Frankly, I cringe whenever the narrative of feminism is forcibly inserted into remuneration issues. If Katrina can bring in 300 crores for a film solely on her name like the Khans, Akki, Ajay, Ranbir, etc, then yes, she deserves to charge as much as any of them. For eg. Deepika was paid more than Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan for Piku. Vidya Balan was paid more than her co-stars in The Dirty Picture. So it's all about the perception.
Also if male and female leads have same amount of screen time then they should get paid equally. Female leads in most films hardly have 20-30 minutes of screen time still get expected to get paid as much as male leads.
Rana daggubatti's interview with scoopwhoop is one of the favorite one. As a representative of an industry he clearly breaks down all the misconception that people gossip about the world of movie stars and movie makers in simple terms. He clearly a man of immense passion towards cinema, his knowledge about the craft is really inspiring. He also clarifies the reality of nepotism in the industry. With harsh, intelligent, sugar coated witty replies he pulls the legs of interviewer and often shut her mouth about and force her to change the topic.
I don't see the point,she asked a genuine question. Rana daggubati has worked in different industries,host has asked a question about his experiences in respective industry. I don't see any sense in his answer

The best thing about dhanush interview is when asked by a fan at a press meet of the film he said that the channel people asked him to remove mike and walkoff so that they can promote the interview and attract audience attention. 😄😄

It was really impressive to hear Aamir khan talk about the pay gap from this point of view without mincing his words. It was humble but realistic at the same time. A person might not have given this answer when two actresses were sitting right beside them but I guess this side of the pay gap won't have been brought up that well without being completely honest.

It's a Profit driven industry and while it might feel 'emotionless' at times, it's the closest to Non-Discrimination as your Skin color, Gender, Ethnicity or Country of origin doesn't matter. If you can make money, you will be paid more. Simple as that.

While viewing this video, I really appreciated the diplomacy, intelligence and calm demeanour from our actors while answering these cringe-fest of questions. It is expected of them to behave as the adult in the room. It is much easier to clap back, rather than make it a teaching moment for everyone. Respect for that! I watched an interview of Sushant and Sara'for Kedarnath where the host (Komal Nahta) deliberately ignores Sushant and directs all the questions to Sara. He asks only one or two questions from him. It was worse at the trailer launch. All the journalists are asking questions from the director and Sara, for a whole 30 mins they only ask him if he is a Shiv bhakt, and what he thinks of Sara. That was really uncomfortable to watch
You do realize these videos are edited, to reflect content the creators think we, the audience, would like to watch, right? Back then, we were all in the throes of SaraMania, that is why the interviews were edited in that way. All these SSR warriors came to be after his death- how many comments did we hear, or read, when that happened, about how Sara was being given all the attention? Not many. But after he died? Almost every comment was about how he was sidelined because of a "Nepo-kid". No-WE are to blame, for our obsession with star kids, not just the media.

If Vidya Balan or Kangana or Taapsee are carrying a film entirely on their shoulders and raking in the moolah on the strength of their own name, they deserve all the pay raises they demand. I mean I understand Aamir Khan's point and it isn't the movie production companies to be blamed for the pay gap, but I do feel the reason that male actors do bring in so much more audiences and have a bigger fanbase than their female counterparts is because, the roles given to women are mostly for the eye candy and to fill in for the love interest, and they have much less staying power because after their 30s they're relegated to the side role of mom, and that men are still centered in a lot of movies. So I feel that while it wouldnt be fair to ask the industry to pay the one-song-two-scenes role actresses play the same as the centre-of-the-movie actor's role, we do need to work on bringing more relevant and complex roles for women in these movies. Like if you're going to bring in a female character, give her a proper role and significance to the plot. Yes there are female centered movies, but they are still a minority compared to the vast majority of movies being made.
Yes.... heroines are always portrayed as hero's male interests....I liked mardaani 2 more as compared to simbha, singham, dabang...I believe Rani mukherjee is the most badass cop as compared to all these other heroes ...still she isn't paid more because indian audience only want to see heroines doing item no. But not as the main lead....and hence it's our responsibility to choose quality content and do justice

