I am 63 yo but have only within the past 2 years tried to learn about Bass fishing after retiring. I don't have the resources you have but I'm not jealous... well maybe just a little bit LOL. It doesn't matter that we all can't afford the equipment you have. What matters is the way you present your videos, We can all learn something useful no matter where we are or what tackle we have. Thanks for all the time you put into sharing your knowledge.
I looked through the comments and saw a lot of negativity based on your filming skills. Guys, keep in mind these two men are bass fishermen. Not some Hollywood trained cameramen. Just because they’re based in California doesn’t mean they’re naturally talented filmmakers, they’re just naturally talented fishermen. So please be respectful and constructive with your criticism.
You guys are awesome. Smartest fishermen on TH-cam period. Not sure why anyone has more subs but hey I'm kinda glad I get to be on the cutting edge of bass fishing on chickamauga lake.
Thank you for always giving great advice. It's a crime you two don't have at least 250k subs. Everything I've tried from your advice (bully wa, dirty jigs, sick fish, etc) has been permanently placed in my arsenal. Thanks fellas
Im just gunna start a notebook of each of your guys videos and keep it in my tacklebag lol..ive already absorbed so much info from u guys over the last few yrs and it has totally made me a better fisherman overall..there truly is no other channel out there with the type of info you and Tim provide..love it..
I’ve watched this video a thousand times and it just keeps getting better. Between the way Matt articulates the subject of jig fishing, and Tim’s body language while jig fishing it’s definitely one of TB greatest! Epic!🙌🏽🎣💪🏽
I love watching these vids with Tim fishing in the background just like in the Punching video, while Matt explains everything. Thanks again guys for another great vid.
Would love to see a video exclusively about skipping jigs from you guys. When and where to skip certain sizes of jigs and the trailers that work best for ya'll. Always exciting to see a new video pop up, great work Matt and Tim!
Matt/Tim, this video "popped" up on my view list the other day, watched it, and I wanted to add a comment regarding your preference here for a moderate action rod. You mentioned that a rod that loads up with a stronger, deeper bend keeps the pressure on the jig hook where a fast action rod might straighten out and release the pressure . . . fish jumps and swims off. The other thing worth mentioning that I think most anglers just overlook, hold such a strong preference for fast action rods, is that a rod that bends more, like a moderate, shortens the lifting point and gives the angler much more power over the fish. I think most people think this is not so, that a moderate action rod is softer and less powerful. But, that extra bend greatly improves the fighting leverage an angler has. That adds more credence to going "moderate" for fishing a jig. Great video! Brad
Wow...Just wow...you guys are jyst awesome in the way you teach, show, AND explain!!! Like I said in the past you teach like you are talking to a friend. Thank you for awesome videos. The other day I went through my gear and immediately knew what was for and why and realized I bought some of my lures because I saw them catching bass on other videos but did not know the type and color of water they were fishing because it was never mentioned...now to buy more lures that I don't have but really need and now realize why I wasn't catching bass with the lures I was throwing because I didn't know color choice depending on water color.
Another great detailed video and I liked Tim fishing in the background to see how he fishes a jig. I'm one of those guys that have not caught a fish on a jig. I'm feeling confident in my chatter bait fishing, it's helped me understand how to rip through grass to elicit a strike. Now I'm looking forward to fishing a jig in that same grass. I'll keep you posted!
This might be the most entertaining fishing instructional on TH-cam. Watching Tim swing on fish then shake his head in disbelief while Matt gives great information...doesn’t get much better than that
I lost count on how many times I came back to this vid. This is so informative! You guys make great content @tacticalbassin and I try to watch every single vid that comes out.
Tims animated reaction of a missed hook set in the back ground was awesome. Another great vid guys. You two are by far the most informative youtubers going
Thanks for all that you guys do. I’ve been watching your videos for quite a bit and I was able to apply the tips and catch my personal best on a jig this past weekend.
awesome video!!! im just now getting into jig fishing!!! always would throw shakey heads, texas rigged worms etc because nobody fishes a jig on our lake some do but most say you cant catch fish here on them on lake marion, sc i refuse to believe that hope to get one soon on a jig!! thanks for the superb info!
