Fiddle Yard Improvements

  • As I said in the previous video I've decided to make some improvements to the fiddle yard. After quite a bit of thought I made the decision to extend the width of the boards to give me some more space. This allowed me to lay all of the track with smoother curves and streamline points.
So far everything has been running very well. Still some more work to do as always but I'm pleased I decided to take this step.

The train running montage was immense…the music, the details about the trains…it was really, really good!

Ok….. your running session absolutely inspired me.. the detail that you gave about the trains and the photography was world class and deserves to be in the most elite model magazines. Thank you and please add more like it. After all we are all in this hobby for our love of trains…. And we sometimes forget that we do all this hard technical work for the primary purpose of……. Running trains. Thank you for reminding me and for the really great experience.

What an absolute delight to see any of your vids, your attention to details that we know are there because we saw you create them, but at a brief glimpse you would never know were there are staggering. This is the era i worked for BR and you are just about perfect in all details. There are times when its hard to believe what we are watching are the modelling perfection you have attained and not the real thing. I particularly enjoyed the vids where you laid out the oh so familiar misplaced troughing with the odd lid out of place or broken lids and the one where you went to such lengths as placing all that junk that we all know collects in canals. Mind you as an ex-driver and professional audience, i think all your vids are great and i sometimes binge re-watch them all. Terriffic stuff.

Not only are you a great modeller, but your sense of theatre and showmanship conveyed in these videos is impressive. Your "silly little montage" was very enjoyable, all it needed was a commentary by Matt Berry! Love the step by step and clear explanations of your modelling, but also these snippets of theatre too. You should check out Mikkel's Farthing Layouts if you don't already know his blogs.

Amazing, what with sound and all, its hard to not believe you are not there casually leaning on a gate watching it all unfold before you, except, you must stick down and make good the joins in the clouds, its the only give away that its not full size and i worked in that BR environment for over 20 years, fantastic stuff. All we need now is EVERARD JUNCTION, THE MOVIE!!

HI Richard. I share your desire to have spacious, reliable storage. In fact, the Yarslow system started in the storage area - I thought it was that important! Interesting that you mention siding spacings having reduced with the move from Set Track to Streamline - I experienced the opposite. I got 16 double length tracks in using Streamline and would have come up way short had I used SetTrack. Another great vid - thanks.

If you were to extend the head shunts following the curves at each end. You could use them to accommodate the longer freight trains when in storage. Pulling forward in to one then backing up to clear the forward point again.

Fantastic video, as a Reading lad, it's an amazingly realistic model. (The sight of a Western rounding a curve, almost, nothing better)
I'm not a modeller but hopefully, constructive 'input', your smooth curves and track are perfect, but slightly jerky loco's in some shots are (I would respectfully suggest) your next/ongoing targets.

I know one thing, living in them block of flats would be handy if your into ye trains. judging by the excellent montage, I think its fair to say that Everard Station, would be a hot spot for Train Spotters. So it might be worthwhile thinking about having a few vegging on your platforms, when you do get to that station build. Thank you for sharing Richard.

  • @gs425
    @gs425 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Great well made video again Richard. But I will make a point here that we are constantly fed paranoia about endless dropper wires and bus lines. The reality is they are only needed where sections don't get power, rather than every single section of track. Home layouts just don't need endless feeds soldering in and I feel its putting off newcomers. So if your points into the fiddle line tracks are electrofrog then you naturally need insulating joiners. Therefore one pair of wires to each track. Many people insist on on pair to each track piece.
    Rant over hahaha

A fantastic running session on this video. A mate of mine has an n gauge NSE based layout. I,ve got him to follow your channel. Just an observation. In your HST rake the TRUB would have faced the other way. I.E. the saloon would have been facing the first class . The reason I know is I worked on them as a steward . This coach replaced the TRUK which did have the saloon seating facing towards the second class coaches. The TRUB was unclassified when they entered service but was set up like a first class coach with a 4 and 2 seating arrangement. It sat 17 as there was a single seat as you entered from the kitchen/buffet area. Some passengers bought a second class ticket and sat in there for a meal. They were not happy if we were busy and kicked them out to join the plebs I second class after they gad finished and we needed the seat for someone else. I hope you don't think it,s a criticism because it,s not meant to be

      @@EverardJunction
      Hi
I hope you don't think I was critersising. For ref the TRUB has 3 saloon windows, and was used on Inter City services only. The TRUK and TRSB had 4 saloon windows. Your HST is a W.R set, in this set It was the TRUK that had the saloon facing the second class and sat in the rake where your catering vehicle is situated, this then had a second class coach between it and the TRSB (or plain buffet car). They replaced the two catering cars with the TRUB a combined buffet restaurant and kitchen. The kitchen cars then got transferred to the Eastern Region when they started using HST,s in top flight service. I have seen pics of these sets with the two catering vehicles together and with one or two second class coaches between them I believe it was on the cross country HST,s the buffets had the saloons facing in either direction. But the buffet always sat between the first and second class. I didn't work cross country trains that often, I worked South Wales to Paddington services so I, not as clued up on these formations as the Inter City sets. If you are happy with the way the set looks leave it be. Please don't change it around because I have brought it up. Again I,m no rivet counter and just like to see good layouts running and I really enjoy watching your vids
      Thanks for posting
      Take care

I have to say, your montage was awesome. The use of each train and why was an eye opener and very informative. That got me thinking, is there any chance you could be persuaded to do more of them please. Maybe adding what each train could pull in the way of carriages and the reasons why it was used and why you used it ? I feel this would be a great help to us arm chair modellers and those of us that were not about in them days to build a better knowledge and more in depth railway. I have to say I had always just stuck a train to whatever I wanted and had never thought about the things you had said in your montage. Keep safe my friend and I hope to see more of this great content.
