The reason the ESG cult have to create division & racism within these hobbies is because these hobbies create unity, friendship, & camaraderie & they cannot allow that to exist. So they will always try to poison the well.
Much as I appreciate the sentiment, it's because they get paid to do it by people who have convinced themselves that being selectively racist, sexist, and classicist is "good, actually", on the mistaken premise that doing so creates equity. Thing is, they wind up pitching many of the same arguments the Nazis did, such as the notion of society having been unfairly rigged by one race to benefit itself against all others.
I got into an argument briefly on x yesterday with a fella who thought they should sue Goodman and their sponsor for discrimination. This is a good example of why I have no “plan” to gain prominence or success by writing for others. Total Party Skills has no advertising and I don’t crowd source. I use public domain art and my own rules set and am content with slow burn growth. I only pander to myself and am now sitting on a catalog of 50 rpg books like Girls Gone Vampire and Lady Spy Detective and Escape from Planet Matriarchy, and other pulpy goodness. Eventually someone will notice. I’m pretty cancel proof (fingers crossed) and part of maintaining that is avoiding being involved in stuff like this.
I came home yesterday from attending Dragonmeet yesterday where there were people of every walk of life playing games, attending seminars and buying various Geek merch all with zero drama. Why can't all Cons be like that?
I host random adventures for years here in liberal Seattle at the game stores - 95% who attend are males (19 out of 20) - and easily 80% (very conservative estimate) are white. LGBxyz, sensitivity or inclusiveness is never mentioned. These gaming companies are catering to posts online that are not their core sales - the 1 in 33 - and should focus on the core potential sales of the 32 of the 33. When companies don't, then their sales are expunged - example of how catering to a small set that doesn't purchase your product: Budweiser lost $400 million dollars in sales, Target loss over $20 Billion in market cap and sales, JCPenney is in debt $500 million dollars, etc.
I can see why they changed it, there is the argument that "a diverse panel can show that anyone can make an RPG". But I prefer a professional electrician than an okay electrician that's part of a minority.
Diversity and Dragons went over who the new panelists were, 1 of them was a game designer, the rest were side personnel ala social media manager and the like
If you want more diversity in the hobby space it needs to come from the ground up - equality of opportunity rather than equity of outcome. Who better to instruct new talent on what it takes to be successful in a field than those who have had previous and proven success in the field? To exclude people based solely on the colour of their skin is not promoting diversity, it's sanctioning discrimination.
Exactly! I don't care what these folks look like, do they make good games? I love the DCC system, and the book was written by white guys. I don't love it because of this, they are separate things. I absolutely love Cyberpunk 2020, not because Mike Pondsmith is black, but because he made a fantastic game. These people that shriek about these things should never have been acknowledged in the first place. Oh, and they are all white, woke, Leftists. Every one that I've seen.
I don't really care about this panel in any of its incarnations. I am neither big on respecting people just because they are old or have been there for the longes time. Yet, even someone like me can recognise that these people deserve to be on this panel. That they have experience. That they have knowledge to share. That they were there, holding on, when it was not as "cool" or mainstream to be in the industry. They deserve those spots and to take them away in such a manner... MAN! The people who were angry about the panel, are only now appearing and speaking in the public... ...because it is safe.
Nailed it sir. I was going to attend the online event too. Not anymore. Maybe someone else can get another event going for Indie creators. Someone with good taste in hats...?
I look at it like this. I would not turn down the opportunity to study at the feet of a master who would be able to further my personal knowledge or success, even if it were someone I didn't actually like that much. You have so much more to lose by not taking advantage of their wisdom or experience.
Goodman Games could have easily solved this dilemma. Set up the tables, and chairs. Pass out character sheets, dice, pens, ect. All of those whom are in favor of protesting for diversity take a seat. Company affiliates sit down, and play referee. Now if there is those whom are not diverse enough deciding to not show up. That is their problem. It was a convention right? TTRPGs have a history of people gathering to play the game with others. Those people playing are being included in the gameplay.
Before Critical Role and Stranger Things, virtually all gamers were all fringe people and many had a degree of dysfunction. In the days of OD&D we were all just dysfunctional nerds. We came from all parts of society. Nobody really cared about race age gender or anything else. It just wasn't a thing. It was like sharing an umbrella on a rainy day you were just glad to be out of the rain and you didn't care who was holding the umbrella they were sharing with you.
The saying "Go Woke, Go Broke" holds true even without the anti-Woke movements. You can either succeed by hiring the best persons for the job or you can look moral while being a failure.
