I always use the 7:1 ratio for how much scope to use. For every foot of depth, you put out 7 ft of scope. So in 10ft of water, your scope, anchor chain/rope, should be 70ft. I've ridden out some nasty storms on anchor, some of which over 100kts of wind. Not fun but my anchor held great.

    • @JimboJet737

@@ThatSBI think that’s his point. The chain acts as a damper and the extra weight reduces overall pull on the anchor. You f you don’t have enough chain then all the force goes into un-setting the anchor which may cause it to drag.
Obviously the lighter the boat, the less chain in general is required but the principle is the same.

On small boats this may be true but on bigger boats it’s different. On bigger boats like catamarans and yachts it’s the chain that holds them in place not the anchor. The anchor is only there to hold the end of the chain in place.

The moment he said "rope length" And seeing the rope he used, Seaman would know he talk about small boats and not big boats or ship.
Ships of course would used long chain and big boats would use different rope and bigger, like ship's cargo rope.
Edit: for anyone wondering, big boats and Ships anchor is not just "big heavyweight head" But what acting as Anchor and "Anchoring" The big boats and ship in place is the "Big Head" + the weight of the extra Chain and Big Heavy Rope.
      Kinda like this
      ∠)__-------------------------------------─── (Ship is here)
Yeah, anchor did not stop right below the ship. Anchor is relatively far behind the ship before it was able to "anchor" the ship.

Of course I have no clue whether rope plays any role here besides what the guy told us.

  • @BobSmith-vx3kn

As someone who does mooring plans for much bigger vessels, this is pretty spot on. When you start working with massive anchors and 2-3” diameter chain, the chain plays a big factor in setting the anchor properly. The heavy chain will settle into the mud with the anchor and is an important part of a mooring systems overall hold capacity. This type of anchor is classified as a drag anchor.
