One thing that not many people notice here is that in Big Brother when a contestant gets evicted, Davina always signs off the announcement with “I’m coming to get you”. The Doctor says this here to Rose. It’s a nice little subtle top-and-tail of Big Brother to the episode.
I like it when these shows look at the consequences of their usual 'fly in, fix the problem, fly away and leave them to figure out how to recover by themselves'. Lower Decks does that too, there are a few episodes that call out Picard for just thinking the problem was solved at the end of the episode.
You're climbing on my list of favorite reactors, especially with how you've gotten emotionally involved with them, in both this series and Farscape. I'm having the time of my life right now.
Yes, the 3 shows at the start we're very popular in 2005 and they actually used the voices of the shows presenters for them (anne Robinson played the anne droid, trinny and susanna were the 2 clothes robots and davina mcall was the big brother voice.... )
Great episode. Eccleston really hit it out of the park with this one - and that defiant closing-speech to the Daleks gives me chills after all these years.
The 4th Doctor (Tom Baker) was my first doctor, and first favorite. Yes, I'm old. LOL When thinking that Jack looked good in a t-shirt and jeans, I wanted to say, "hold on to your knickers, there's more coming".
Ditto, Tom Baker. But only really for Keeper of Traken, Logopolis and I'm pretty sure remember being terrified of bits of Full Circle (I mean I was 3-4 years old). Peter Davidson is truly my Doctor though.
As a British person it was *so weird* to see Doctor Who recreate Big Brother, The Weakest Link, and What Not To Wear! And with the hosts of those shows voicing robotic versions of themselves, no less! Incidentally, there was a 2006 charity special episode of The Weakest Link with a Doctor Who theme featuring loads of actors from Series 2 of Doctor Who as the contestants, including David Tennant! I think it can be found for free here on TH-cam, and it's worth a watch if you have some free time after finishing Series 2!
Oh neat to find about about! I knew that the Anne droid was voiced by her; didn't know about the others, probably since I didn't know who hosted those shows (and some of them I've never seen). 👍 Note to @funnylilgalreacts - you should *definitely* check out that 2006 special episode of The Weakest Link that is mentioned here! 👍
Your reaction to the end of the Daleks just all chanting "Exterminate!" is exactly what 6 year old me thought when seeing this lol. Good TV can still give that goodbump effect and it's absolutely glorious when it happens.
Same. Saw Star Wars in 1977 when I was 10 then saw Doctor WHo for the 1st time. It was the 3rd Doctor confronting Daleks and I naively thought they were R2D2 ripoffs.
That's something I've grown to really appreciate about dr who, since the daleks represent human Hate, particularly the N*zis, which keep cropping up and need constant vigilance against them.
Bad Wolf was a mysterious phrase specific to this series of DW. Its meaning is explained in the finale. The Daleks being behind everything was a complete surprise. Everyone thought (along with the Doctor) that the one in Dalek really was the last. Whoever said Jack simply makes an appearance in Torchwood was misleading. Or possibly avoiding spoilers, but you should be safe from those after finishing series 1. He is one of the main characters. If you do watch it, wait until you've finished Series 2 of DW for continuity.
I have been *hanging out* for your reaction to this ep and I already can't wait for next week. Also, pleasingly, I've just worked out that I get your reaction to the first Xmas special for my birthday!! Happy birthday, birthday month twin. Also, seeing your comments of transitioning TARDISes. The exterior remains largely the same, but every Doctor gets their own interior, which has become something of a running gag in the series. Semi-regularly "The Doctor" (I've used quotes because it's been said by more than one) will enter another Doctor's TARDIS, and similar to the companion's "it's bigger on the inside", will bust out "Ahh, I see you've redecorated. I don't like it". But I'm just here for the ride. Let's get into it.
Over the many decades the doctor has traveled to the future many times and the future keeps changing because every time he changes history there are new futures are created.
2:00 -- These are feelings through which every dr. who fan has to go through. The next doctor will still be your new favorite doctor. They all cheat their way into your heart at some point. ;)
On Big Brother, when someone got evicted, Davina would say "I'm coming to get you!" The "Then we're going to get you" is a play on that, plus the Doctor telling Rose "I'm coming to get you". For someone who knows all these shows, this episode is great. So much fun. Until it's not!
The moment where the Doctor says "No" holds a special place in my heart. Watching it with my dad, when that hit he leaned forward in his chair and put his fingers to his chin, so intent on the scene. Just a magical moment.