I would like to object you regarding your stand in pay disparity. What amir khan said was absolutely true. Male actors can pull a larger audience than women. But how? Over the years the audience have been conditioned into seeing films solely owned by the male actors and females just been a supporting cast to the hero of the movie. No khan or kapoor had acquired the kind of stardom that they have now within the release of their first film. Even for aamir khan looking at his career his most successful movies came in the 90's (he had his hero debut in the 80's). The best stories are always written for the males and out of a 100movies releasing in a year only 10or 20 are movies about female characters. What i am trying here to convey is that. Underneath all the factors the main culprit is sexism and gender inequality! Our society have been worshipping the male actors because the kind of movies that they act in. When you look at the career graph of deepika padukone or kareena kapoor or kangana raunaut they have done only a few films led by their characters. It would take quite a long time for actors in general to achieve a large audience and to have that stardom or market pull. So we cannot just brush aside pay disparity saying that male actors or khans are able to pull a larger audience than fellow actresses. Its bcs of the existence of sexism in the movie industry for a long tjme.
Completely agree that its because of pre-existing sexism in the movie industry. Lets take example of Rajesh Khanna. He was a huge superstar in his era even though ,this might be controversial opinion , he was pretty average actor in terms of acting range . But he was hearthrob of indian women at that time. they made him famous just because of his looks and charm. Majority of his fans were female. And since he was registering hits on regular basis because of his humongous female fanbase, producers were opting for movies which will have him in lead role. This cycle was not created by actors it was created by us , the audience. Its fault of audience that they focus only on looks and charms rather than acting skills of actors. Same thing happened with all Khans, a problematic movie like DDLJ is still fav of many women and since no one questions it , men who already are priviliged and deep rooted in sexism and misogyny thinks that women like such men. My whole point was that its not only because of men but women too are equally responsible in making these male actors the superstars that they are today.

Exactly. If actresses are not being able to attract more crowds it is because they are not given the equal choice or reception. Audiences have been conditioned into liking these handful of 'SUPERSTARS' forever...It's not a one day thing, its a systematic process of establishing hierarchy over the market since years. Which is more than often done through money, politics, power, tons of fan clubs etc... These men were not born superstars. The ones who actually made their mark through sheer talent are valid and justified but we rarely see them earning as much as the Khans and other huge names, its the growth of OTT and a more conscious audience which has brought at least some value to them.. and the way in which Amir spoke reeked of the high handedness male celebrities have come to acquire, this god like position they've assumed which when questioned generates a money oriented answer conveniently sidelining the root causes and ethics of the industry. I really do admire Aamir and his work but the way he answered that was pretty rude.

I appreciate your content a lot, Jammy. But would like to point out a small nuance here. The point on pay parity has much more depth than what has been portrayed in this segment. We live in a patriarchal society which is by default inclined towards one gender. In such a scenario, asking valid questions about equality cannot be labelled as 'awkward' or 'unnecessary'. It's good that the actor has brought out a critical factor in response, but shouldn't these discussions happen in order to be informed about these things? I don't think we should be problematising the posing of such questions. Why is it such a big deal if questioning thousands of years of patriarchy makes you a bit uncomfortable? It is a symbol that we as a society have started asking pertinent questions. It need not be seen putting a privileged individual in a spot. Sure, your video is on awkward celebrity interviews, so you can't delve into the topic of sexism or pay parity too much, but a little more context would've been useful. Like 'this is one major factor but the issue of pay parity has several other aspects rooted in the patriarchal nature of the society...' Is it not true that the masses find it difficult to accommodate the idea of a female as a 'hero'? Why does the trope of an unrealistically strong character works better for male actors. Rajnikanth, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar have thrived on such action movies even if the story line wasn't much impressive. But the same plot doesn't work that well for women like the case of Mardaani and Gangajal 2. Clearly, people don't want to come to theatre to see the feminine heroine do insane action and beating the shit of people. There is definitely a lot of patriarchy underlying 'commercial success' in all fields including cinema, which if not acknowledged, leads to the notion that feminism is misguided. You would be doing a disservice if by way of your content, those sitting on the fence take home the idea that feminism is a vice that questions everything unnecessarily. There is, in fact, a need to question everything, deconstruct and rebuild the society on equal grounds. That cannot assure that everyone will be 'comfortable' at all times. Why should that attempt at that be so threatening?
I think blaming patriarchy for everything is illogical here... If people cannot accept a female in a lead role then why were movies like wonderwoman a success in india?..It all comes down to character buildup and portrayal..Of course the masses easily accept a male actor to be strong even without any character buildup..But that has nothing to do with patriarchy and all to do with biology... If there is a man and a woman and you are told one of them can lift 500 kgs which scenario do you think is easily believable??of course if I tell you that the woman has been powerlifting since 5 yrs then that's a different story...It's all about the portrayal of character that dictates the success of such stories... However the male lead roles don't need such things because basic biology teaches us that men have testosterone that helps them put on muscles that help in performing stunts...Of course there are so many movies and shows with female leads that have done well because it was more relying on plot rather than relying on lead to perform unrealistic stunts...

