    Great Q&A, feels refreshing after constantly watching 1h in-depth lectures about astheatics of various video games.
    BTW. Your S.W.A.T. 4 video took me off guard, 'cause I didn't knew, that this tactical shooter can have so much storytelling and details packed into those very "compact" levels.

      @migueeeelet 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      SWAT is one of those games where all that kinda detail is practically a must. Reminds me of the wall graffiti convos in Left 4 Dead. Without those details, those slow areas/slow games would just become boring and slow to play

    Pathologic would be a very unique experience to delve into.
    I think you'll find a similar feeling to the one you described for Far Cry 2, a game that lets you get lost in its world and experience some truly surreal moments of fighting a very dangerous enemy that you don't understand, only prevailing by never giving up in the face of complete despair and hopelessness.
    It pulls the worst out of you, but encourages you to be the best that you can be.

    Max Payne series, particularly Max Payne 3, is ripe for the picking for you. It's oozing with artistic embellishes, and the change of scenario from the comic book Noir setting of the first two to the third games Brazil setting dealing with greed, corruption, violence and poverty is perfect. But I am biased because it is one of my favourite pure action games

    • @emulation2369
      @emulation2369 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Max Payne 3 feels completely different to the series in every way, it lacks everything that made MP games, well Max Payne games. It's not bad, but even Max himself is written as a different person.

    • @JCRF
      @JCRF 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@emulation2369 Agree and disagree, it toned down the comic book aesthetic and Norse pagan vibe for more of real to the touch atmosphere, while still keeping his character and a pretty vicious and dark setting despite the sunshine and coconut trees

      Everyone who played the first two hate the third, and everyone like myself who have only played max payne 3 absolutely love it. I get that the first two are landmark games with lots of memories associated but that third ones gameplay simply cant be beat, its so god damned fun

    • @JCRF
      @JCRF 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@yungoldman2823 I've played all three, especially love the first game, but MP3 just hits right and I think the corruption of Brazilian politics/underworld was a perfect new backdrop for Max. And the gunplay and physics/animations are just beautiful. James McCaffrey had an amazing performance too, just amazing. If you have ever watched movies like Elite Squad or seen documentaries on crime in Brazil, or know about it's politics, it actually makes the game even better knowing those details. Very well written

    • @FaceFullofEyes
      @FaceFullofEyes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@JCRF I played all three games in order and didn't have a problem with MP3. It feels like a reboot-sequel, considering how much the aesthetic has changed. But I absolutely hate the fact that it had so much cutscenes and that they interrupted the action all the time. I loved the Man on Fire feeling it had. I definitely plan a video on it.

    Moby Dick is such a great book, it's hard to believe a fellow American wrote it. The prose is so rich; every phrase is a pleasure to say - even (or especially) the squeezing of the sperm. Never been a huge Conrad fan, but props for writing a brilliant story in his third(?) language.
    On the off chance you've never read it, Don Quijote has a similar mixture of humor and gravity as Moby Dick does. A deeper cut for someone who likes HoD would be "Confessions of a Justified Sinner" by Hogg. It's almost a proto-Dostoyevsky thriller, rife with similar themes of doppelgangers, predestination, etc. It's either the length of a novella or else it's so well paced that you can breeze through it. Love your work btw!

    i will gladly support you as a creator. your videos are wonderful and you show me a perspective to the engagement of games i never really expressed but always felt in the back of my mind. in a way, its almost as if you are justifying my undying passion for video games, wondering how this medium could be further explored in ways that have yet to be seen. to philosophise on the act of playing a video game, and wondering if such a medium could ever truly explore big picture commentary on life and what makes it so hauntingly beautiful, and the impact storytelling can have on an individual and the long lasting effects of art. while i dont think games are of the stature of other forms of media and art, and im unsure if this generation could provide such an experience, i do like to wonder, and i feel as if the one game to shatter the glass ceiling of video games and completely flip the medium on its head and explore themes presented in a way humanity has yet to experience is so close yet so very far.
    until such a time comes, conversations like these carries gaming to remain worth discussing, at the very least to me, and i hope to one day also share my thoughts and views on gaming and art and to express myself and perspective to the world.

    I love your SWAT 4 video, it's genuinely one of my favorite videos essays. Which begs the question if you're ever going to do a video on Ready Or Not when it fully releases and is worthy of a Aesthetic video. I do like some the concepts that RoN going for, the more darker crimes that they depict is a breath of fresh air in this bland state of the gaming industry. But time will tell.

    • @FaceFullofEyes
      @FaceFullofEyes  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you. I did start writing a script on Ready or Not, right after the SWAT 4 video, thinking it would be a nice challenge to try to analyse a game that's still in development, but ultimately dropped it for something else. At that time the best thing about it was its addictive, punishing loop. Only implications of environmental storytelling and an overarching narrative. So I decided to not to do it. Haven't played it since, but from the update notes and some photos I've seen, it seems like they've pushed things in the right direction. Still, us who are hoping for a true SWAT spiritual successor won't really know if the game is that untill the carieer mode is out.

