Can we have a discussion about vent to atmosphere vs diverter valve for the VB? And whether it's worth upgrading from OEM if tuned with increased boost. Also, walnut blasting. How often should we get it done, and is it still needed if you have a catch can/AOS system in place? Keep these awesome videos coming!
You are a fantastic interviewer. I'm a bit late to your channel, currently making a drastic career shift towards what I want to do, and I'm learning a lot from your channel. Thank you.
@@murmsuniversalrobotics3938 thank you for those kind words! The tuner talk playlist is full of amazing information. It has helped me learn a lot as well!
This was a great episode considering where I want to go with my VB. It's my DD so I don't need anything way out of the capability of stock hardware, basically a 93 protune but nothing really aggressive, I like the linear acceleration.....I just want more. Don't need to go beyond the stock transmission, maybe just an AOS for longevity. But I want don't want to push it beyond it's reliability "comfort zone."
The timing of this video is just perfect, as a sort of follow up to the Intake Shootout I’ve watched 3 times already. The analogy to the podcast format is an apt one, as these in-depth discussions require time to develop. I believe that you found an interesting niche here, to complement the tons of content being posted about product releases, ICE operation or performance part installation. I’m a big fan of podcasts, so this was a great addition to your channel, as far as I’m concerned. Keep it up!
Thank you! I try to have a good variety of content on the channel so it keeps it fresh for you and me. TunerTalk is definitely a love letter to my current subscribers and to myself as the videos don't have a major out reach (idk if it's just my titles or maybe I need to change up the thumbnails). I'm ok with that for now because it's valuable information and I'm glad it at least gets consumed in some capacity. I have toyed with the idea of making an actual podcast just for this. I think once I hit 19 I'll probably do that for the peeps who like to listen while working out or working or something.
Another great Tuner Talk! I have been patiently sitting on the fence waiting for this type of solid information to come out. Keep up the good work you guys are doing.
Thank you for the support! Hopefully you were able to get some questions answered with this one. A lot has happened since the last tuner talk which made this one of the best ones so far. I think a slightly longer cadence between videos is good because then we have some real meaty topics to discuss.
He sounds like a tuner I feel safe to bring my car to and not worry about any unreliability. I like the approach he has especially how he looks out and wouldn’t want to give someone a car with a possible unreliable engine. Prime motoring is close to me and heard JRtuned is fantastic, maybe getting him in a tuner talk would be cool , maybe see how is approach is. Those are the two tuners I am torn between. Either way people from experience will say both get the thumbs up
@@HeavyMetalWRX haha honestly haven't looked into it much yet since I have not had the check engine light yet for cat below threshold. I'm totally jinxed now thanks guys lol. I have a few ideas that worked for me on the bmw n54/n55 platform when I had a 135i.
I was just thinking about adding fuel injectors into the intake runners. It's really the only way to get more fuel as the DI injectors are almost maxed out at the power levels we are seeing now. Bonus + and it cleans the intake valves! I'm thinking a piggy back ECU to control the injectors in the intake... Just spit balling but its crazy I was just thinking about this sh!t...
Its a good series but we have to get questions from the community and even have big things to talk about. The time between this talk and the last one lead this episode to be so good. We had so many relevant topics to discuss.
I have some questions that hopefully could get addressed, next tuner talk if it hasnt gotten addressed yet. 1. If one waits until warranty is done, what should one do to best go down tuning route? 2. Are there any cons to "overbuilding" an engine? I.e. only plan to make 400 whp/wtq put stronger piston rkds, 600 rated clutch, etc. Thank you, seriously love and appreciate these informational videos
E85 is unavailable in my area (best is 94 octane). I would assume my limit won't be fuel quanity but more ignition/turbo limit? Also, curious what is limiting the rpm of the engine.
Absolutely awesome watch and great topics. Massive cheers to you both! Such a shame we didn't get direct and port injection, well that and an input to use for flex fueling. Otherwise showing the fa24 is a pretty rad engine