It is very different from a genre where a 'common man' delivers social justice with his hypermasculinity, fuelled by, as you pointed out, testosterone and a plausible biological logic. Patriarchy's denial to take any blame is itself a problem. Biology only marks the distinction between reproductive functions. It doesn't define abilities of an individual which are multidimensional and are not limited to how much weight one can lift.
@@shreshthasaluja I'm not saying that any man can beat up 20 men..But that's easier to believe that a man did it than believing that a woman did it when there is no background story or character buildup..And biology doesn't just mark distinction in reproductive capabilities but also in physical capabilities.. That is why we have men's and women's category in all the sports and games....If you want to see that difference just go to a nearby gym for a week.. Even a skinny guy will be able to lift more weights than you (assuming you are a girl not on any steroids) and will make progress at a faster rate.. So when there is an unrealistic action sequence people tend choose the one that looks closer to reality...I have seen so many action sequences with female leads garner success when they rely on martial arts flexibility etc..one example would be resident evil movie series.. However in indian movies the director usually likes to realy more on physical strength of lead more than actual use of martial arts to make the scene more realistic.. The same thing when used with female leads who don't even look big enough doesn't work out well.. However in Hollywood they try to make it more acceptable by either setting the story in a different world or showing us that she is a trained assasin etc.. They make such subtle adjustments.. However in bollywood they apply same formula for every action scene.. There is an actress called mala Sri who used to do a lot of action movies in Kannada film industry and were actually sucessful because she actually put on weight and looked like she could beat up goons... This is why I think lean and fit actresses in Bollywood do action sequences of beating 20 goons with brute strength doesn't work out and the same when done by salman works out because he at least looks like he could...

The world weightlifting record for men's is 225 kgs and the same for women's is 96kgs which is less than half.. If biology just marks distinction between reproductive capabilities and not ones capacity to lift weights then why is that women's weight lifting record is less than half of what men's record is?..
About the point made by Rana, I think that there are cultural differences in various film industries. Just because you dub a movie in a different language it doesn't change the fact that it was made for a particular audience. If you watch a Kannada movie in Hindi, there will be many nuances and inside jokes you fail to get. At the same time, the movie like Avengers (which can be dubbed into several languages) cannot be made in Hindi film industry in the same way. The movie making process, the scripts are definitely different.

The question asked to Priyanka Chopra was supposed to be like this - you talk about gender equality but when it comes to violence why it's not an even playing field. Why being a feminist you never raise any question regarding violence by women against men. Why do there exist taboos, fears of misunderstanding, and fears of not being believed or even ridiculed by authorities when victims are men. Why violence against men is treated differently than that committed against women in most societies and the so-called gender equalist never have any problem about it. The poor man couldn't frame the question properly in English & without trying to understand the question she deflected it to another direction. And stupid audience instead of correcting her started giggling and clapping making sure that she was not required to answer the actual burning question.

Most of the time ignorance and insensitivity seems when certain journalists pose questions as they do little to no home work, come with conceived notion and feel they have no limit. It was general question that if man slaps a woman (not regularly or something domestic violence) simply just slaps her in rage or by mistake it's an assault but if a woman slaps a man it's just a slap. Frankly, I cringe whenever the narrative of feminism is forcibly inserted into remuneration issues. If Katrina can bring in 300 crores for a film solely on her name like the Khans, Akki, Ajay, Ranbir, etc, then yes, she deserves to charge as much as any of them. For eg. Deepika was paid more than Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan for Piku. Vidya Balan was paid more than her co-stars in The Dirty Picture. So it's all about the perception.

I watched an interview of Sushant and Sara'for Kedarnath where the host (Komal Nahta) deliberately ignores Sushant and directs all the questions to Sara. He asks only one or two questions from him. It was worse at the trailer launch. All the journalists are asking questions from the director and Sara, for a whole 30 mins they only ask him if he is a Shiv bhakt, and what he thinks of Sara. That was really uncomfortable to watch
Same in chichore promotion in kapil sharma show too. It's extremely awkward show, it was my first and last time I watched for and for SSR.
You do realize these videos are edited, to reflect content the creators think we, the audience, would like to watch, right? Back then, we were all in the throes of SaraMania, that is why the interviews were edited in that way. All these SSR warriors came to be after his death- how many comments did we hear, or read, when that happened, about how Sara was being given all the attention? Not many. But after he died? Almost every comment was about how he was sidelined because of a "Nepo-kid". No-WE are to blame, for our obsession with star kids, not just the media.