Hahaha. And we need to state the obvious: Goodman put all their top creators and employees on that first poster, the famous ones who make the award winning modules. This was an advert for GG and their products. Second the OSR is overwhelmingly male and the outrage came from outside the 'Other camp' within the gaming space.
I swear meritocracy is a curse word for the woke crowd. For people who claim to be against sexism / racism, they want everything to be about the way one looks rather than their experience.
You absolutely have a worthwhile take on this! I got the email of the summit which I found to be great! I love Goodman Games & I have almost all their modules with the exception of a few. I buy the modules because they're short, playtested & written by fantastic writers. I can easily mix & match up short content to create my own sick campaign out of and the commitment isnt like 2 years. There's a world of adventure out there, i dont need to be trapped in a 4 hour session just to decide we're taking the railroad. Their third party support is wonderful unlike any other except Exhaulted Funeral which I love as well. Anyways, I got the email because Im a DCC diehard & when I opened the email & saw the panel, I suddenly lost interest. Ive always felt a little bit of lack in their diversity & the email proved it. It doesnt make me love Goodman Games any less, i was just like "where the fk is Marzio Muscedere?!" Then moved on, deleted he email & went back to studying zines, badass zines whose writers I have no idea of their race & I dont even care. That stuff doesnt interest me, its all about the art. There are amazing writers for that panel that have better stuff than the original guys on it, & they're of other ethnic backgrounds. Im not mad, its just embarrassingly obvious.
I love every writer on the first panel. I also love Bob the World builder & his channel as well, but he's not on that panel to give us writing tips, he's the face for newbies & the younger crowd & I feel Marzio's writing skills for Goodman Games to be more relevant. Just sayin.
The problem with pointing out the obvious - that the gaming RPG industry has never been racist or sexist - is that the instant rejoinder from "progressives" is "the entirety of society is racist and sexist, therefore so is the gaming RPG industry". There is no level of reality which defeats a dogmatically-centered mind other than a direct and irrefutable personal experience which contradicts the dogma in its entirety - anything short of that merely produces denial and retrenchment. You might as well tell a Southern Baptist that God does not exist, as they throw snakes at you commanding your demons to begone.
Identitarian! Once again, the wokescalds demand inclusion, nay participation awards and recognition for having been born with certain characteristics instead of ability! Hands up those surprised that hands-on experience and proven track records and valued less than *insert "minority" term here*...... (TV and movie clips are on point today, well done Sir)
The issue comes that intersectionalism in particular and a lot of the typical white supremacy groups come from the same root. The same premise. That, for one reason or another, anthroposociology is true. That color does define success either by its own properties, or by systems. In this model, both sides see white people as the superior race. The difference is what they do about it. Also, I'm holding back the urge to mock you for the African American in the UK comment... LOL!!!
At least the White supremacist Varg Vikernes made the MYFAROG RPG, reviewed extensively by Unscripted and Unchained GM. The activist Woke crumble into angst from triggering, and waste too much time on protesting and scouring the Internet for things they don't like, and lack the (dare I say it) DISCIPLINE to write anything worthwhile. That's something ELSE they might learn from older generations.
Ok. I haven't gotten very far into this video yet. I will let it play, and see what you have to say. But Goodman Games?! Bigots? Pshaw. All those faces I see there are people that work at Goodman. Are those the event organizers, perhaps? I dunno: a fair amount of the art inside Goodman Games DCC products features obviously black people as protagonists. My copy of the DCC rulebook has a black woman casting a spell on the front cover as the only "player character". One of their prominently advertised 3rd party settings (which Goodman sells on their website) is an ancient world Africa circa 500AD. They encouraged a Kenyan (wait, might have been Nigerian... Central Africa at any rate) gentleman when he was just starting out and couldn't find any players, then he came back a few years later and published a couple small zines that were DCC versions of legendary creatures from his tribal culture. They still sell those zines on the Goodman site. Goodman platformed the hell out of Janelle Jaquays--an openly trans woman whose name was male (I don't remember it, Peter maybe?...) when she worked for Judges Guild in the 70s. Goodman were the ones that pioneered the use of her name as a verb--to Jaquays a dungeon--and they openly discussed her story online, and I think Joe Goodman himself interviewed her. They hail Janelle Jaquays as one of the unsung heros of Old School rpg, who never gets the credit she deserves. Ten bucks says she is one of the people that will be featured as an award winner in this event. I go into the remainder of this video with eyebrows raised.