Great video guys. Couldn't agree more about keeping it simple on the jig colors and using trailers for additional / contrasting colors. Thanks for the laughs too. Keep em coming guys. Brent Schneider.
On the rod part makes sense. My phenix m1 7'8" is a mh-f but feels more like a mod-f. When hooking up a fish, just like you stated i feel in control of the fight. My jig rod just doesn't feel right, as if when the fish jumps and shake it head, i feel that i need to lean in more to keep the rod bend. Excellent info.
I now have a whole notes section just labeled Jigs! Thanks guys this was the video I needed. I love your tips videos, they are so in depth and easy to follow. Do you think you could do a newer one on Prop Baits? Cause I have one of those Heddon Torpedo things but I don't know what to do with it.
You guys are awesome! Thank-you for sharing your priceless knowledge. Helps me take my kayak bass fishing to the next level. Tight lines! Curt, Vallejo California
Hi TacticalBassin! I would really appreciate if you could make a video of which kind of rod you use (M,MH,H,XH) with which action according to the style of fishing you are doing. I really, really enjoy those informative videos that comes from pro anglers. There's always 1 or 2 tips that I didn't know about!
Dobyns champion Xp 744 jig rod special with a 13 fishing concept Kp reel. The kp reel Is a little overkill but couldn't be happier with the combo for anything 3/8-3/4. Anything heavier and I'm busting out the broomstick lol. Great video guys
Could you do a video on what to look for in buying a first boat? I'm on the collegiate trail with NC State's BassPack and looking to get a boat on a college budget
Do you think tying on a leader is always necessary even when fishing stained water? Also you never really mentioned fishing jigs around fallen timber I've had luck with this but have lost jigs doing it. Love the videos especially with Tim fishing in the background. Thanks for all the tips. also I've been using nothing but dirty jigs lately with your suggestions great products.
Dont watch seminar type videos when multitasking online.....restarted the video like 10 times before watching it through! lol Def not gonna miss 1 word of you all spilling the juice...same way I treat davy hite whenever I see him on basslive! You all know the recipe...and Im fixing to cook!
Used to be afraid of throwing a jig. Now I'm pulling 2's and 3's from my apartment pond leaving everyone so confused! Thanks for everything Matt and Tim!
I am relatively new with bass fishing and fish with small fishing club in north texas. You said that using a swimbait will eliminate 90% of bites. Just interested to know if I should ignore swimbaits and dropshot in favor of other baits. By the way, great channel!
I love fishing a jig. In my opinion, there's rarely a wrong time to throw a jig. Lots of great info in this one-take seminar, awesome. One question... I am at a bit of a loss trying to decide on a trailer for the micro jigs or very small finesse style jigs. Most of the trailers that I have looked at are not in proportion (read: too big) with the size of the jig. Any suggestions would be much appreciated, gentlemen.
Ian Kehler try a double tail grub or a beaver style trailer. Also if it's too long cut off some of the body to make the bait sit closer to the head of the jig.
OK GUYS GREAT VIDEO YOU DID A VIDEO SAYING YOU ALL TRAVELED ACROSS THE STATES FISHING LAKES AND RIVERS NOW I LIVE IN FLORIDA I HAVE 30 PONDS HERE BUT THEY ARE ONLY 4 TO 5 FEET DEEP THE SPRING BITE WAS GREAT THIS IS WERE I LEARNED TO WORK A SWIM JIG I STARTED TO MAKE MY OWEN AN THEY WORK NOW WE ARE INTO SUMMER THE BITE JUST STOPPED I HAVE TRIED EARLY MORNING LATE MORNING TO EVENING IM LOCAN YOU HELP ME I FORGOT TO SAY IVE HAVE BEEN FISHING ALL MY LIFE BUT THIS HAS ME STUMPED THANKS D L MORGAN
Matt/Tim, do you guys notice any major differences in how to approach catching the three major species of black bass (Largemouth, Smallmouth and Spotted) aside from the obvious such as where they are located? Do you do anything different when concentrating on the different species using jigs or is it pretty much a one size fits all approach? I have little experience with spotted and smallmouth even though I've fished waters that contain them and jigs are usually one of my go-to lures at some point in the day.
