40 years ago I arrived two hours early to a clinic of his and, ungrudgingly, Roy spent every second of it on a free drum lesson for me. Without exaggerating he was eerily like a drum wizard of Oz yanking aside the curtain and saying, "Take a look, I'll show you how all the machinery works behind the veil." The trad grip left hand fingertip technique that enabled Roy's blinding single stroke rolls was absolute sorcery. Then he gave a two-hour clinic answering everyone's questions. The crowd loved Roy so much they clustered around him another two hours asking still more questions. The euphoric Roy didn't mind one bit. A mob literally walked him to his car and made sure his seat belt was buckled. God bless that guy, he loved drums more than anyone I've ever met.

I attended one of his clinics back in the 70s. He explained and demonstrated how he practiced to gain speed for playing rudiments. Thank you for posting this. Roy was an educator and due to his influence, I'm a drum instructor and teach from books that Roy Burns authored.

Excellent! Join the Sabian Education Network teacher program at www.sabian.com/joinsen. you do not have to play Sabian, 5,000 teachers involved!

Great memories of seeing him on Long Island doing clinics in the 70s. I learned a lot. What a great guy he was. A real gentleman.

Roy was a master drummer! I was fortunate enough to attend some of his Rogers clinics in the 1970s, and to meet him at NAMM shows. Always a direct, but firm conversation, and always helpful. He was one of a handful of drummers in my core group of "idols", I read his books, etc.. So much great information, presented in the clearest way. :)

It's so funny! I used to hear this ALL DAY LONG...for decades! I probably told you this somewhere else already, Dom. I live across the street from Roy. He was always out in the garage practicing...it was Heaven for me. I loved it so much. I think everyone did. I'm not aware of any neighbors ever complaining...and it was LOUD! Our street is like an amphitheater...sound traveled beautifully. :)

I attended one of Roy's clinics when he was with Rogers drums and he was a true professional and an excellent teacher. He had excellent technique and plenty of chops when he needed them or when he wanted to use them. He was never one of those "here I am and see my chops" type of drummers.

Aquarian snare drum batter heads are the best, regardless of drumming style, in my opinion.