The TARDIS "console room" (as it was known in the classic era, though I don't think it's really ever been called that in the new era, mostly because there's been barely any episodes when they've gone BEYOND the console room) underwent about 4 major shake ups in 26 years from 1963-89. In 1996 when they tried to make WHO into an American/British co-production, thankfully THANKFULLY the Brits stood there ground when it came to how the outside of the TARDIS looked, and also the sound of the TARDIS de/rematerialising. The inside underwent a total redevelopment however, and was amazing! It felt much more like a home, which was the intention right from the very beginning. When the show finally came back in 2005, well, you've seen the "coral theme". I'm glad you like it, but I'd love to see more of it. Thankfully we do have a few stories coming up that venture deeper inside the TARDIS...
33:37 I'm not going to go into details because spoilers, but John Barrowman is one of the _co-stars_ of Torchwood. He's in every episode. That's not to say that Torchwood is "The Captain Jack Harkness Show", but he is a central character in it. So, it's a bit more than "he makes an appearance in it". 🙂
Have the large box of tissues ready for the end, that goes for all of us watching too! Your pinky up pronunciation of Dalek is spot on and who doesn’t love Jack 😉👍 Re: Big Brother. They got Davina McCall from Channel 4 (who showed Big Brother UK) to do the Big Brother voiceover and Anne Robinson from The Weakest Link to do the AnnDroid voice!
In an age of streaming, your reactions really make me feel the pain of cliffhangers...sure you just have to change your shirt, but I have to wait until next week!
this is part 2 of why the Dalek episode was so good. It established how tough and near unbeatable one Dalek was. So finding out half a million are around earth... brown trousers time.
The funniest thing about the Doctor's relationship with the timelords is that he doesn't even like them all that much. Back in classic Who he said this about him when they put him on trial: In all my travellings throughout the universe, I have battled against evil, against power-mad conspirators. I should have stayed HERE! The oldest civilization: decadent, degenerate and rotten to the core! Ha! Power-mad conspirators, Daleks, Sontarans, Cybermen - they're still in the nursery compared to us! Ten million years of absolute power - that's what it takes to be really corrupt!
THAT moment gets everyone the first time. It’s amazing - rationally, we know she can’t be dead forever - but every one of us believes it in that moment.
I started watching Doctor Who in about 1980 at the age of 3. (In reality - I am sure my brothers had me sitting next to them watching the show as soon as I could sit up - I don't remember a time that I didn't watch Doctor Who.) I've seen every episode of Doctor Who (that is possible to watch; 96 instalments from 1963-69 were destroyed, and only exist as audio recordings). In 2005 when RTD brought Doctor Who back from oblivion, I was dubious. We'd gone through an attempted revival in 1996 and that was heartbreaking when it failed. But sitting there watching the television in 2005 - watching THIS episode... I felt every bit of the emotions that you were going thru watching this now. It is an AMAZING story, and the story-arc was brilliant. Now - I said all of that to say this... When you spoke of how the Doctor wiped out the Time Lords in order to kill the Daleks... (and as it turns out - he did it all for nothing...) It is devastating... One of the things that (generally) always happened in Doctor Who was that the Doctor did not go for a gun... He did not just shoot his way out of a situation... But one of the very few times that the Doctor ever did hold a gun in the Classic Era was in a Dalek story. Ultimately, he couldn't pull the trigger. Seeing the Doctor in this story, knowing what he has done... Ok now I'm just rambling, and trying not to give away anything, and - you know, Doctor Who is just this cute lil kids show. :) THIS episode (and its conclusion) is very much why by 2010 Doctor Who was the BBC's biggest money earner.
As others have said, Jack is definitely more than just an appearance in Torchwood - if you like Jack then definitely give it a watch. It has some incredibly strong episodes (and a few, definitely the minority, weaker episodes) - I found it to be one of those where the highs are incredible, and the lows can be quite low, but overall 100% a worthwhile watch, especially after they find their feet with the writing and the characters grow.
I've seen a lot of reactors immediately brush off Rose's supposed death because "they wouldn't kill off a main character" so it was nice to see someone take the possibility seriously for once!
1. I also love Big Brother and Dan Gheesling is king! If you're not watching this season, you should, it's really great. Lots of drama that is fun rather than toxic. 2. I don't know if you've watched The Leftovers, but Christopher Eccleston is in it and his arc is amazing! It's a very sad emotionally taxing show, though. The actor who is playing "The Weakest Link" with Rose is also in The Leftovers. Love your reactions! They're so in-depth and super fun to watch as I rewatch the show.
Everything worked so well in this episode. The suspense was incredible, thinking Rose might actually be dead. When the Daleks are being revealed, the music just hits perfectly! Can't wait for the next episode to answer..... some... some of your questions!

24:30 that throbbing noise is the Dalek heartbeat. We didn’t hear it in the first Dalek episode but it’s an iconic sound for the fans who saw the classic show. So as soon as they heard that noise they’d know straight away it was the Daleks before the audience even see them

Lower Decks does that too, there are a few episodes that call out Picard for just thinking the problem was solved at the end of the episode.
