New Layout Build - Farm Bridge Detail

  • This one follows on from the previous video concerning the scenic break at the countryside section of the layout. With most of the basics complete I turn my attention to the much needed details, trees and bushes. I also complete some more work to better hide the transition for this end of the layout.
    Always more bits to do but I'm pleased with the progress so far. I'm looking forward to continuing the scenery further up the line. Enjoy

    Richard your standard of modelling is absolutely top notch…but the relatable way in which you explain your techniques really is the icing on the cake. I used to visit and photograph from a bridge in Lower Basildon, in the Thames Valley in the early eighties. This scene is highly reminiscent of that location as I remember it.

      To the point that, when he changed to 'real footage' at 12'39", for a few seconds I thought it was back to his model!

    My wife happened to come up behind me as I had momentarily paused the video on a shot of the road that passes over the bridge, even before you had added the trees. She asked me why I was just staring at a road. She was amazed when I explained that it was actually part of a model railroad. "It looks so real!". I cannot think of a higher compliment. Well done, Sir!

    I have binge-watched a load of your videos over the last few weeks and loved them Richard. I am not a modeller and don't have the skill to start, but love looking at model railways and really admire your work. I have loved watching the 'new' layout grow over a few years (condensed into a few weeks for me). I think the terrace houses are Georgian (fan shaped fan-light, not the Victorian oblong style) which fits perfectly with the 'story' of the railway being built at some point after the houses, probably taking the land at the back that was their garden, and signalling the change in the houses from dwellings for families to flats. Really looking forward to further updates - thanks for your devotion to sharing the detail with the world.

    I love the fact that the fence isn't perfectly straight. There's bends, it's a bit twisted by the years it's been through, it's stained dirty from dust and dirt. Something like that can really set a scene to life.

    Absolutely amazing I look forward to your videos. And after that you know there's a 'but' coming... fence posts are never brown even when new. They are a pale greyish green new and become almost silver grey, and fade into the back ground. The footpath around the field goes into the corner, people never walk to a right angle, they cut the corner. I offer this to help, certainly not criticise, your work is truly excellent.

    • @EverardJunction
      @EverardJunction  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'll add that to my list of small jobs left for the scene. Cheers for the advice. There's a few walks local to me were people have cut the corner. Also some where the corners are walked but that might be due to crops or grass length.

    Absolutely stunning Richard! That has to be the most realistic scenic break ever modelled by anyone. By creating a bridge that you can see both sides of, rather than just the usual tunnel, it very convincingly gives the illusion there is no scenic break at all and trains out of view carry on for miles in a straight direction past the bridge. Fiddle yard, what fiddle yard?

    WHOA! Steady there Dick old chap... Ease back on the audio gain, if playing rock right from the start of the video... I jumped-out-of-my-skin and so did my hi-fi speakers! And I spilled my tea.... Not good to start a video with a CRASH, especially considering that someone like me, might have been watching another channel which had a lower audio gain level. Not eveyone watches TH-cam on a mobile phone, I watch TH-cam through a lounge entertainment system incorporated into my 37'' (TV) monitor and stereo hi-fi. Please bear that in mind, a little 'fade-in' at the start of audio would suffice. That said - music is good.
    .
    Now that my pulse has returned to normal... Excellent work on that scenic break, it was exactly how I envisaged it should look, especially the false embankment and all-important ballasting beyond the bridge. The foliage looks fantastic, as does that lovely muddy farm road. Track furniture looks very realistic, as per your research photos and that open field is very authentic.
    Superb work as always Richard.

    Well done again, as a railway S&T Tech for 30+ years now, as a youngster I remember digging in the orange pipes and then digging them back out lol, it’s lovely to see someone add just a nod to those little everyday details that were everywhere, think you got the right level of detail, as too much can over complicate the scene

  • @Ozbert
    @Ozbert 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When we started using the orange pipe to put the cables through, I suspect that some tamper drivers deliberately aimed for them and must have found it funny to get a direct hit with their prongs.
    Great capture of the atmosphere of the time. I probably wore a black Pea-jacket or great-coat with just a hi-vis' vest over it and jeans or trousers. None of this hard hat and "orange everything" back then. The old boy I worked with always wore a flat cap.

    Worth the wait! Cunning plan with the scenic break and fiddle yard embankment; and the rear embankment and road looks good, too. The field looks splendid. It would definitely suite some horses, I think - there were (and I think possibly still are) some fields with horses alongside the London Paddington to Slough section of the GWML.

    I dare say the gent in the orange jacket is looking to see where him and his mate can sit down to have a nice cup of tea and a slice of some home made fruit and nut loaf, after a busy mornings work. Hopefully they won't get to wet, as I expect they have to go out in all weathers. Are there going to be any dog walkers in the field near the railway? I think it looks very realistic, and I admire your eye for detail. Perhaps some of the people living in the multi occupancy housing by the railway, can join a local rambling group, and enjoy some pleasant walks in the countryside.

    Add an outdoor market with stalls that sell street food and gifts in the empty space intron of the houses, it would maybe involve paving the whole area but it would look good. Instead of paving it it could be a car park so that in winter when the market may not be out it can be used as a car park.

    Great stuff. Wire fences need strainer assemblies at each end and a heavier post at each change of direction within a run.otherwise the wire will pull the end posts out when they are tensioned.

    Your layout is really coming together.
    I'm intrigued to find out how you're going to get the branch line to convincingly disappear behind that back scene, although in this video it appears you seem to have simply just accepted that it would be simpler to leave it underground (which may be the best solution). I liked your previous idea of the horizontal supports over a brick cutting, although it felt like quite an urban construction so perhaps not the right location for it. No doubt the victorians would have stuck to a landscaped cutting in that rural location. I had an idea of a forced perspective cutting going to the horizon, painted onto a soft curtain that trains can pass through. The rail somehow going down a cutting into the distance and that being printed on some kind of cloth or paper strips which the train can push their way through as they break out of the back scene, to give the illusion that the track is going infinitely away (however this would break the illusion when the train broke through the cloth/paper door).
    The limitation with my suggestion is of course that it would look best straight on, as is the limitation with forced perspectives in general. But I suppose if the slopes either side were steep enough, the slopes would obscure the view sufficiently so that it could only be noticed straight on.
    I recall a system similar at Miniature Wunderland, the aircraft pass through the backscene via some kind of material they can push through th-cam.com/video/5tJn6MSwhFA/w-d-xo.html

    Love the look of this very much. I really enjoy seeing your progress here and can't wait to get stuck in on my own layout when I've got more space to make a start. Only suggestion I have is to give the walkers in that field somewhere to go. A set of steps up the embankment from the field to the muddy track with a stile in the fence at the top would look good. You often see these done like you did that step to the relay cabinet. A board with earth piled behind for each step.
