Yes, I am the son of the late great Maury Mattingley. He was a great rider and fantastic engineer/ frame maker. I spent far more years racing MotoX than speedway (from 10 - 19yrs old), and then again for a short spell after deciding to stop racing full time speedway. I like to think I raced hard, but fair on both speedway and MotoX. Always gave racing room. Amazing times with the Falcons and wonderful support from all the Exeter supporters and staff at the County Ground. I think the incident in this particular clip hurt Gary O’Hare as much as it hurt me. His left foot got caught against my rear wheel and dragged up under the rear mudguard, acting like a brake and throwing me over the handlebars. I couldn’t feel anything in my left arm for a while, which is why I struggled to get up initially. No serious damage though. I won a MotoX race at the age of 12 or 13, but in a lot of pain after catching my foot in a big rut, two laps from the race finish. When the race had finished the St Johns staff said I had sprained my ankle and I should rest. I tried another race, but actually couldn’t take the pain after the first half a lap. Went to hospital - I had broken my ankle in two places 😮
In the sixties I was lucky to mix with the riders as my parents helped out at kings Lynn and I remember Cyril Crane coming in the pits with one of his front teeth broken because he had gone out without his face mask , home made from leather in those days , he went on to finish the meeting.