I mean I understand Aamir Khan's point and it isn't the movie production companies to be blamed for the pay gap, but I do feel the reason that male actors do bring in so much more audiences and have a bigger fanbase than their female counterparts is because, the roles given to women are mostly for the eye candy and to fill in for the love interest, and they have much less staying power because after their 30s they're relegated to the side role of mom, and that men are still centered in a lot of movies. So I feel that while it wouldnt be fair to ask the industry to pay the one-song-two-scenes role actresses play the same as the centre-of-the-movie actor's role, we do need to work on bringing more relevant and complex roles for women in these movies. Like if you're going to bring in a female character, give her a proper role and significance to the plot. Yes there are female centered movies, but they are still a minority compared to the vast majority of movies being made.
Yes.... heroines are always portrayed as hero's male interests....I liked mardaani 2 more as compared to simbha, singham, dabang...I believe Rani mukherjee is the most badass cop as compared to all these other heroes ...still she isn't paid more because indian audience only want to see heroines doing item no. But not as the main lead....and hence it's our responsibility to choose quality content and do justice
And also, what Amir khan said may be true for lead actors and actresses. I agree they pull the crowd. But I see there is a clear pay gap between male and female character artists, and it is the real problem IMO.

I would like to object you regarding your stand in pay disparity. What amir khan said was absolutely true. Male actors can pull a larger audience than women. But how? Over the years the audience have been conditioned into seeing films solely owned by the male actors and females just been a supporting cast to the hero of the movie. No khan or kapoor had acquired the kind of stardom that they have now within the release of their first film. Even for aamir khan looking at his career his most successful movies came in the 90's (he had his hero debut in the 80's). The best stories are always written for the males and out of a 100movies releasing in a year only 10or 20 are movies about female characters. What i am trying here to convey is that. Underneath all the factors the main culprit is sexism and gender inequality! Our society have been worshipping the male actors because the kind of movies that they act in. When you look at the career graph of deepika padukone or kareena kapoor or kangana raunaut they have done only a few films led by their characters. It would take quite a long time for actors in general to achieve a large audience and to have that stardom or market pull. So we cannot just brush aside pay disparity saying that male actors or khans are able to pull a larger audience than fellow actresses. Its bcs of the existence of sexism in the movie industry for a long tjme.

Lets take example of Rajesh Khanna. He was a huge superstar in his era even though ,this might be controversial opinion , he was pretty average actor in terms of acting range . But he was hearthrob of indian women at that time. they made him famous just because of his looks and charm. Majority of his fans were female. And since he was registering hits on regular basis because of his humongous female fanbase, producers were opting for movies which will have him in lead role. This cycle was not created by actors it was created by us , the audience. Its fault of audience that they focus only on looks and charms rather than acting skills of actors. Same thing happened with all Khans, a problematic movie like DDLJ is still fav of many women and since no one questions it , men who already are priviliged and deep rooted in sexism and misogyny thinks that women like such men.
My whole point was that its not only because of men but women too are equally responsible in making these male actors the superstars that they are today.

Exactly. If actresses are not being able to attract more crowds it is because they are not given the equal choice or reception. Audiences have been conditioned into liking these handful of 'SUPERSTARS' forever...It's not a one day thing, its a systematic process of establishing hierarchy over the market since years. Which is more than often done through money, politics, power, tons of fan clubs etc... These men were not born superstars. The ones who actually made their mark through sheer talent are valid and justified but we rarely see them earning as much as the Khans and other huge names, its the growth of OTT and a more conscious audience which has brought at least some value to them.. and the way in which Amir spoke reeked of the high handedness male celebrities have come to acquire, this god like position they've assumed which when questioned generates a money oriented answer conveniently sidelining the root causes and ethics of the industry. I really do admire Aamir and his work but the way he answered that was pretty rude.

I appreciate your content a lot, Jammy. But would like to point out a small nuance here. The point on pay parity has much more depth than what has been portrayed in this segment. We live in a patriarchal society which is by default inclined towards one gender. In such a scenario, asking valid questions about equality cannot be labelled as 'awkward' or 'unnecessary'. It's good that the actor has brought out a critical factor in response, but shouldn't these discussions happen in order to be informed about these things? I don't think we should be problematising the posing of such questions. Why is it such a big deal if questioning thousands of years of patriarchy makes you a bit uncomfortable? It is a symbol that we as a society have started asking pertinent questions. It need not be seen putting a privileged individual in a spot.