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. You should check out the other tuner talks as well, one of the episodes I actually interviewed Smeedia. Now he has a VB 😎
Watching this in small chunks; have you found out from ETS about what cat is in their J-pipe in their Garrtt aftermarket upgrade kit? This question is because of your earlier in the video discussion about 300 vs 400 cat in the J-pipe.
It was interesting to hear about the differences between california 91, vs 91, 93 etc. Are you able to ask Graham more about this? Living in CA, I never really knew there was any difference between CA 91 and other 91 gas, I just thought 91 octane would pretty much be the same. From what I'm hearing, it seems like CA 91 isn't as good. Would be interesting to have a "scale" of how it is compared to other states' gas, like is 89 octane from other states better for making power compared to CA 91 octane? and what causes CA 91 octane to be bad compared to other states (I'm guessing something related to emissions)?
I have a question for the next one. This is my first Turbo car I’d love some tips on possibly driving and RPM ranges. Basically what habits you may have from a NA sports car that you shouldn’t do on a Turbo Car? Love the long form videos love the questions you have. I finally got my VB about 800miles in. Already buying parts too. I’m out in CA and didn’t know the gas was such an issue, but I was going to go for the E40 tune with Boosted anyways, plenty of stations around me that have E85 pumps.
Yeah definitely don’t be under 2.5k-3k rpm in 5th or 6th gear and floor it. Downshift and floor it above those rpm ranges. You don’t want to be asking for a ton of boost at a really low rom. Cruising in those taller gears and asking for 1-4psi or whatever is fine but any more and you’re stressing out the engine.
in the intercooler discussion, why would it not be a good idea to do both upgrade the topmount to the aftermarket say COBB one with the included shroud, AND add a small or large frontmount also?
I guess technically you could run 2 intercoolers but I'd imagine the benefit would be severely reduced, if you could even fit 2 intercoolers. Basically the options you have are replacing the stock intercooler with a slightly bigger top mounted intercooler. Or you replace the stock intercooler with a front mounted intercooler.
Do you have any VB cars running a water-methanol system instead of E50-E85? How is that system working with the VB? If you don't have any VB's working with a water-methanol system, what is your educated thoughts about how one would work on the direct and port injected FA24?
Ahhh just watched through that section of your video learning that the WRX FA24 doesn't have the port injection, but can the BRZ FA24 which has both direct and port injection be bolt on swap option to the WRX's OEM non-port injected FA24?
Sooo, if the BRZ uses the same FA24 as the WRX, then in theory, a manifold from a BRZ could fit and we could have both port and direct injection…correct?
Miss seeing these, hope you are doing well :) Apologize if I missed it, were the head studs lifting every discussed in this series? Pretty sure I listened to 1-5 and couldn’t find it talked about.

Hmm I don't know if that's possible. What the intake is doing is basically allowing the turbo to breathe better. The aide effect of the straighter pipe and cone filter is the noise.

ETS should refund all the money of people who bought their product thinking it was safe on a stock tune. I have it, but had my car tuned first with jb4 then now with drunkmann tunes. But that is totally wrong what has happened with that intake.
I mean, at the time no one really knew I guess, but if you Dyno the car you can tell the afr. I'm not sure what happened there. I just know that ETS is probably tired of me dragging them around on my channel 😂
@HeavyMetalWRX I mean I talked them and they said that they engineered the intake to be the same circumference of the airbox so the MAF would read the same and no tune was needed because the AFR would match stock. I'd say that's a big F up.

It's good to hear the CEL problem being acknowledged. I bought the ETS J pipe from Graham when I had my car tuned. It doesn't only throw a CEL on long highway drives. It does EVERY DAY, sometimes just on short drives to the store. I would not have purchased this part if I knew the consequence. Regardless, let's hear about solutions. Graham suggested a spacer. What else can we do to fix this problem? It's not one we should tolerate with a daily driver. By the way, I called ETS and they were clueless. Is anybody working on a fix?
