Best explanation I've heard.
agreed exept that conditions of day would be good to know also... but guess it longer if windy day.
Not really. He’s implying the anchor is supposed to lay at the bottom and grab into the sand. That’s not how anchors work
@@murialgoldman5670 then hows it supposed to work? And don't try and tell me that anchor weighs it down because no the fuck it doesn't
@@murialgoldman5670you’re thinking of chain anchors, where the chain keeps it in place. This is a digging anchor, where it actually holds onto the seabed or sand
@@murialgoldman5670please elaborate..

This is knowledge I absolutely won’t use in my everyday life but it’s knowledge I didn’t have before that could absolutely come in handy at some point in my life. Thanks brother!!
My thoughts exactly - I'll probably never own a boat much less need an anchor like that, but what if? 😅
zombie apocalypse is coming you'll need it for sure 🤣

Great explanation young Man!
This is the best explanation ive ever heard online thank you for sharing with the uninitiated
Very true. Big ships don’t rely on anchor to hold it in place, buts it’s chain which lays parallel between the boat and anchor
😂😂😂 Perpendicular?
@@JohnnyB732no
Yes. Perpendicular
The chain needs to lay on the bottom. When 2 things are lined up side-by-side, that is parallel, not perpendicular.
@@MrT------5743 ur comment said parallel between the boat and anchor, which makes us think u mean parallel TO the boat and anchor. I assume u mean parallel to the ground which would make sense but it was just worded pretty poorly. Perpendicular to the boat (probably) and parallel to the ground.
Ive been needing this tutorial for 16 years 😂
Pretty sure that's on the boating license test.