Like 'this is one major factor but the issue of pay parity has several other aspects rooted in the patriarchal nature of the society...'
Is it not true that the masses find it difficult to accommodate the idea of a female as a 'hero'? Why does the trope of an unrealistically strong character works better for male actors. Rajnikanth, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar have thrived on such action movies even if the story line wasn't much impressive. But the same plot doesn't work that well for women like the case of Mardaani and Gangajal 2. Clearly, people don't want to come to theatre to see the feminine heroine do insane action and beating the shit of people. There is definitely a lot of patriarchy underlying 'commercial success' in all fields including cinema, which if not acknowledged, leads to the notion that feminism is misguided.
You would be doing a disservice if by way of your content, those sitting on the fence take home the idea that feminism is a vice that questions everything unnecessarily. There is, in fact, a need to question everything, deconstruct and rebuild the society on equal grounds. That cannot assure that everyone will be 'comfortable' at all times. Why should that attempt at that be so threatening?

If people cannot accept a female in a lead role then why were movies like wonderwoman a success in india?..It all comes down to character buildup and portrayal..Of course the masses easily accept a male actor to be strong even without any character buildup..But that has nothing to do with patriarchy and all to do with biology... If there is a man and a woman and you are told one of them can lift 500 kgs which scenario do you think is easily believable??of course if I tell you that the woman has been powerlifting since 5 yrs then that's a different story...It's all about the portrayal of character that dictates the success of such stories... However the male lead roles don't need such things because basic biology teaches us that men have testosterone that helps them put on muscles that help in performing stunts...Of course there are so many movies and shows with female leads that have done well because it was more relying on plot rather than relying on lead to perform unrealistic stunts...

Also, I must remind you of a huge difference between the audience for 'Wonder Woman' and Salman khan movies. Those who watch Wonder Woman are typically the fan base of DC characters, and not just that, it's a specific genre of fantasy superhero world.
It is very different from a genre where a 'common man' delivers social justice with his hypermasculinity, fuelled by, as you pointed out, testosterone and a plausible biological logic.
Patriarchy's denial to take any blame is itself a problem. Biology only marks the distinction between reproductive functions. It doesn't define abilities of an individual which are multidimensional and are not limited to how much weight one can lift.

That is why we have men's and women's category in all the sports and games....If you want to see that difference just go to a nearby gym for a week.. Even a skinny guy will be able to lift more weights than you (assuming you are a girl not on any steroids) and will make progress at a faster rate.. So when there is an unrealistic action sequence people tend choose the one that looks closer to reality...I have seen so many action sequences with female leads garner success when they rely on martial arts flexibility etc..one example would be resident evil movie series.. However in indian movies the director usually likes to realy more on physical strength of lead more than actual use of martial arts to make the scene more realistic.. The same thing when used with female leads who don't even look big enough doesn't work out well.. However in Hollywood they try to make it more acceptable by either setting the story in a different world or showing us that she is a trained assasin etc.. They make such subtle adjustments.. However in bollywood they apply same formula for every action scene.. There is an actress called mala Sri who used to do a lot of action movies in Kannada film industry and were actually sucessful because she actually put on weight and looked like she could beat up goons...
This is why I think lean and fit actresses in Bollywood do action sequences of beating 20 goons with brute strength doesn't work out and the same when done by salman works out because he at least looks like he could...

The world weightlifting record for men's is 225 kgs and the same for women's is 96kgs which is less than half.. About the point made by Rana, I think that there are cultural differences in various film industries. Just because you dub a movie in a different language it doesn't change the fact that it was made for a particular audience. If you watch a Kannada movie in Hindi, there will be many nuances and inside jokes you fail to get. At the same time, the movie like Avengers (which can be dubbed into several languages) cannot be made in Hindi film industry in the same way. The movie making process, the scripts are definitely different.

The question asked to Priyanka Chopra was supposed to be like this - you talk about gender equality but when it comes to violence why it's not an even playing field. Why being a feminist you never raise any question regarding violence by women against men. Why do there exist taboos, fears of misunderstanding, and fears of not being believed or even ridiculed by authorities when victims are men. Why violence against men is treated differently than that committed against women in most societies and the so-called gender equalist never have any problem about it.
The poor man couldn't frame the question properly in English & without trying to understand the question she deflected it to another direction. And stupid audience instead of correcting her started giggling and clapping making sure that she was not required to answer the actual burning question.

5:43 i actually quite didn't agree with Priyanka here. The man never said about eve teasing or anything. It was general question that if man slaps a woman (not regularly or something domestic violence) simply just slaps her in rage or by mistake it's an assault but if a woman slaps a man it's just a slap. And she made it into something like a boy Eve teasing and all making a scenario according to her. I actually expected a better reply to her. Coz i really liked the dialogue from her movie Aitraaz that agar ek aadmi aurat ko thappad maarti hai to hum kehte hai kitna zaalim hai aur agar ek aurat aadmi ko thappad maarti hai to hum kehte zaroor aadmi ne kuch Kiya hoga hum har Surat mein aadmi ko hi galat maante hai.