In reference to pork jig trailers. Last time I was in Delta Bait "Fishermans Warehouse" in Manteca they had plenty of options for pork trailers. Anything from jig trailers to the long skinny split tail trailers for trolling broken back lures for stripers. Anyways just thought I'd drop that little tid bit just in case anyone is looking for pork.
Another good video guys. I had my first 100 fish day on a jig. Dirty jig in super Matt Brown with a chunk craw trailer caused the Mayhem. Im now a believer!
I live in east los angeles ive gone to alot of local ponds. And ive never caught a fish with a jig. Me and my bro throw the jigs bounce them on the floor, throw it in between grass and the fish dont bite. What works is drop shot and crank baits. Whats the reason why LA fish dont bite gigs
badboymorales I'm in Whittier so we probably hit the same ponds. Whatever you're throwing down size it. All our ponds are heavily pressured. Try 1/4 and under on 8lb or 6. Long drags and a twitch twitch, like a jerk bait. Good luck
I know Matt or Tim will have better advice but pressure and familiarity with the lure (especially the color and how it is fished) can make fish wary to bite. My jig success has picked up (also fishing pressured waters) by matching the hatch better, fishing a smaller profile jig and fishing it in ways other's may not be fishing it. Try imitating whatever the prevalent baitfish is as closely as possible and swim it away from cover immediately after it hits the water, or rip it up off the bottom and then kill it.
I live in San Jose (your neighbors up in NorCal) and I feel your pain on never catching a fish on a jig. I always comfortable on ned rigs with a trick worm and like you said crank baits and drop shots. I always try for the jig but never seem to pull them out.
badboymorales that's because the baits you fish catch more fish and a jig usually catches less but bigger fish, so, many times you have to wait more for a fish to bite a jig. My advice? Go out there and only take jigs with you! Fish them thinking you're fishing a worm. Drag it and give it some hops or twitches from time to time, pause them for 5 to 10 seconds... I spent years fishing a jig without a bite, and you know why? Because I fished them for some minutes, didn't get a bite and then switched to another bait. When I started to fish jigs for several hours in every fishing trip I started catching bass on them. I've caught some small bass (even fish under 1lb) on jigs, but I've caught a few bass bigger than any bass I've caught on worms. Also, use a sensitive rod. You should concentrate on the feeling of your jig when it is dragging the bottom. Fish them in and around cover. Use a smaller trailer and when you catch a few bass try switching to a bigger trailer. I recommend you start with a pitchin' jig or casting jig.
badboymorales im no pro, but from my experience jigs work better for me during the fall transition and thruout winter than the hotter months... now swim jigs, on the other hand, i like more during pre-spawn and thruout summer. Now mind you, all body's of water are different, meaning where at one place bass might prefer a spinner bait, you go to another lake or pond, it seems like all they want is craw baits, all the time! Bass are the same everywhere, yet a little different from place to place, state to state... that last statement is pretty standard thinking if your gamed up, but everything els is just my opinion/experience, hope that helped #each1teach1
I been throwing a 3/4oz football Jig on 50lb braid a lot this summer. I noticed on a windy day the wind really pushes around my braid while making a long cast. Any recommendations? Thanks guys awesome video 👊🏻👊🏻
I'm from Philadelphia and I'm trying to catch big cold water bass this winter would u suggest chucking n winding swim baits or jigs...and there's only bluegill n perch in the spot I fish???? Thx Matt 🖒🖒👊
Awesome video. I love jigs. I caught my PB Largemouth 4.2 (may not be big in CA but in MD that's a pretty good fish) and my dad caught a 4.7 on a jig in the same day in the spring during the prespawn. But during the summer the lakes fill with grass and the only jigs u can use are swim jigs and flipping jigs on docks and laydowns. So if I want to drag something in a lake with grass, what do I use??
Thank you guys for all the info and tips! I have been bass fishing since I was a kid (43 now), and always just used texas rigged plastic worms, top waters, and small spinners. Many techniques have passed me by. My 11 yo son has really gotten me back into fishing since he was old enough to hold a rod. This old dog has since discovered wacky rigged stick worms, which are my new favorite, swimbaits like the keitech fat swing (which are his favorite) and so on. We just got a bunch of jigs for Christmas and can't wait to try them when we get back home to FL! Thanks again! Charlie
3:53 Srry Tim I noticed you lost a fish over there. Just let the man fish! Haha nice info on jigs. I have never caught a bass with a jig. Idk if my technique is wrong but I'm excited to try again. Thanks for the info!