@@Joker-11B-SYLV my dad taught himself and i just watched him then started helping him and doing it myself. We were just ignorant, didnt know to let out extra line.
Oh, I was wondering why my Danforth anchor wasn’t setting, thank you!
I learned something new today. Thank you.
I'll remember this when I get a boat
I always use the 7:1 ratio for how much scope to use. For every foot of depth, you put out 7 ft of scope. So in 10ft of water, your scope, anchor chain/rope, should be 70ft. I've ridden out some nasty storms on anchor, some of which over 100kts of wind. Not fun but my anchor held great.
Absolutely perfect explanation!
Anchoring techniques are fundamental to all boating
Simple explanation and right to the point. Good job!
great advice for first time boat owners
Let me know when you find a fisherman patient enough to do all these steps😂
Oh yes this is why I’ve been struggling to set my anchor lately 🙂
I 100% need this information and I won’t let anyone say otherwise.
I don’t even own a boat and this made sense
I've never been on a boat in my life but i really enjoyed the video ❤
I anchor in the Napa river sometimes. It really helps to have a boat’s length of chain as well. The current here is NO JOKE.
Best explanation I’ve heard. Most people just babble on and on and literally never seem to give an answer. I’m a new sailor with a 21 foot sailboat with this exact anchor and I will definitely be using this information! Thank you.
Love to see knowledge like this passed on to the next younger generation. It's how things are supposed to be.....
As a new boater I thank you.
A longer length of chain would also be beneficial- great job my guy!
Not really. The chain is far too short to matter. The chain is there to avoid cutting the line
@@ThatSBI think that’s his point. The chain acts as a damper and the extra weight reduces overall pull on the anchor. You f you don’t have enough chain then all the force goes into un-setting the anchor which may cause it to drag.
Obviously the lighter the boat, the less chain in general is required but the principle is the same.
As a commercial fisherman I approve of this message
Well you need more chain too In ocean currents sometimes the rope will float the anchor and won’t give you the proper angle usually good to have at least 3/4 of your boats length
Correctly explained, well done man
I heard it's the chain surface area / weight that is the true anker. The anker itself is to stop the chain from slipping as you lay out more on the floor.
That's for large ships.
Most anchors use the chain as a key part to working correctly and holding the boat in place. It’s also additional weight holding you in place
This 15 year old knows his stuff
Good to know man thank you
On small boats this may be true but on bigger boats it’s different. On bigger boats like catamarans and yachts it’s the chain that holds them in place not the anchor. The anchor is only there to hold the end of the chain in place.
The moment he said "rope length" And seeing the rope he used, Seaman would know he talk about small boats and not big boats or ship.
Ships of course would used long chain and big boats would use different rope and bigger, like ship's cargo rope.
Edit: for anyone wondering, big boats and Ships anchor is not just "big heavyweight head" But what acting as Anchor and "Anchoring" The big boats and ship in place is the "Big Head" + the weight of the extra Chain and Big Heavy Rope.
Kinda like this
∠)__-------------------------------------─── (Ship is here)
Yeah, anchor did not stop right below the ship. Anchor is relatively far behind the ship before it was able to "anchor" the ship.
I don’t know why this was in my feed as I don’t deal with boats but your explanation of this made me wanna watch some videos on anchors
Young people gettin smarter and smarter, who woulda thought so much people would get taught how to properly use this anchor by this young man
If a person needed told by this youngin, they probably shouldnt have a boat.
Why? What does age have to do with anything? Could be a person just moved to a coastal city while this guy been there his life and that’s just circumstances. Knowledge is knowledge, it isn’t less credible _just_ because someone is younger.
That is actually how all anchors are supposed to set, even a mushroom anchor needs more line, whether it is chain or rope to hold it in place, so this is excellent information to have, great demonstration 👍
As someone who has never been on a boat, I approve.
Perfect explanation and visual demonstration! Top marks!
As someone who lives inland in England and never owned a boat I do honestly appreciate you wisdom because I would never have realised how an anchor works ,I allways thought it was weight or you hoped it caught on something , Good video.
I know absolutely nothing about boats or boating, except now I know how to set a Danforth anchor. Another fine addition to the collection of random knowledge I have
I’ve always kinda understood how anchors work, but all those animations were never that realistic. Thank you so much for the demonstration brother 💯
you are a natural educator keep up the great work!
I'll use this next time I'm setting my Danforth Anchor, thanks!
Never dropped an anchor or been sailing in 40 years. But here I am learning about Danforth anchors at 2am.
I’ve heard on large ships, the anchor is to hold the chain in place. The weight and friction of the chain on the bottom is what actually holds it in place.
Of course I have no clue whether rope plays any role here besides what the guy told us.
As someone who does mooring plans for much bigger vessels, this is pretty spot on. When you start working with massive anchors and 2-3” diameter chain, the chain plays a big factor in setting the anchor properly. The heavy chain will settle into the mud with the anchor and is an important part of a mooring systems overall hold capacity. This type of anchor is classified as a drag anchor.
I love how it actually works perfectly the first time
This is 100% correct. So many people do this wrong strictly because they have never been shown/told the correct way to set an anchor
I don't know anything about anchors but I can say he is perfectly explaining this.
This is so useful for all of us people anchoring boats
me who doesn’t have a boat:
*”INTERESTING”*
Very good, idk when I’ll use this helpful information but now i know i have it
The chain is actually a weight which helps get that angle too! Great work !
Great explanation it’s funny that a lot of people think that the weight of the anchor alone will hold the boat and the chain at the end of the anchor is extremely important the anchor will not catch with out it
Took me so long to figure this out great explanation
I don’t even own a boat, but hear I am learning about anchors. 😆
Thank you man, i needed this video
I was thinking about this because I have same thing 😂 and this man came up on my screen ❤ love you man 😎
Knowledge about something I have no clue about or anything about boating at that but his explanation was soo good I now know how to properly set a danforth anchor
Never knew there were anchors like this. Pretty cool! And good explanation!
Cute af, where are you from?
Thank you youtube shorts! I don't go in water but I like looking at it!😂
So many don't know the chain does the work not the anchor....great explanation with the math
Sometimes there is a weight where the rope meets the chain. This adds additional help in pulling the anchor horizontal
This kids know he's work.
Because his is Exactly how it's done.
Great video and great crew out there, we rent our pontoon boats from you guys and have never had a problem.
well made, quick and easy to understand with great visual presentation
Aaah yes... My... Danforth anchor... THE danforth anchor...the one that I DEFINITELY have ...
Not that I'll ever need this information but thank you.
I’ve never used an anchor but now I’ll know simple straightforward explanation 👍
I used to keep one of those in my truck, worked great for winching out when there were no trees around.
As someone who is currently sitting on my bed at 2 am, I found this information very helpful.
As a person who went on a yacht and may or may not have accidentally charged its course by leaning on the steering wheel, this is very valuable info that I hope to use
I'm sure this is tremendously helpful to somebody.
The chain is part of the friction of the setup too
I read that its not actually the anchor but the weight of the heavy chains that keep big ships anchored. The anchor just helps in lowering the chains. Obviously this is a different anchor, i am talking about the classic ones.
Great video, and demonstration, I’ll know this if I get a boat lol
As a fully qualified sunbather I can confidently say this video is 100% accurate
Sounds like someone read the instructions good Job bro 👏
Most people don't realize that the actual anchor doesn't stop you, it's mostly the weight of "chain" not rope. That causes friction on the bottom of the sand that eventually leads you to a stop.
That’s for the info. Finally learn something through endless scrolling.
i have never needed to know how to use an anchor but i feel so educated. im buying a boat.
I don't boat but I did learn something so I liked and subscribed 😂
I was wondering why it would never catch, thanks guy!
Great explanation!!
I have no boat, I will never have a boat, yet here I am intrigued
Good explanation, now I just need a boat 🥲
Salute! Hope for the young generation in the future
As someone who is terrified of the ocean and doesn’t have any intention on going anywhere near it this guy almost makes me want to
Great explanation❤
I learned something new today
Bro must be Aquaman to see through water so clearly.
This was so helpful
Multiply 3 to 7. With this kind of precision I will be anchoring in no time!
As a dude with no boat or anchor I can confirm that this video is helpful
I'm a nerd: the anchor is basically just a hook and does little of the actual stopping, it's why anchors are so (relatively) small, what actually keeps the boat in place is the drag of the rope in the water.
Did u know, that in massive vessels with humongous chains and anchors the anchor isn’t Wuts doing the stoping, but the friction of the chain and the see bed.
as someone who doesn’t own a boat, doesn’t go on boats, never will have to use an anchor in her life, i watched this whole thing and feel confident enough to do it if i ever need too lol
At last! That was it! Thanks!!
Thank you. I'll try doing that on my lawn