    About the ultimate medium argument, combining tons of things doesn't make a medium better that all these separate elements (since people saying that usually bring up the idea that the mix of interactivity, words, visuals and sounds make video games unique and better). A quick comparison with reading/writing makes it obvious that video games are too flawed to be considered as such :
    You learn to read and write in school (or in whichever community you belong to), it has been around for thousands of years, in almost every single culture on the planet, and literally a single human being can write absolutely anything in terms of scope, style and subject
    .
    Meanwhile, video games have been around for a couple, microscopic decades; very, very few people have the technical skills to make video game, and not all styles and scopes are available to a single person because of the money required to create and sell a lifelike/massive game (An single indie dev cannot make an epic like RDR2, Tolkien can write The Lord of the Rings). More and more people can play games thanks to mobile phones, but video games are still a very exclusive medium that not all cultures and people can have access to or afford, and it relies too heavily on technology (and that may lead to it disappearing in the following decades because of component shortages as natural ressources dwindle and the race for technological "progress" for entertainment enters in direct conflict with our survival as a species) to be independent and long lasting.
    So a medium with so many creative, production, cultural, accessibility and even existential limitations cannot be the ultimate art form. In this argument, it's not about one's enjoyment of games, it's about recognizing that it has so many barriers in place that make it impersonnal, and distant from one's humanity. You can express humanity in games, but it takes a lot of effort, too much in my opinion.
    Although, in retrospect, "Play" and "Games" can be in that conversation (if it needs to happen, which it doesn't, but still), just not video games, which is only a small and recent sub-category of the human practice of play.

    • @FaceFullofEyes
      @FaceFullofEyes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Brilliantly said. Great observations. It had never crossed my mind to consider just that simple comparison - we learn to speak from our parents, no technology needed and start to use it almost immediately, often creatively, as children. But I also notice video games getting more and more ingrained into human experience, including childhood, through phones, video games made specifically for children, etc. So, I think, in case the worst case scenario you've mentioned doesn't start any time soon, video games could have at least a status similar to films, perhaps not across the whole world, but also not in the West exclusively. Another thing to consider is that a lot of people are visual types so this might help this process. This is why I mentioned Inside for example, it's like a much more modern cave painting. No dialogues, no multiple choices, but still communicates a lot of information to the player through the interaction of player's input and visual feedback.

    • @HopefulPablito
      @HopefulPablito 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@FaceFullofEyes Thanks for the answer !
      Absolutely, it's not that video games as a whole cannot communicate information effectively, they can, that's one of their biggest strength : giving feedback to the player/user (as you mention with the example of Inside).
      My own reservation lie in the range of people they can reach in their current form because of the fact that they are largely harnessed to the entertainement industry from almost day one; unlike painting, music, writing... which (at least the way I see it, I might be completely wrong) all had centuries and even milleniums of evolution in the wild, free from economic/marketing pressure. Video Games are probably the ultimate medium of the capitalist age, that's for sure. But if we're talking about a more all encompassing time period, yeah, they're getting closer to other young but slightly older mediums like cinema, but they don't have the immediateness of tracing something on whatever surface to paint/write or just opening up your mouth to sing. Because these don't require a complex interface, they can happen from human to human face to face, or just on your own.
      But, it's also about what societies value as the primary type of communication, soon enough, if big tech continues to gain more power and a bigger place in people's life (for better and for worse), kids will learn how to code in school, because informatic will be more prevalent, and as such making games and understanding video games should be easier for more and more people
      The advent of accessibility options in the last decade, of indie games that are games for everybody (I'm not talking about a hypthetical single game designed to appeal to everyone, but about a multitude of games designed by different people, for different people)... also helps brigde that gap. Also, the fact that they are more room for games that are "not games" (according to some dumbasses) because they don't require any of the skill old school video games traditions required, lowering the level of entry into the medium because they don't require as much media litteracy (Once you understand how to move the camera, you can play Gone Home, you don't need to learn about combos, meta game, the codes of a specific genre of game...) which opens the door to people who aren't solely competitive minded, who are too young or old (or just don't care) to handle the overstimulation of what video games have largely been until now.
      But yeah, until all of the things I've mentionned happen (or continue to develop), video games are limited by all it takes to practice or create them, which are so, so many layers.
      Video games are mainstream as the entertainment industry understands the term, but as fare as becoming universal (as in something universally, humanly essential) ? Seems impossible. But I do believe that some parts of the industry/creators are on the right path though.

    Speaking of games portraying ideas, Blood (1998) does a lot with little, especially Death Wish, a mod made by one bloke in over a decade. May not be your exact taste, but it seeems when there's fewer pixels every single pixel counts more, and Blood has an artistic style that is integrated in to the game, everything so well comes together.

    Probably would not work well for cutscenes, but for the regular gameplay just moving the camera and replacing the player with character models and animations might be doable, atleast in a rougth way to get the impression of what it would be like

    I would urge you to watch Heat by Michael Mann if you havent had a chanse recently man. It reminds me of the way you look at things, when i analise it.
    Keep up the best work.

    This comment isn't long and detailed as to why the tv show "the wire" should be covered on your channel. But I would really enjoy seeing it; the wire is often forgotten and you could also cover "the corner".
    Instead of portraying a life of action through crime, (shows such as breaking bad in which everything is very dramatized) the wire shows you the brutality of the so-called "game" and how the city of Baltimore is failing within each season due to the war on drugs, the economy, the politics, the education system, and the journalism.
    You don't only get to see Baltimore through the lens of a police department but also through the eyes of each topic covered, namely the criminals. Cover the wire. There aren't many reviews on the show itself and it fits your type of video style.

    As someone that doesn't rely on TH-cam to eat and pay rent, I really feel the inspiration issue you mentioned. I always make it clear that it's a hobby firstly so people don't pressure me to make content. Timelines are inconsequential when you can put maximum effort and love into a video. There's no rush and I think everyone here is patient enough to wait for more of your superb videos, my friend. As I've said in another one of your videos, you definitely deserve more traffic and subscribers on your channel. Bit of a hidden gem at the moment.

    • @FaceFullofEyes

      I like it myself, but I'm afraid not much can be done as I think it was demonitized because of the nazi imagery, and the game is full of it.