I'm in the boat of thinking it's the hardest lure to get a bite with. It definitely I'd a confidence thing. I know I can throw a t-rig craw and get a bite, it's so hard to force myself to throw a jig, even with darn near everyone telling me jigs are awesome.
Bob Hammond I'm the same way. I use jigs and I catch fish on jigs but I have to make myself use it. I have more confidence in Texas rigged soft plastics. So I keep a jig and a Texas rig tied on when I go out. If the t-rig doesn't produce right away I throw the jig. If the jig doesn't hit I go back the the plastics. But you'd be surprised how often I don't have to go back.
Hey, awesome videos! In Sweden we mostly use 15-30 gram shads for redfin perch (we dont have bass here), or smaller cranks, lipless and bladebaits. Can you recommend one rod for shads and one for small cranks/lipless? Looking for higher priced rods, around 250-300 dollars.
You list the Exage as your budget all around jig rod.. would you go with the 7'2 MH or the H? What would you consider the step up in the AP jig rod? Possibly the Dobyns Champion 734? I agree that I would like a more moderate bend and unfortunately in the Northeast no one carry the Dobyn's line in stock to handle.... The rod I used to use was a mid 80's Loomis MB 843 that I built myself. Which had a somewhat moderate bend with a good tip.... I have yet to come across a rod comparable and the newer GL3 rods seem much faster..... which is why I'm in search of another rod to replace it it. Believe it or not the rod that I actually liked in hand is the SM Tournament Concept TCS-C-701H... with the exception of the overall weight primarily because it's a production rod. Any insight would be greatly appreciated... suggestions in the middle of the two price ranges would be great also... Too many rods with not enough access to handle by the consumer is the problem....
I have a lake thats extremely deep, clear, rocky and pressured. I would think a finesse jig would excel, but it's still really tough to get bite on. I still want to throw a jig to try and get a bigger bite but idk what to use
What kind of jig would you use in deep hydrilla? Like 15 -20 foot. Or would that be possible to even use a jig ? I'm fishing a super clear lake with lots of deep hydrilla and natural underwater cold springs.
Awesome video. I've been having a lot of trouble breaking fish off on jigs during hooksets. I also always throw braid to a leader. What knot do you guys use to tie on your jigs? Been experimenting with different knots and can't find one that works. Please help!
I use a uni-knot for jig fishing. I know some other guys use a double-uni. My experience has been that I break palomars too often when using single hook baits. I'm sure it's just a matter of not tying it 100% correctly, but I find a uni to be easy to tie and harder to get criss-crossed on in the knot.
simplecircuit thanks for the input. I've been breaking the palomar, clinch, san diego knots. Gerald Swindle has a Wired2Fish video on a knot he uses that I'm going to try. Wondering if my issue is because I'm using braid to a fluoro leader instead of just fluoro. Thanks again.
is your leader to braid knot breaking? or is it your knot to the jig? re-reading your post, i'm guessing it's the knot to the jig... aaron martens had an interesting video about using less wraps with heavier flurocarbon due to the way the line cuts into itself with heavy fluoro, but i would think that the shorter flouro leader is absorbing ALL of the shock from your hookset since the braid has zero stretch.
simplecircuit leader knot never breaks. I use the FG knot and I don't think in 2 or so years of using it it's ever broke. It's always the knot tied to the lure. I'm only having issues with lures like jigs or texas rigs that require a heavy hookset. That's why I'm wondering if the braid is the issue. Never seem to break off on straight fluoro.
Will Fiord I fish Table Rock Lake in MO almost exclusively. We have walleye but I don't think that's the issue. I fish a lot of rocky banks/points etc which could contribute to some of the breakoffs.

In 2016 the FLW top 10 baits for Santee Cooper 3 of the guys were using jigs with Bryan Thrift in first with a jig.
I just subscribed to you guys. Your videos are always very descriptive, which is great! Definitely have learned a lot from you.