I think my fav was the Lower Deck's "Trusted Sources" episode that shows what happened to the Ornarans and Brekkians from TNG's Symbiosis
You're climbing on my list of favorite reactors, especially with how you've gotten emotionally involved with them, in both this series and Farscape. I'm having the time of my life right now.
Yes, the 3 shows at the start we're very popular in 2005 and they actually used the voices of the shows presenters for them (anne Robinson played the anne droid, trinny and susanna were the 2 clothes robots and davina mcall was the big brother voice.... )
The Weakest Link and Big Brother are both still around, although both have changed a lot since then.
😂😂
"There's less coming." 😉
@@piperbird7193 seems like more coming would be accurate too 🤔
Tom Baker was my first Doctor, he was GREAT!.......Jelly Baby?
Note to @funnylilgalreacts - you should *definitely* check out that 2006 special episode of The Weakest Link that is mentioned here! 👍
You'll love Torchwood. Jack is the star and in every episode of every series. It's a fabulous show.
17:00 "I don't know if you can keep that promise" methinks (if you weren't already) you've become a whovian
Rule N⁰1.... Oh, wrong season/series😅
Your reaction to the end of the Daleks just all chanting "Exterminate!" is exactly what 6 year old me thought when seeing this lol. Good TV can still give that goodbump effect and it's absolutely glorious when it happens.
The Anne-Droid is actually voiced by Anne Robinson. Always thought that was awesome! Also, you should look a little more into Torchwood, Angela. 😏
All in good time, all in good time. Let her get the back-story via DW season 2, first.
I start watching Dr who in 1977 at 7 years old. When the show came back with this season I felt like a kid again
Same. Saw Star Wars in 1977 when I was 10 then saw Doctor WHo for the 1st time. It was the 3rd Doctor confronting Daleks and I naively thought they were R2D2 ripoffs.
24:28 that unmistakeable "heartbeat" sound instantly told every classic Who fan that Rose was on board a Dalek ship.
1:20 - Well, what can I say... Welcome to the fandom! Now you're doomed to experience it over, and over and over again.
You LOVE DR WHO..... ITS a pleasure to watch your reactions... Bless You
The Daleks are like bed bugs, there's always more of them.
That's something I've grown to really appreciate about dr who, since the daleks represent human Hate, particularly the N*zis, which keep cropping up and need constant vigilance against them.
More like cockroaches!
The most "genocided" species in Doctor Who!
Nice comparison, and everyone hate those things. Thinking about them like that made me itch.
"I'm coming to get you" is the perfect Big Brother callback.
New funnylilgal DW reaction? I have been summoned
Your channel makes my heart bigger on the inside😊
Over the many decades the doctor has traveled to the future many times and the future keeps changing because every time he changes history there are new futures are created.
"teacher?
2:00 -- These are feelings through which every dr. who fan has to go through. The next doctor will still be your new favorite doctor. They all cheat their way into your heart at some point. ;)
I have my laundry room door painted up as the TARDIS.
Is the inside big enough to make your socks vanish?
On Big Brother, when someone got evicted, Davina would say "I'm coming to get you!"
The "Then we're going to get you" is a play on that, plus the Doctor telling Rose "I'm coming to get you". For someone who knows all these shows, this episode is great. So much fun. Until it's not!
Your first Doctor is a very big deal! We understand
Wow, you are surprisingly knowledgeable about 2000's British game shows. Everytime I show people series 1, I have to explain each game to them 😂
Funnylilgalreacts - Making New Who even better! :)
Also yes, I'm a Brit and that is how Big Brother and Weakest Link looked at the time here
Except much more space to some degree.
I think every episode of season 4 is gonna require an entire box of tissues 😂❤
The moment where the Doctor says "No" holds a special place in my heart. Watching it with my dad, when that hit he leaned forward in his chair and put his fingers to his chin, so intent on the scene. Just a magical moment.
It's a testament to the strength of 1x6 that you've got so much genuine fear on your face seeing so many Daleks in the final moments of this episode
Two hearts.
One for every day and one for Sunday best.
Start off with some light hearted reality show shenaningans, end with devastation. I love this show...
To be fair, being killed because you lose the game doesn't seem that light hearted
To be fair, that wasn't the start of the episode, that came after.
“My masters, they fear the Doctor.” Such a good moment.
So who's laying the eggs?
The funniest thing about the Doctor's relationship with the timelords is that he doesn't even like them all that much. Back in classic Who he said this about him when they put him on trial:
In all my travellings throughout the universe, I have battled against evil, against power-mad conspirators.
Was not expecting to see the return of the clicky head thingy but it was a welcome return 😂
Even if they had that dalek's memory these daleks would think that one was an abomination
Guessing you are going to watch the next episode right away. Probably a good idea!
