would you want to throw so far just gives the fish more time to throw the hook out
Can’t hear you very well

Wow just seeing this out of the box th-cam.com/users/postUgkxQr1yd4Zc6qJF-scTB6Zb9dQbVpviuRxB recommend I have yet to fish with this set up, but based on the first hands on appeal, I can tell this is going to change the way i pack and carry to a whole new level. If you fish like i do, you know the smaller and less stuff the better. I’ve added a photo of just some of my gear so you can see how serious i am about fishing.
excellent vid ! thank !
Thank you Marc