Great video guys. Couldn't agree more about keeping it simple on the jig colors and using trailers for additional / contrasting colors. Thanks for the laughs too. Keep em coming guys. Brent Schneider.
I keep a 3/8 flipn jig on at least 1 rod at all times, haven't caught many but some of my biggest came on it, thanks for the info guys!

Great vids, guys. The swing&miss at 3:52 is classic!
Great jig video. my favorite to throw. Interesting using braid to mono for leader throwing jigs. Might have to give that a try
Do they mean tying some mono to the end of the braid for a leader?
@@Ethans_Outdoors yes sir
A lot of good information to take in going to have to watch video again Great video
You are a awesome teacher brother.

I tend to fish the finesse jigs here in the Northeast. I'm going to try switching trailer colors now. Thanks for the great info as always.
I like Matt's imitation of a paca craw. A+ in my book.

Great video as alwayssss!!!!
I been throwing a 3/4oz football Jig on 50lb braid a lot this summer. I noticed on a windy day the wind really pushes around my braid while making a long cast. Any recommendations? Thanks guys awesome video 👊🏻👊🏻
Great information! Thank you!
you guys just caused me to buy a bunch of new swimbaits. lets see if i can finally catch something on Berryessa
I'm from Philadelphia and I'm trying to catch big cold water bass this winter would u suggest chucking n winding swim baits or jigs...and there's only bluegill n perch in the spot I fish???? Thx Matt 🖒🖒👊
Throw that swimbait, they'll eat it!
Awesome thx matt🖒
Awesome video. I love jigs. I caught my PB Largemouth 4.2 (may not be big in CA but in MD that's a pretty good fish) and my dad caught a 4.7 on a jig in the same day in the spring during the prespawn. But during the summer the lakes fill with grass and the only jigs u can use are swim jigs and flipping jigs on docks and laydowns. So if I want to drag something in a lake with grass, what do I use??
Very true, but if I am fishing deep scattered grass, is there something I can drag through it?
Try dragging a chatterbait and when you hit a grass patch rip it out. Works for me.
Thanks for the info!
watched before but rewatched to touch up. Haha Tim with the **** when he misses that bite had me rolling.
Great info!!! thanks for the detail!
3:53 Tim missed one in background
You just have to find your pace with a jig that’s the only thing it is trust me once you learn how to fish the jig correctly it will be a go to always
I watched this video literally 7times to punch it in my mind
Would a moderate fast action rod be good for both jig , and square bill and lipless crank bait fishing ?
Hey, awesome videos! In Sweden we mostly use 15-30 gram shads for redfin perch (we dont have bass here), or smaller cranks, lipless and bladebaits. Can you recommend one rod for shads and one for small cranks/lipless? Looking for higher priced rods, around 250-300 dollars.
Joakim Åberg hes not swedish and doesnt fish for redfin perch, how tf what he know?
What do you think about the shimano exage? I see you linked it in the description. I just have wanted to see if a good rod for how inexpensive it is
You list the Exage as your budget all around jig rod.. would you go with the 7'2 MH or the H?
What would you consider the step up in the AP jig rod?
Possibly the Dobyns Champion 734? I agree that I would like a more moderate bend and unfortunately in the Northeast
no one carry the Dobyn's line in stock to handle....
Matt you the goat good video
I have a lake thats extremely deep, clear, rocky and pressured. I would think a finesse jig would excel, but it's still really tough to get bite on. I still want to throw a jig to try and get a bigger bite but idk what to use
Joey Urick I would throw either a football jig or a big finesse jig, try to stay natural colors, and stay with a good trailer
Enjoi x Nichilo generally I use a small finesse jig with twin tail grub trailers. Gets bit, but not very often
Miss a few Tim 😃😃 great info guys as always.
Gettin jiggy with it! Good video.
na na na na na na na... na na na na na na
You guys are awesome.
What kind of jig would you use in deep hydrilla? Like 15 -20 foot. Or would that be possible to even use a jig ? I'm fishing a super clear lake with lots of deep hydrilla and natural underwater cold springs.
love the paca craw except you can't shorten them up since they are hollow. well you can but they don't stay of very well.
Hey guys long time watch of your show and just wondering what kind of reel should I use for jig fishing one that isn't super expensive?