The funny thing about Doctor Who is that it is always changing, yet its core remains the same.
I love your reactions, and I love your editor! You're both matched SO well! 💜
I started watching Doctor Who when I was three years old. That was in 1965. So I’ve been a Whovian for nearly 58 years!
I am so happy to see how much you are involved with the characters. It's so adorable. Can't wait for part 2
7:14 Big Brother Bad Wolf Big Bad Wolf Big Brother Big Bad Brother Wolf Big.
They're so in-depth and super fun to watch as I rewatch the show.
absoultely love the passion you have for some of the shows
He is the star of Torchwood, in every episode
Your first Doctor, is always your fondest.
Oh sweet, naïve Angela! Eccleston was also my first doctor, so I have empathy. But enjoy it's a fun ride!
Everything worked so well in this episode. The suspense was incredible, thinking Rose might actually be dead. When the Daleks are being revealed, the music just hits perfectly! Can't wait for the next episode to answer..... some... some of your questions!
Torchwood is a jack harkness show. But for the timeline Torchwood series 1 ends a few episodes before the end of Who series 3. Editor would probably know.
Edit. Spelling/auto correct correcting.
Yep the whole torchwood thing with captain jack haven't happened in dr who.... yet so unless you want lots of story spoilers it's going to have to wait.... for now
24:30 that throbbing noise is the Dalek heartbeat. We didn’t hear it in the first Dalek episode but it’s an iconic sound for the fans who saw the classic show. So as soon as they heard that noise they’d know straight away it was the Daleks before the audience even see them
I cantttt her brain opening when she is snapping is the funniest thing 😂
The genius of having one Dalek in the episode "Dalek" is that we get to see how deadly and destructive just one of them is. Then we reach this episode. Imagine how much damage 500,000 of them can do.
Everyone's first doctor is special.
Love how attached you are to eccleston him and Tennant are my doctors and Rose is forever my companion.
It always warms my heart to see how loved he is
Your reactions and emotional charge is so power. I love them so much
One of THE BEST Dalek reveals of all time. That panning shot from the one Dalek ship to a whole Fleet of them, after seeing what just ONE Dalek could do combined with the music fills you with such dread.
And then the Doctor's 'no' speech and the swelling music turning you from impending dread to blood-pumping hope... god, this episode is so good!
And the next one is even better!
As always, fantastic reaction Angela... this is just the start!!! Can't wait to watch your journey
So when I first saw this episode, I was so excited at 24:30, because as a long time fan of the Classic Series, I recognised that sound effect immediately, and knew what it meant.
transmats are an old standard of classic who. basically a short range (moon/space station to planet) teleport between two established points. very reliable, fly style accidents are remarkably rare.
The 4th Doctor (Tom Baker) was my introduction to Doctor Who, but Eccleston has a special place in my heart for the new era of the Doctor's stories.
You must do Torchwood
Season 1 of dr who will always be my favorite, Eccleston will always be my fav, but the Tennet years are magnificent and you're in for some spectacular stuff!
I love Eccleston. Shallow Grave is one of my favorite movies, and he was the reason I became interested in the show in the first place, and I love his take on the character. So when I tell you that Tennant is my favorite Doctor, know how high the bar was already set 🙂
Shallow grave is an underrated masterpiece, Obi-wan Kenobi meets The Doctor, Hijinks ensue.
Two questions you can never ask, where did Jack hide his Lazer and why Christopher Eccleston left?
😂
What about the ONE question that must never be answered?
My answer to both is arseholes.
Fun fact - John Barrowman who plays Jack was gutted that they cut his ass from this episode. They filmed it, but of course the BBC being the BBC didn't think teatime viewers were ready for Jack's ass!
EDIT: And yes, Jack is in Torchwood. As far as I know he has a fairly consistent role in it!
I... seem to remember seeing it. Could it have been in the original airing then cut after? Or just on the dvd?
@@crowfoot1199 I've not seen the DVD version so maybe it got added back in? I know they tweaked a few episodes for DVD release.
It was definitely not in the original airing as we switched over to Doctor Who Confidential straight after watching where John talked about the cut!
@@mccpcorn2000 huh. I no longer have my dvds, alas (unwillingly), so I can't confirm. Keeping it in the dvd does makes sense.
yea I am SEATED and READY for your next reaction
Doctor Who and Torchwood is akin to the relationship between TNG and DS9.
There shall come a point in Who when it effectively sign posts the beginning of Torchwood, and you should definitely watch it!
This episode, along with Dead Set, are 2 of the best reimaginings of Big Brother.
I haven't watched these episodes in years, so I absolutely appreciate watching with you! It reminded me how fantastic the writing really was back then. Fun fact: I met John Barrowman and David Tennant, and they're both awesome.
